Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 201: Refractory Period

Bboy, I am looking at your copy of King of Clubs right now.  I dug it out of the concrete bunker this afternoon and have begun to disinfect the game.  You should probably go ahead and move now, because I'll be mailing it tomorrow and your home will never be safe again once it arrives.

I think my Wii is worried that it's in the same room as this game yet again.  I know I am.
I'm more concerned for the poor mail workers.

Do people want me to post the story? It probably ruins all chances of a reenactment then.

Thanks guys! I guess I didn't need that whole self-conscious preamble to the story I submitted. I'm glad you guys liked it. Personally, I think it would be awesome if you did a podcast dramatization of it.

I'm considering what I'm going to do with King of Clubs. I hadn't really thought about it. Do I dare put it on display with my other games, and risk it infecting them? Also James, PM me about sending it, if you're just gonna put it in the mail or whatever.

If Jonny's out this week, then maybe the episodes go 103, 202, 301? At least then it's palindromic. Karl's probably right though, spontaneity is what made it funny.

The most interesting I find in this is that interview he seemed to be hinting at a Revolutionary War MGS.

Also, I guess this kind of partially confirms the rumor going around that the 3DS is almost as powerful as the HD consoles.

I think I disagree with you guys. I never had an NES and have only played both games recently, so no nostalgia involved, and to me Kid Icarus seems more playable than the original Metroid. Without a map I find Metroid unplayable, although I do have a terrible sense of direction. At least with Kid Icarus I know where I'm going, even if I can't get past level 2.

Paladin's Quest sounds cool though, the original game sounds like it would be really hard, but reusing the same idea could be a cool idea in a new game.

Not sure if it's a bug of just a mix up but the staff pages with stuff like favorite developers and movies and stuff like that is mixed up.

Good show, even though I've only played one of the games. When Jonny said what the theme was, I said to myself, well the only thing I could get would be FFIII, and then in the first two seconds of the first song, there it was. Johnny, if you're curious about FFIII, I would wholeheartedly recommend it. The ending is ridiculously hard, with a crazy boss rush, but I managed to do it, and this was my first Final Fantasy game. The FFIV remake was a little bit better in almost every way, but the core of FFIII is still very good. And there's a sort of predecessor to the thing you like so much about FFIV where characters come and go. Your core party of four people stays the same, but NPC helper characters come and go throughout the story. So overall, I liked it, even as a newcomer. Though, if you do pick it up, my advice would be to switch jobs depending on the dungeon you're in, the game doesn't really make this very clear early on, and if you don't switch often you kind of have to brute force your way through each dungeon.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Cave Story WiiWare

I think I'm screwed.  Is it possible to get back to to the farm after you've saved in the upper portion (after rocketing past the instant death traps)?  As far as I can tell, it's not, which means I can't go back to get the more powerful weapon.  :(

I beat the doctor's second form but I have so little health I can barely scratch the final (?) boss.

Out of curiosity, how much HP should I have at this point?  Mine's 45.
I just beat it with 45 health. I don't really have any pointers, for me it just took practice until I had all of the bosses patterns down, including the last one. Eventually I just got to the final boss with 39/45 health, and it worked.
Also, if you go into the extra modes for WiiWare you can test out all of the possible weapons, and I have to say, as much as I love the Machine Gun's recoil, the Spur is the perfect weapon for me. My one problem in the game is that I feel the need to always have fully powered up weapons, and if one of my weapons is on the 2nd level, I'm just not going to use it until I can fill it up. The problem with this is that I feel the need to grind for those little triangles or for health, which can be frustrating. The spur on the other hand, totally eliminates that problem, with the charge. So, I can't wait to replay it to get the spur, which is saying something seeing as I just beat it.

The boss rush as what I assume to be the end of the game can piss off.

Anyone have any tips on how to get through it?

I can beat Misery without too many problems, but she uses up the majority of my missiles if I want to beat her without losing too much health.  Then I use a combination of the machine gun and King's sword on the doctor's first form.  By the time the third one rolls around I'm drained of both energy and weapons and he murders me pretty quickly.
For Misery I would recommend saving your missiles, you can avoid taking almost any damage by getting directly under her with the machine gun, but when you see her charge up to summon a block or some dark magic, move quickly to the side. Also, if you lose some health use her bats to build back up.

I can beat Misery almost without being hit at this point, but I still can't manage to beat the final boss. I've been able to fight off Sue and Misery, but at that point, between those two and the two doctor forms, I'm too weak to actually fight the core. Any tips?

Looks interesting.  Hmm, maybe I should beat Super Mario Galaxy....

.....naaaaaah.
I never finished the first one either. But Mario + Goron's Mask...? Could be awesome. Oh right, that's the other awesome game I never finished. -.-; Sorry SMG2, no dice, gotta go finish those first.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Announces Nintendo 3DS

I remember something from CES where someone was showing off tech for a 3D TV without glasses, but the problem with it was that you had to sit within a specific area to see the 3D, which, of course, wouldn't be a problem with the DS, because everyone would be holding it in nearly the same place. If it's not too expensive, then thumbs up to Nintendo. For some reason I think 3D used on a handheld would be used more creatively (and less just to show off) than on a console. On a console I think 3D would just become more of a pissing contest for graphics, whereas a handheld is more limited, so it's not just going to be about the graphics. Just an idea, anyway.

All three Gamestops in my area tried to gave me this crap, but I happened to be going to trade in some games anyway, and just took a demo while the guy wasn't looking, so problem solved. I've never had any personal problems with Gamestop before this, but I've found a lot of it depends on the employee you get, sometimes you get someone that seems like they probably troll IGN in their free time, sometimes you get genuinely nice people, it just depends.

I don't know about there not being any character development in Metroid. For me, at least, Metroid is very much about character development. It's just that the usual character development in Metroid is through the power-ups. Now these clearly aren't the same types of character development, but I think it means that they understand what makes it compelling. Just saying, I wouldn't give up on it just yet. Especially after all of the controversy surrounding Prime before it's release turned out to be nothing. I think Nintendo tends to know more about Metroid than the fans give them credit for. I'm not saying the story will be great, and I'm still cautious, but I think we have to wait and see before passing judgment.

Samus' voice doesn't sound bad to me, it's emotionless, but purposefully. The only thing that bothers me is that the slow-motion flashback seems really cheesy.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #11 Discussion: Super Mario RPG
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:40:46 PM »
I really don't like this game. I don't know what it is but the Mario RPG's always just bore me. I tried to play the Thousand Year Door, and was actually really exited for it, and I got about 3/4 of the way through it only to give up out of sheer boredom. This game is the same way, only worse, because I don't have any illusions that it is going to get better at some point because of my reaction to the other games.
The combat takes just enough attention to be obnoxious. Everyone seems to love the idea that you have to pay attention to the combat, but really, for me it's so simple that I'm bored, but it takes too much attention for me to be able to do something else at the same time, like I do with a lot of turn-based RPGs. It makes every single battle extremely tedious, the same problem I had with the Thousand Year Door. I understand why people like this game, but for me it's just too tedious, and the writing isn't really good enough to get me through it, so it's just aggravating. I might come back to this at some point and try to plough farther in, but at this point, I'm just frustrated, and I don't think I'm very far in at all.

Just went back and played this for SNES. I just have to say that the graphics are terrible, the music is cheesy, and it is extremely sensitive to goal tending, but somehow it still has a charm that makes me feel like I did back in the day.

Alright! This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Honestly, I would be happy if they could incorporate the motion-plus shooting of Sports Resort with the old game. I think EA's use of motion-plus for their other sports games bodes well for NBA Jam.

You just better man the **** up for 203, dude. We gotta wreck that ep.
Can't wait, I wasn't around for 103, but going back to it it is the funniest episode.

How do you get to a champion, is it just get to a 2000 skill level?

73
Isn't the spin jump a shorter jump? If it isn't, then I've always made this game harder than it is.

Something that really pisses me off is that some of the secret exits are the real exits, and the straightforward path doesn't do anything.

74
So I think that you probably could distinguish SMB3 and SMW as a twitch platformer vs. an exploration platformer. So it really would end the argument as just the basis of taste.

Out of pure curiosity, who plays movies in their xboxes?

I've seemed to notice a trend that they die much faster if you play movies in them.

I heard that's the case with all consoles that do play movies, the drive motor isn't designed to handle that.
Oh, Nintendo, you knew what was right for us all along. Are people who don't use friend codes going to start being killed off next?

That said, the only time I've had anything Nintendo break was my NES after like 15 years. The only non-Nintendo console I've had was a PS1, and one day that decided not to turn on, several years before the NES did, mind you. The PS1 breaking was what me go with a GameCube over a PS2, that and Wind Waker. I can't imagine going through 7 consoles, the one PS1 made me abandon Sony.
