Red Steel 2 Megathread!
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:33:31 AM »
THIS IS IT BABY MEGATHREAD IS GO

Red Steel 2 is the upcoming followup to the commercially successful, critically panned Wii launch title of November 2006. Instead of being a direct sequel, it is a "spiritual" sequel bringing back the basics concepts and not much else. It's a first person shooter/brawler that Retro studios advised on, so if you can't forgive Ubisoft for their crappy games, do it for Retro!

You play a mysterious stranger in the town of Caldera. Caldera is a modern day alternate reality city they call a mashup of Reno and Tokyo. You have a katana and you have a six shooter. Time to mess up some hockey mask wearing gangsters.

Highlights:
- Motion Plus exclusive, it's bundled with the game.
- Single Player only
- Cel Shaded Graphics, they look amazing.
- Interactive world, you can shoot up the surroundings, hit or shoot open doors, and crack safes. More mini game like events are promised.

It's coming March 23rd 2010, you better buy it.

I will rent first, unless it has really great online or significantly better controls.

Will this thread also include the enormous amounts of disappointment found in the first game?

I'm more than positive that Red Steel 2 is going to do circles around the first game. I mean, I know they just wanted to get the game out by launch so bad that several dozen features didnt make it in. Although I'm going to rent it first since the first one was, well...really rushed. I havent traded in a game in a long time and both Red Steel and Raving Rabbids just felt that...once Nintendo's stuff comes along nobody would want to even touch either of these titles...

Hopefully Ubisoft can change my mind but...just have to wait and see.

Didn't they say something that amounted to a tacit admission that the first game sucked? Yes, I know it's probably the PR machine spinning at full speed again, but then again very rarely does a developer admit "our game sucked, please give the sequel a chance because we promise it'll be better".

I actually enjoyed Red Steel...so, uh, yeah.

Yeah it did.  Fundamental promises made by the developers were undelivered on.

What was promised: "Control like the Wii needs great AI"
What we got: AI that is so dumb it opens fire when it is standing behind an explosive barrel.

What was promised: The decision to spare lives of your enemies will get them to help you win
What we got: A "special move" system that was ineffectual because every move was impractical to use in battle, and access to a gun vault that really only stood to arm me between levels.

What was promised: Tight sword fighting
What we got: Wii-elbow

This game needs to be markedly better than the first.  Just adding online play wont make it anything more than lipstick on a pig.  The sword combat engine needs to go.  Just replace it, the current one is not good.  The AI needs to be smart, because the game was far too much like a shooting range.  The interplay of saving and killing needs to be more important, and I think it all but demands the addition of lackeys from amongst the ranks of those you spared.

To clarify:
If you kill a low level boss his goons should be in you way for the remainder of the game.
If you save a low level boss he should dismiss his goons, or if he joins you turn them against the primary enemy.

Joined characters may join you on the next mission, and their presence (assuming they stay alive in fire fights) could trigger events that fundamentally change how levels play out.

It was a launch game from Ubisoft Paris, the same people who made XIII. *shrug* It makes sense that we got what we got when we take that into consideration. That team really needs to mature if they want to create a definitive FPS experience, on the Wii or anywhere else.

I think the game will be great, and the only thing that really needs to happen is for Ubisoft to figure out a good control scheme for the Wiimote.  And a new sword fighting system.

I would completely ditch special moves in the sword fighting.  Very rarely are sword fights going to be won by a special move.

Instead I would have 6 basic strikes that you learn.  Each Strike can attack or parry other attacks.  Some attacks will go through different Parries and still hit, so you must learn to see which attack the enemy is pulling off.

These attacks can be easily pulled off by simple gestures and button combinations.

Horizontal Slash
Vertical Slash
Horizontal Slash A
Horizontal Slash B
Vertical Slash A
Vertical Slash B

Companies forget you don't have to have tons of sword moves to make the swordplay fun.  You just have to have Sword play that balance, and actually works.

Finally for an interesting Special you could allow sword wielders to Hold A and B for a blocking stance.  This stance can put the sword in a block position, and you can move it around the screen.  During this you can move the sword to parry bullets from hitting you.

Now throw these elements into an online FPSer with 8 player games and you have yourself a great online experience.

Shy Guy:

Ha.

I see what you did there.  I see it.  Oh yes, I read it too.

What I mean is, Sword duels aren't going to be won by some special secret sword technique, but from basic understanding of positioning timing of basic sword strikes.  So in a game like this, it would be easier to just have a smaller list of moves so that you can have great control and a well balanced (though perhaps not as deep) sword fighting system.

As for Street Fighter you are right.  I rarely defeat my opponents with Dragon Punches or Fireballs, but with a nice flying air kick into a combo.

And Chun Li is hot...so is Cammy.

Anyway, I know I'm in the minority here, but I liked the sword fighting in Red Steel. It was easy for me. The least favorite parts of video games for me is often the boss fights.

I didn't mind the sword fighting in Red Steel, but it could've been done better instead of feeling so much like a novelty minigame.

It was easy for me, too.  But it was boring.  Circle, dodge or block attack, randomly wiggle remote around to get 3-4 quick hits in, repeat.  It'd be more fun if the controls were responsive enough to make attacking feel more deliberate.

the sword fighting sucked until my second play-thru. After that once i better understood the special sword attacks i was able to enjoy the sword battles a little more.

it still wasn't perfect but got me thru some of the more annoying battles much quicker, like the ones against the ninjas. It became more offence than defense.
