TalkBack / Sega and Sammy Call it Quits
« on: May 07, 2003, 11:22:08 AM »
Heh! I thought that'd be the case, apparently the Sammy quote panned out (of course, they would never say that as a direct reason, but there were probably other reasons as well).

For some reason, it doesn't feel like the right time for Microsoft to pick them up, but I usually call these sorts of things poorly. EA, sadly, seems more likely. But I'm holding out and hoping for Namco. Man, they would make such a team.

Nintendo Gaming / RUMOR: Super Mario RPG 3
« on: May 05, 2003, 07:41:08 PM »
Paper Mario worried me when I first saw it, because I thought it might be simplified (not just on outward appearances, but some of the early promo videos made it look VERY child-oriented) and not very faithful to the original, but Intelligent Systems did a very good job with it, and it almost referenced ideas from the original Mario RPG a little TOO much. ^_^; Almost.

Shame this is a fake, I wouldn't count on a new Mario RPG being announced this year. But hey, I wouldn't complain if it WAS...

Er, if Nintendo was to "die," they probably wouldn't have the MONEY to produce a huge final game.

Most things that end with a death end with a whimper. Ask any fan of the Archie Sonic comics when first the Super Specials and then the Knuckles series were cancelled. *rolls his eyes* Often there isn't enough warning to do a "huge final" thing, and everything is focused on the business anyway at that point.

If he's still around and actively working on them, Nintendo would probably "sell off" Miyamoto (officially he'd announce he would move to the company with his creations by his own choice, unofficially... Well, if he feels detached enough from them, he might branch off and start all new series elsewhere, but he's quite attached to his current works) and some of the more popular franchises with him. They would be stupid not to, especially if they were in a bad enough financial position to have to close (you can't always afford pride at that point), and other companies would be rabidly bidding against eachother trying to pick up the package.

But that thought is a LONG way off. Nintendo's got a large surplus of cash saved up, they're not in any particular financial danger now or in the forseeable future.

Yes, because if you don't like something, you're obviously an unfair nitpicker. :P

Nintendo Gaming / 3rd Party Characters in 1st Party Games?
« on: May 05, 2003, 07:23:05 PM »
It might be interesting to see the Triforce angle pushed slightly, since those two companies (Sega and Namco) do have special agreements with Nintendo. Maybe one character per each company in a new Smash Bros. (Sonic and Klonoa or Pacman, probably. ;P) I don't want to constantly see Sonic in Mario games, but since they have been famous long-time rivals from a corporate standpoint, it'd be fun to see them show up together once in a game, even if it was for something stupid. (DKC "cameo" notwithstanding.)

But, c'mon, Klonoa would make a great Smash Bros. character.

"Hi, I don't know what I'm holding, but buy it anyway!"

57
Oh, I'm sure you guys would buy it all over again on your GBAs...

Unfortunately, I'm not being sarcastic. Come on, I know that time can make anything seem nostalgic, but Yoshi's Story was a weak, weak game. I heard practically nothing but complaints when it came out, and I'm not talking about people expecting a "cool" game, but many found it annoying, others way too easy, and the few that DID like it found it way, way too short. (Even after NoA added in that extra "Get only Honeydew Mellons" goal, whatever the special fruit was.)

Some people will defend anything because it has the Nintendo name on it.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo VIP - I'll give up

Hm, nice looking theme, I wonder if they've done a "Platinum" version? (Shame I'm not in XP, though, so I wouldn't get the full effect.)

But, bleaugh, what a movie to be watching. ;D *points at the CD listed in your Explorer window*

Nintendo Gaming / New Metroid and Mario Kart
« on: May 05, 2003, 06:31:49 PM »
Many of the ending artwork pieces, especially in the Japanese version of Fusion, focused on Samus' past and early years, perhaps the game will feature Samus in her roots, developing the skills we've known her for?

Or maybe it's just a cool name.

It's kind of glitchy... it only checks for the speed jump once for me, and if you click on the pictures, you can't close it very reliably.

"Bionic Commando Sequel"? When was THAT announced? O_o For that matter, Sly Cooper 2? (Although that's more believable.)

Are you sure this is a real list, or just a fanboy's collection with some of the titles only based on weak rumors?

Nintendo Gaming / sonic advance 2
« on: May 05, 2003, 05:56:47 PM »
Generally you only go for the emeralds once per character, it's not like the previous Sonic games where you could casually go for the emeralds along the way. But the game saves that you have them.

The trick to the special stages is collecting a string of rings and trying not to break the chain much, you get multiplier bonuses that fill up your quota fast. It helps to smack the little "5" ring circles as you do it, too.

TalkBack / Mega Man Animated Series Premieres This Month
« on: May 05, 2003, 05:40:01 PM »
"is," PIAC, it's another dubbed anime, it airs on Fox on Saturday mornings. (The "Fox Box" I think it's called.) I've heard it's pretty flat and uninteresting.

I've been watching Sonic X episodes as they're released onto the net (the fifth one was just released the other day), though, it's very good so far. The first, third, and fifth episodes were all great, and the second one wasn't too bad, either. (The fourth, unfortunately, was very uninteresting and just kind of filler.) It's a good trend, it should be a series to watch for once you can see it.

Didn't Sammy publicly attack and downplay Sega after the talks with Namco were revealed?

Nintendo Gaming / bonus discs
« on: May 03, 2003, 03:29:01 PM »
Well, Starfox 2 doesn't need to be on a seperate disc, they could just put that as an unlockable or option on the regular game disc.

They really need to do something about that game, though. It was reportedly 95% complete at CES. Two ROMs of close-to-complete versions (need some bug fixes, especially having to do with Star Wolf's team) have floated around the net. It's a quality game, too, it just got cancelled for politics, since it was so late in the SNES's life cycle and Nintendo wanted to only promote the upcoming N64 version.

Nintendo Gaming / Zoonami Speculation and Questions
« on: May 03, 2003, 03:25:32 PM »
I'm not saying they're the same type of game or anything, but does anyone else wonder if the code name for the project, Game Zero, is a small dig at Rare? It does seem similar to the title of a game Rare was working on, Perfect Dark Zero, and they are ex-Rare employees, it might be a bit of a vague company joke...

I think it was pretty blatant IGNXbox was just kicking the can around, writing an entertaining, semi-daydreaming article. They're more prone to writing things like this ("Blarg the competition will be dead and we will own Mario and Xbox will reign supreme"). At least the "Today's Story" image for it was pretty and kind of funny.

True, but I think he meant more in terms of innovation and polish-level, rather than, "It will be Mario 64 2."

That didn't stop him or any of the other Sonic crew from using karts (well, carts), in Sonic Drift 1 AND 2 for the Game Gear, AND Sonic Adventure's Twinkle Circuit AND SA2's racing mode.

It would make a lot more sense to use the GCN's own online capabilities, I'd think, and just being able to access and send e-mail is much, much different from anything like Online Play. There doesn't have to be a single server set up to handle it, unless a dedicated Nintendo server will be handling the mailing.

_Unless_ Nintendo decided to use a dedicated server. But gamers could potentially set it up to use their current, ISP-provided mail servers for both sending and receiving, just like gamers have before on the Dreamcast, PS2, heck, even the Saturn Netlink. Nintendo would not have to pay one cent for those servers themselves. But there's no doubt, yeah, a Nintendo e-mail server for this might run a decent amount of money, although the save files aren't that large, so even though there'd be a mass of users, the space eaten up and bandwidth wouldn't be as bad as, say, supporting a net game.

And Nintendo's going to have to handle technical support no matter what method they use. :/

Nintendo Gaming / Gameboy player question

This is like the most overasked question ever.

The answer is very simple.  NO.  The Gameboy Player turns the Gamecube into a GBA.  Therefore it is impossible for the unit to function as a Gamecube and a GBA at the same time which is what would be required to do a link up.  Plus in reality a GBA/GC link up requires two screens which isn't possible when they share the same screen.

Surely though Nintendo will share enough of the emulator/boot code so that future titles will be able to access what's in the cartridge port of the Gameboy Player, though? It's not like you hook the thing directly to the video ribbon cables  and controller hookups inside your Gamecube, it does use some code on bootup to know where things go... Nintendo would've been foolish to build the add-on and not allow that functionality when they've been the ones so behind this GBA+GC connection push... But I guess it could be true...

Edit: You don't suppose there'll be another e-Reader situation, where the American Gameboy Player will have this functionality, but the Japanese version won't (like how the Japanese version of the e-Reader lacked the link port and the extra S-RAM until the recently announced release of the e-Reader+ there)? Maybe when there were mumblings before about the American Gameboy Player not needing a boot disc, they were actually working on something closer to these lines? It wouldn't work for older games like Metroid Prime probably, but for newer games, it'd make things a lot more convenient for those who already owned GBPs.

Nintendo Gaming / Bio's updated Sonic Adventure DX thread.
« on: May 03, 2003, 11:23:17 AM »
They've spent their time making Sonic as shiny as possible. Look at that Chaos 0 video IGN recently posted, that's one shiny Sonic.

Still, though, you'd think a port of a 1998 (yes, 98, I don't care when it was released in America) Dreamcast game wouldn't suffer from slowdown, but actually have a faster framerate. (Are they trying for 60 and the dips down to 30 are what people are noticing? Or are they still staying at 30 and getting the dips anyway?)

I like the idea of DX, and what they're doing looks good, but I really wish they'd spend an extra two or three months on it. There's been some DRASTIC changes between now and some of the first screenshots released just two to three months ago (and they didn't seem to even have a great deal ported over yet then), they're really cramming the work on this thing (it's like it was a back project for a couple of months, and then suddenly Sonic Team decided to focus on it and double or quadruple the staff working on it), and I'm just worried in the end it's not going to get the extra effort they intended. Videos of Windy Valley still show off awkward cameras and pop-up on a DC level, if they're still working on that, how much time are they going to have left to really add a lot of bonuses and extras? The 12 GG games and the 50-60 extra Missions are a given, but I think they had planned for a lot more and they just aren't going to have time. And a port like this doesn't usually get bumped until it's refined, it's low priority, it just gets released.

I'm going to buy it anyway, though. Even the promise of some of the extras, like new scenes and a different ending, are enough to get this Sonic fan's wallet open. :P

Nintendo Gaming / SD Adapter
« on: May 03, 2003, 11:12:45 AM »
Nintendo could always release or bundle Save Management software that let you archive saves into the SD format, that wouldn't be limited by the save format block limit, but it would be tedious to boot up and repeatedly swap save files back onto another card (or even into an "Active" area where the SD Card acts like a memory card), then reboot for what game you wanted.

The reason DQ isn't going to be at the show is because it's not ready and because it hasn't even been unveiled in japan yet. Japanese RPGs are usually unveiled in Japan first.

What if they do what Square is doing with Final Fantasy on Gamecube, though, releasing a spinoff title? (Crystal Chronicles.) Nintendo is semi-banking on Square RPG fans warming up to the Cube more via this game, but could that work just as well on the Xbox for a Dragon Quest spinoff? Or will it not work for either?
