So media, NSMBWii is selling out Bioshock 2 (in France) which has been recently released. Is it STILL lazy?
Sales don't speak of quality. McDonald's has sold more hamburgers than any other restaurant, but that doesn't mean they taste the best (or even taste like food).

Hmm, what on earth is that supposed to mean?  Do you think NMSBwii is a bad quality game?

I don't own either game, but I've heard mostly very glowing reports of NMSBwii (IGN except of course, but then, they're morons), more so than I've heard for Bioshock 2 (which seems to get dissed a lot as a pretty but otherwise meh regurgitation of the first Bioshock).

Absolutely not. My point was simply that sales alone do not invalidate the claims that it is a lazy game.

I think IGN call NSMBWii lazy because it recycles some content and doesn't really have any new features than multiplayer. I don't know, it isn't my opinion so go ask somebody who thinks that. My point was simply that sales do not equal quality and using sales isn't a good counterpoint when someone calls a game something like "lazy."

Well with your McDonald's example, they would not be selling more than anyone else if they were charging $15 like 'quality' hamburgers typically cost.  But with NSMBWii, it sells at or close to the same price as any other game.  Yet it has sold over 10 million.  SMG is not seen as a lazy game, yet it doesn't even come close in sales.  I think that after a certain number of sales, you can't deny a title's greatness.  And clearly consumers don't consider it lazy, evidenced by the high post-Christmas sales created through word-of-mouth.

I don't think that people's enjoyment of a game has much to do with whether or not it is lazy, as recycling content from a great game isn't going to result in a bad game. I think that was IGN's point anyway, considering that their article was titled "Nintendo is lazy and you don't care." They're right, we don't care. We enjoy good games regardless of how much "effort" went into them.

I revisited that editorial, and while recycling is mentioned briefly, the bulk consists of slamming Nintendo for not pushing visual or audio limits.  Personally, I don't consider this lazy.  If they were undershooting consumers desires, then I'd agree, but clearly this hasn't happened.  If consumers thought they were being presented with a 'lazy' product that's valued didn't match its price, they wouldn't have bought it en masse.  It's simple demand.

Thinking about it, it's rather ironic that the editorial encourages over-production, because this is putting game companies out of business.  If the industry followed Matt's advice exclusively, he'd be out of a job within a decade.

And that's taking the editorial at face value.  There's some not so subtle undertones that have cost IGN a number of visitors.

Again, I realize you're talking about the recycling aspect, but I think that was only a minor point of the editorial.

Well, I think one of the things the article was saying is that people should raise their standards.

I don't agree with the article, but more understand where they are coming from. I'm not going to defend something I don't agree with, though.  Personally, I wouldn't use sales as an indication for the amount of effort that went into a game, but that's just me. Games like Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda Twilight Princess clearly had higher production values, but I also don't feel as if that automatically makes them more enjoyable. That actually might be shown by sales, however...  :-\

The McDonald's example was probably better suited as a reason why cheap games tend to sell well.

Games like Tetris don't need to push video or audio limits.

There are all sorts of ways to push the boundaries, and there are all sorts gamers out there who are discovering, and rediscovering, stuff that the industry seems to keep forgetting every 5, 10, 15 years. It's a big ocean. You'll find fish of all ages, shape, and size in it.

Simple doesn't necessarily mean bad, but it really all depends on the genre. NSMB is a 2D platformer which means it only has to be a simple game in order to be good, and in fact as Lao Tzu said "you destroy the fish with too much poking" so more is not always better.

But then again, there are genres where that rule doesn't apply. Some games you want to have tons of stuff and ultra detail.
is your sanity...

WiiWare Market Grows to Nearly $60M USD in 2009

Quote from: Nintendo Life
According to an analysis by Forecasting and Analyzing DigitalEntertainment, or FADE, WiiWare titles raked in nearly $59 million USDduring 2009 in the Western market alone (North/South America, Europe, and Australia), with a 30% jump in revenue compared to the previousyear. A service that seems to have more success with third-partydevelopers, with FADE estimating their 10% of the market claimingnearly 70% of the combined download revenue that totals around $125million USD. The Virtual Console, on the other hand, has suffered itsown problems. With periods where it sees no updates in the Wii ShopChannel weekly additions, coupled with the promotion that Nintendo ranwhere gamers could claim a free NES game if the Internet Channel waspurchased prior to going free (which led to an estimated over half amillion free giveaways), Virtual Console games took in an estimated $66million USD but are believed to have dropped 25% in revenue last year.

They apparently compiled numbers from the Nintendo Channel and made estimates off of that. So these numbers are by no means concrete, but they do show the gist of where Nintendo's services are going. The article cites Nintendo's lackadaisical efforts on the system as the reason VC revenue has not been better. Releasing one or even no games in a week kills off people's interest. I don't even pay much attention to VC releases and stumble upon new ones by accident weeks later or if the online buzz is big enough.

There are 347 VC games in North America and 508 total. There are also 189 WiiWare games in North America. So I think it's safe to say those are just how many have been released in North America.
