20th Anniversary Micro $10 coupon?
« on: December 06, 2005, 04:20:48 PM »
Hello everyone.

Today I purchased the 20th Anniversary Micro.  I was aware - as shown on Nintendo's official site - that there was a $10 coupon usable towards several Nintendo GBA games (such as Donkey Kong Country, etc) available with the system.

Now, this might be a stupid question, but WHERE is this coupon?

I know that on the outside of the box, there was a small red sticker saying that the coupon was included. But I saw the Gamestop employee take it off when he handed it to me. I figured it was included in the box so I didn't think anything of it.

Then I come home and look through everything and I can't find it.

Did the employee take it? Was that little red sticker the coupon?

If so I'm going to go back to Gamestop tomorrow and raise hell.

Let me also add that I did get it for the 89.99 price point, same as the other Micros. Is this normal? My gf just suggested that maybe he took it off and put it towards the Micro, but I looked at the receipt and it says "$10 off, Reason: New Micro System."

Wtf is going on? Where's the coupon? Even the official site shows the coupon as available. Did I just not get it or did the employee take it?  I'm hoping someone here might have more information about this if possible.

Thanks everyone.

No.  I checked about three times, at least.  Had the GF check to just make sure I wasn't being stupidly blind.

Either I didn't get it OR the employee took it, knowing what it was.  I'm trying to find out from other owners at this point.  I've asked at another website and one person has said the employee did indeed take it.

If that is true....wow.  I'm going to demand to talk to corporate.  I got a lunch break, a lot of time on my hands, and very little money.  I can raise a storm for 10 bucks, yes.  That sounds petty but I'll gladly do it.

Think about it...why would the coupon be OUTSIDE of the box?  That means anyone could walk down the aisle and take all the coupons.  It doesn't make sense.

Because they keep the systems locked in the glass case and you can't get them unless you ask an employee to unlock it and get it out for you.

Look, this is why I'm asking on forums.  To try and get information.  I want to know if the guy took it or not.  I don't know if it was the outside sticker or not.  I want to know if I need to go back and demand a coupon or at least exchange it for another one.

Sorry I can't be much help.  I'll be getting the Famicom Micro for X-Mas, so if you don't get an answer by then I might be of some help.  If you get figure it out, let everyone know so I don't have the same problem.

I went back to Gamestop and spoke with a manager there.  She's been of great help to me in the past, so when I explained the situation to her she graciously listened and then looked through my materials to confirm no coupon was included.  (She also took out the Micro and said "I just had to see it" and smiled and giggled, heh.) She then offered a $10 discount on a future GBA purchase, so I pre-ordered FFIV.  She said to come back next week when she is working and she would take care of it at that time.  So I guess that means it is resolved.

Of note, two users at another forum said it was the sticker.  I went ahead and e-mailed Nintendo and received a response from their marketing department who said it should have been inside the box along with the manual and other materials.  So that was a bit confusing.  They also offered (well, the reply used the word "maybe") to send me a replacement coupon, but I replied and said that it looked like GS is taking care of the situation.

Also of note, the Micros in the glass case did *not* have the red sticker on them when I went back.  So that's a bit confusing.  I guess maybe they are supposed to be placed in the box by default and the sticker itself is just an advertisement.  Regardless, if Nintendo's official word is inside the box and it's not there, then I didn't get it.

I guess this means I don't have an exact answer to my original problem, but it is being resolved regardless and that is what makes me happy.

You can't say every Gamestop is evil just because the ones you've been to do stuff you don't like.  Strell's Gamestop fixed his problem for him, even though it's not their responsibility since Nintendo is responsible for putting the coupon in the box.  That sounds pretty darn good to me.

In the end, whether or not a particular Gamestop is bad depends mainly on the management.  The company as a whole may have a few policies you don't like, but friendly service that cares about customers is up to the people running the individual store.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I picked up my Famicom Micro last week.  The $10 coupon is indeed the red sticker on the outside of the box.  The employee seems to have nabbed your coupon.

Also, I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, so I thought I'd share with anyone interested:  The Famicom Micro does not have a removeable face plate.  I knew it didn't come with any extra face plates, but I wasn't aware that the one that it does have isn't removeable in any way.  This isn't really a big deal for me because I tend to be über careful with my systems, but if you're the kind of person who is going to scratch up your face plate you may want to steer clear of the Famicom Micro.

I didn't bring this topic back up because I didn't know if anyone would care or not, but the manager at Gamestop did indeed hold up to her word and gave me $10 off towards the purchase of FFIV.  That was very nice of her.  The receipt simply showed "$10 Coupon used" or something to that effect, so everything was successful.

Vudu is mostly right - the 20th Ed. Micro lacks the tool to remove screens.  HOWEVER, you *can* pry it off since it is essentially a high quality sticker, and I believe you can also get the tool seperately and remove it yourself, and then replace it with a faceplate.  It IS possible, but it's not suggested, and besides it looks beautiful the way it already is.

Vudu: I'm not sure this promotion is still going on, but Toys R Us had a sale on accessories.  Included were the Nintendo Sox.  While silly, they do function remarkably well as a simple cover to a micro, providing protection without taking up much room or weight.  If you were travelling with just it and no accessories or additional games, it works extremely well.  If it is still on sale, it would be 2.50 for a pack of three.  It's something to think about anyway.

Finally, wanted to mention that Nintendo has confirmed they are not making additional faceplates to buy.  Sad, really, and I haven't seen others from third parties.  I keep hoping someone will release a make-it-yourself kit, but I doubt that as well since Nintendo seems deadset on essentially phasing out the Micro by the end of this year.

I don't think that would work.  I looked on the side of mine and there isn't a spot for the tool.  Even if you could, as far as I know, you can't buy replacement Famicom face plates, so it doesn't seem like it would be worthwhile.

You might want to check your Micro again. I own a US model Famicom Micro and the faceplate is very much removable. The box just doesn't include an ejector tool. (i used a paperclip)

I had my cover off last night to clean out a spec of dust that managed to sneak onto the screen.

Uhm... just go to Nintendo.com spare parts store. They are listed right along with the other micro stuff. Famicom faceplate and battery cover.

Those lucky japanese sons of bitches are getting the Famicom player 2 controller faceplate through Club Mario.

Wow.  That is totally awesome.  Last I checked they weren't there.  Looks like I'm going to have to buy an extra face plate just in case.  Funny, I don't see a replacement face plate remover tool for purchase.  I know it's not necessary, but still odd that it's missing.

yea, a paper clip is fine. Both face plate ejector holes do not need to be pushed at the same time. Just push them one at a time and the faceplate pops off.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread.

I tried to use the $10 coupon at EB Games today and the manager denied me because he said I had to purchase the system and the game at the same time.  It doesn't say that anywhere on the coupon (that I could find).  Anyone else have this same problem or is my EB just full of a bunch of jerks?

Force it. If it doesn't say that on the coupon then you can put up a big fight. Yell and scream and call corporate and he'll give in.

It's odd, I called in and ordered a face plate removal tool (they're $1) and a Famicom faceplate - only to find out that the faceplate comes with the removal tool (at least, mine did)...
