It's a BUSINESS decision.  You look at the machine that has the highest installed base, and you make your top-tier games for it.  Simple.  They don't "despise" the GameCube, we just don't have a high enough installed base to entice them.

Well Rick your right in one regard, PS2 has the largest userbase but as Perfect Cell said...money has a lot to do with it.  MS literally pays people to put games on their console. If the largest userbase was the main factor, why has Sega heavily supported X-box despite poor sales. Why did Dead to Rights, Splinter Cell, etc. hit X-box first when its userbase doens't come close to PS2. Yes userbase is a factor but so is money. Before FF7's release, the Saturn was killing the PS1 in Japan, Sony had money though so it hit PS1, the PS1 surpassed the Saturn and it ensured the Dragon Quest would also be on PS1. So userbase is a factor but so is money. Perception is more important than reality in the videogame industry. From Sega's mythical "blast processing" contrived to make it appear that the Genesis and its faster CPU made it more powerful than the SNES, to Sony shunning 2D development on PS because it was "dated".....when it reality it was because the lack of the PS's 2D prowess, perception often becomes reality in gaming. We all remember how Capcom suspended all PS1 development for a short while because Sony told them to stop making 2D titles because they looked better on Saturn. So userbase is a factor, but the biggest factors are money, perception, and politics. The perception is that Nintendo is dead in the water, the reality is that they are making the most money of any of the big three. Nintendo's Gamecube is perceived to be an inferior, kiddie, underpowered console. Konami put a version of Silent Hill on GBA, yet the Gamecube is "too kiddie" to receive a version of Silent Hill. The average age of a Gamecube owner is higher than the average owner of the GBA. So the GBA would be more "kiddie" than the Gamecube but the GBA has the larger user base. That and the fact that Nintendo isn't will to throw huge gobs cash at Konami like MS did for MGS2: Substance is the reason why Konami is not putting marque titles on Gamecube. Yes the GC has substantially lower userbase that the PS2 but its actually ahead of the X-box worldwide and is killing the X-box in japan. MGS2 sold 750,000 copies on PS2 in Japan. If every Japanese gamer bought MGS2: Substance twice it couldn't sell that many on X-box in Japan. Yes MGS2 has the potention to sell more copies in the US on X-box but if you look at worldwide sales, it would sell better on GCN. So userbase and money hats determine which games go where. From a business sense PS2 is expected to receive the most focus from third parties.....that doesn't explain the GC and X-box situation, but money hats do.

Well Non Jagged I couldn't agree more. Rogue Leader uses bump mapping. Who ever said the GC can't do bump mapping needs to check their facts. With Metroid Prime 2 in the works, I'm interested to see what kind of advancements can be made to the engine used in MP.

As for a the graphics processor goes Nintendo should stick with ATI. ATI has gotten more impressive on the PC front of things and with ArtX's best minds working with ATI's on the next GC graphics processor things can only turn out stellar. As far as the CPU goes, since Sony has allied with IBM, I think Nintendo should look into Motorola. Motorola and IBM has partnered for the PowerPC standard for Mac's and when it comes to floating point calculations Motorola built Power PCs with there AltiVec technology actually outperform IBM built PowerPC's. Plus keeping a PowerPC based CPU along with an ATI based GPU will allow for the possibility of the next GC being backwards compatible.

Well to be honest the reason you don't see more GC games with bumpmapping and hi-res textures is because most GC games are ports. Nintendo isn't really known for pushing hardware to its limits and outside of Capcom we've seen little exclusive 3rd party games for GC. So thats why we haven't seen anything that pushes the hardware. I can still fire up Rogue Leader and it looks damn good. Not much has come close to it and it was a launch title. Outside of Metroid, I've yet to see a fully 3D game besides Rogue Leader that pushes the GC's hardware. Graphics aren't everything but it is shame to have hardware that capable of so much more that we aren't seeing. Well RE4 looks impressive but we wont see that for another year. Hopefully Nintendo or a 3rd party will have something at e3 that will blow my socks off.

Nintendo Gaming / Dengeki Charts
« on: February 20, 2003, 05:15:31 AM »
Yeah I've heard about the great start the SP, Tactics, and Fusion had. So I'm glad to see some hard numbers. I'm always amazed by the differences between the Dengeki and Media Crate charts. Anyone know why there are differences. I mean game sales on the Media Create charts are always substantially higher....do they count the number of units shipped? And does Dengeki count the actual units sold through?

Nintendo Gaming / How are you supposed to rate a port of an old game?
« on: February 18, 2003, 10:35:51 PM »
Capcom should have bundled RE2 and 3 together and sold them for $40 or even $50 with both of them in the same package either price would have been a deal. Selling them for $40 a piece isnt wise. I understand that Nintendo had something to do with it, but that would have been the sensible way around it. Also OoTshouldn't be held to the same standard as RE2 and 3....as Icons by Size just stated, it was free with the new Zelda....you didn't have to pay $40 for it.

Nintendo Gaming / How would they make Skies of Arcadia 2? (Spoilers Likely)
« on: February 18, 2003, 10:30:40 PM »
Fair warning this post may contain minor spoilers....read at your own risk.

Yeah I'd love to see a sequel too. I know the game is selling pretty well in the states partially due to the lack of RPGs, that plus factoring in the quality of the games, and the fact that like with PS0...Sega didn't ship enough copies. No wonder their earnings blow they don't seem to be able to anticipate the sales of their games very well. Anyway. Good point despite all of the floating continents, Arcadia has a whole "world" under the clouds.  That and even after you discover all of the continents and islands of the world there is plenty of room for someone or some catastrophe to cause "continents" to rise from the deep sky or as stated earlier there could be a whole civilization under clouds of the deep sky also. Maybe this civilization could have something to do with the mythical seven moon. There was a mention of a black moon that used to orbit Arcadia.....maybe it sank beneath the clouds of the deep sky or maybe its there but because of its color it hasn't been seen. Well those are just some ideas I have. So they could have a lost civilization of the Black Moon with a black gigas or maybe there are some more Silivites that are around that didn't approve of the use of the Rains of Destruction and split of from the main group of Silivites in disgust. There is a lot of room for a well made sequel, lets just hope it sells like Sonic Adventure 2 Battle did. Then we will surely get a follow up to SOAL. Oh and I apologize for the long post.
