I'm inclined to believe that Mario Kart will not be online, but rather, optimized for LAN play between Gamecubes. It just makes more sense. Nintendo does not have any online plans I believe. It was isn't a good business model. With LAN, Nintendo can get us all to shut up about online while we LAN it up with Mario Kart. I just hope they pack in the (possibly wireless) LAN connector with Mario Kart. That way, everybody wins.

Now, about these innovations... Shigeru was comparing them to Animal Crossing in an interview a while ago. I cannot begin to fathom what he's doing with Mario Kart. I'm hoping for more interactive, "krazy" tracks. Here's some of my ideas:

Donkey Kong Construction Track: Race through the construction site from the original DK Arcade! Zig-zag though the first level-ish design of the track (without latters, obviously) while barrels are rolling at you! It's hard explaining it on a message board, but it has the potential to be pretty cool if Nintendo got it right.

Pipe Land Track: Sort of like that Yoshi Cliff track on the 64, where there are tons of ways to get to the goal, but you have to find a good route. Some pipes will let you enter and exit, while those plant dudes will pop out of the bad pipes.

Super Mario Bros. 1 Track: I really liked the old school look of the Super Mario Bros. 1 stage in Smash Bros. Melee. I think it'd be cool if Nintendo could do something like that in the next Mario Kart.

Cloud Track: Now, all the Mario's usually have some sort of sky level in them, right? We need one in Mario Kart too! I would love to race on some clouds, a curvy rainbow, or even those busy (or buzzy?) beetles from SMB3! So much potential.

Castle Courtyard Track: One of those easy, first time levels. A circular track around the castle for the most part, but at one point, you'd bust into the castle and raise in a hall for a little bit.

I'll stop there, though I have a ton more track ideas. I think Nintendo should also include the 'old' 64 tracks in there for bonus stages (unlockable like in Smash Melee). Also, throw in a few non-looping tracks. Have a checkpoint at 3 different spots on a super long track. Bring back coins while you're at it Nintendo!  Also, customization of the Karts would be cool. I originally posted this idea in the GA Forums. Collect a certain amount of coins to buy stuff for your Kart. Like, Nintendo-ish bumper stickers. Toad with a "The Princess is in another Castle!" sticker is hilarious. Wario with a "Have a rotten day" sticker would equally rock.

Lastly, NO SEGA OR NON-MARIO CHARACTERS! It's M-A-R-I-O Kart for a reason!
From Matthew, with love.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but this is just another point I'd like to make:

Instead of flooding their system with online games it's very likely that Nintendo would try to offer unique content, something only they can provide. Something like Pokemon or Animal Crossing (if either were to be online).

Not just tossing out a pretty basic racer and dressing it up for online, while people can find games like this with more invloving content and more interesting options, not only on other systems but on the PC.

why not put sonic in the game. sonic is practically a nintendo character nowadays. besides, i would love to see him in a mario kart game. heck, i would love to see a mario/sonic game pulled off in some strange way. but alas, it is only my own opinion. and yes i am a pretty old school gamer, but i like this notion of something other than a nintendo character in mario kart.

I'm disappointed that Mario Kart won't be online.  Not so much because I *really* want online play, but because it is a "standard" feature that is now missing.   It's getting to the point (and you'll see this more and more often) that if a PS2 or XBox game offers multiplayer, and it is not online, it's immediately considered lacking.  I've heard this time and again both in print and television reviews, and I only expect to hear it more often.  I have a PS2 as well as a cube, and I'm fairly sure that I will never buy another PS2 multiplayer game that doesn't have an online component.  Again, it's not because I must have it online, but because I want the option.  Just like I want the option to have rumble turned on; or the option to use progressive scan.   Hell, I don't even have a progressive scan TV, but that option is important to me.
I'm sympathetic to Nintendo's stance that it's not smart from a business standpoint at this time.  That's fine, and I suppose it's more my loss than theirs when it comes to my buying predilections.   However, as the trend towards online continues, and more and more people like me begin to expect an online component as as standard option, they'll sell less games.

I was really looking forward to Mario Kart.   Now, if I get it at all, I'll get it used.

Man, I really hope AC2 has a true online component.  I don't want it to be an MMOG, just a simpler way of communicating with friends.

If Shiggy can't show us a real pic of mario kart maybe thats because its cel-shaded. That would be amazing. Just think about zelda and mario kart at the same time..................................................WHOA!!

I'd like to see 200cc, 300cc, or even 500cc races.  Bowser's Castle was always fast, it would be fun to push the envelope of speed.

I'd also like to see LAN capability.  If you could hook up 2 gamecubes and 2 tvs up and play 8 players in one place, that would be decent enough.

I think the game will probably feature non-Mario characters but they'll be unlockable secrets. The game will start off like a traditional Mario Kart game but as you progress, you'll get to earn new non-Mario characters along with tracks and power-ups. It will probably be similar to Smash Bros where, after a tournament, a new challenger will approach.
You'll find yourself racing Kirby on a Dreamland course with a new Star Rod power-up or something. It could be really cool. Actually, my theory is that Kirby game ("Air Ride") Hal showed off a while ago was actually Mario Kart in disguise. I just find it hard to believe Nintendo would actually let Hal make a Kirby game so similar to Mario Kart. It just wouldn't make sense. I think showing off "Air Ride" was just Hal's way off showing off Mario Kart without anyone knowing and at E3 the truth will be revealed.

I know a lot of people will freak out over the idea, but I also get the feeling the game will be cel-shaded and this is the change Miyamoto was referring to when he said he couldn't show screenshots. The original MK was a very cartoonish game and IMO the more realistic style of the N64 sequel just didn't fit and kind of detracted from the light-heartedness of the game. So I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo decided to go back to the SNES style with the help of cel-shaded graphics.

As for online play. I don't think it's needed and probably won't be included. LAN support might be cool though. I doubt a lot of people would take advantage of it though.

I've read quite a few of the posts in this thread and it blows me away how many people dont want to see this game online. I want to see all games online, not because I would use the feature all the time, but because it would be nice to have the option incase I wanted to. Some of us dont have alot of people around to play multi-player games and Mario Kart is definitely a multi-player game. So if it's possable to ad the feature, why not put it in so those of us that want to use it, can. I'd be willing to put up with a little lag. Give me Mario Kart online.

The only advantage to online gaming is that you can make fun of people, and you probably can't even do that in Mario Kart.  And there's playing when your friends aren't around, but I'd rather just face the computer, then.

Online multiplayer could work laglessly, even with dialup, if weapons' projectiles are undodgeable.  The problem is that opponents' cars are dodgeable projectiles.  I'm not sure the game would be fun without collisions between cars.

Higher difficulty settings on most games almost always favor the computer and give them special advantages- it's what makes them so difficult. Good AI, like in fighting games, is one factor, but I'm almsot certain that in games with super hard difficulties (leve 9 cpu's in SSBM, Legendary in Halo, etc) actually favor the computer and give them advantages while they put you at a disadvantage, which makes it even harder to win.

I was just about to post that list, but you beat me to it. I am pretty sure (95% sure) it is reliable, and even if it wasn't, i'm sure half of those characters would be in it anyways. I just wonder why they are putting so many _____ koopa's in it? Is it to try and make up for the absense of Koopa Troopa since the Snes Mario Kart?

Online for Mario Kart would be fun but lag would be a serious issue especially for dial -up modems. I think they could get it running pretty good on the broadband modem but since most people have dial-up that would suck for the majorityand I understand why they deceided it shouldn't be online. Like everyone says its always more fun to play when your opponent is next to you and you can talk trash LAN should be a good addition. I have admit while LAN is good my main problem with it is acessiablity. I mean you have to have a broadband modem and gamecube and so do your other friends and more then one tv. I'd be lucky to have one friend besides me to have all that and whats the point then might as well play regular multiplayer. But I guess its all good for those who have it and it doesn't cost Nintendo any money to keep up server maintainace so its defintely attractive to them.

Who is Koopa the Quick? That name doesn't ring a bell could someone give me a link to a picture or tell me what game he is from? Anyway that cast of characters sounds sweet, now hopefully the statistics won't be in groups, like the fast racers who are just the little guys and are fast, and the average racers etc etc. I would like to see each racer have individual stats.

Online play would be awesome and I don't believe it would be laggy. Maybe every once in a while but nothing you can't handle, and if you don't want to play online don't, it's just an option for us gamers that do. I am hoping for online play because computer AI is never really that great.
