REVIEWS: SumoSac Sultan
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:42:14 PM »
While the Sultan clocks in at close to 50 pounds, it is one of the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat in.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=18200

My previous experiences with bean bag chairs have wound up in tragedy thanks to my cats' tendency to relieve themselves all over them. However, Sumo Lounge's line of bean bag chairs does not appear to remind cats of kitty litter thanks to the foam they use. Aside from being resistant from cat urine, the SumoSac Sultan is also one of the most comfortable chairs I've ever sat in, but also one of the most unwieldy.

The Sultan is the second biggest bean bag that Sumo Lounge offers and weighs close to 50 pounds. For anyone curious as to how big it actually is, it is almost as big as my twin-sized bed and dwarfs my family's recliner. For more information, you can check out the chair's product page.

The pieces of the chair right out of the box

The setup of the chair was an adventure in and of itself. It was shipped in one box containing two vacuum-sealed cubes of shredded furniture-grade urethane foam, the liner, and the microsuede cover. To set up the chair, you have to remove the cubes from their vacuum seal and place them into the liner, where they begin to expand. Then you put the cover over it. There wasn't any instant gratification from un-boxing the chair, as it took time for the foam to set. The company advises that you wait at least 24 hours to let it properly settle.

Once the foam settles, you can enjoy your SumoSac. Because of its sheer size, the Sultan is an extremely comfortable chair that you can easily sink into. The foam used in the chair molds to the contours of your body and makes for a relaxing experience. The chair's velvety microsuede cover is easy to remove, which is good in case it gets dirty. It can be washed normally and easily fits back onto the chair. The zipper is covered by a seam and buries into the chair so it is easily accessible but also doesn't get caught on anything while you're lounging around.

As stated before, the chair is close to 50 pounds and is very large, which makes it difficult to move around. As long as it is kept in one spot, the chair is fantastic. However, if you plan on moving it around your house, you'd be better off getting one of Sumo Lounge's smaller chairs, like the http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=14979">Omni Bean Bag Chair.

Despite its size and heft, the SumoSac Sultan is a great chair because of its mix of comfort, body support, and stability. It is great for lounging around while playing Wii and DS, reading, or watching television. It's worth the $250 price of entry, but only if it's meant to be a semi-permanent fixture.

Pros:

  • Very, very comfortable
  •
  • Cover is easy to remove and wash

  •        Cons:

  • Lack of portability
  •
  • Setup process can take a while
  •
  • You won't want to get out of it

  •                Appearance:  7.0
The Sultan is a large mass that could easily overwhelm a small room. It's not the most visually appealing chair in the world, but as long as it's not bigger than everything else in the room, it looks fine.

                   Comfort: 10.0
The urethane foam inside the Sultan cradles your body and offers a good deal of support. This chair is outrageously comfortable.

                   Quality:  9.0
This easy-to-sink-into chair is sure to be a conversation piece as it is truly something else. There aren't many chairs that rival the comfort appeal of this chair and it shows.

                          Value:  8.0
While the $250 price might be a little steep, this is a high quality chair and is worth the money – supposing you have the space for it.

           Construction:  9.0
The SumoSac Sultan is very durable; it can withstand a beating and still remain in great shape.  This large chair is very well designed with its comfortable foam, resistant liner, and microsuede cover. After its initial setup, there is little that can be done to ruin the chair. Stains are even easy to get out.

           Final:  9.0
While it is a bit pricey and larger than the common chair, the SumoSac Sultan is fantastic, whether you're playing video games, watching TV, or reading.

That thing is freaking HUGE. It reminds me of a dark Chu Jelly from the Zelda series.

A shame it's $250, no way in hell I would spend that much. $50 and I would not hesitate.

After getting this for review and sitting on it and stuff, I have to say that I wish I got a smaller one. This is completely unwieldy for a college kid in a dorm.

Jonny's Omni is plenty big and really comfortable, so I definitely can recommend that one.

The original package that came in the mail looks like packaged drugs.

Also, $250 is quite a hefty price. I just bought an amazing leather recliner for $200 so that seems really outrageous to me. Regardless, I REALLY want to sit in that thing, seems super comfortable.

Belive me, it is so comfortable. It's just so damn unwieldy. And it's a bitch to move.

Even the Omni is really too large for my apartment.  I don't use it a ton, but it's useful when people are over to play games or watch a movie.  I like to sit on it while playing a game, but it takes some work to put it into a position that won't stress my back and neck.

For those complaining about the price, keep in mind this is a piece of furniture.  You have to treat it like one in terms of both size and cost.  Also, Sumo's prices are pretty good compared to their competitors who probably have inferior products.

The obvious solution here is to just get a bigger dorm/apartment/house.

I've wanted one of Sumo's products for years, but I keep talking myself out of it.  Can you tell me about how high off the ground your eyeballs are when you lounge on this one?  I'm concerned about the vertical viewing angle of my TV.
