IntelliTXT in Forums
« on: December 06, 2005, 04:39:43 AM »
We've just enabled IntelliTXT in the forums; it was previously only working on the main site.  We've been very happy with the results of IntelliTXT so far, as it's already generating some significant revenue for the site (though less than the pop ups and such), which has my brain racing for ideas to use that money in 2006 to make the site better for everyone.

I'm not sure how well it will work in the forums, if at all.  It's a rather different audience from the smorgasbord of people who read the main part of the site.  As we tweak the settings over the next week or two to determine how many links will show up per thread, which pages are excluded, etc., we'll also be seeing whether there's any increase in the click-through rate.  In other words: would forum posters actually click the green links?  I don't know, so we're going to find out.

I'm sensitive to the fact that inserting these contextual ad links in YOUR forum posts is different than putting them in OUR editorial content on the main site.  I don't know how you all will react.  If you're like me, you've learned to ignore the green links, so it may not matter.  Or maybe you're already incensed.

My point is that I'd appreciate your feedback on this matter (please be civil and thoughtful).  Also, if your feelings on it change after living with it for a few days, I'd like to hear about that.

I should also point out once again that you can completely disable IntelliTXT for this site.  Here's how to do it:

1. Hover your pointer over a green link.
2. Click "what's this?" in the top-right corner of the yellow box.
3. An explanation page will load; scroll all the way to the bottom.
4. Click the "disable" link to store a cookie that will disable IntelliTXT (only on PGC).

However, if the green links don't really bother you (whether you ever click them or not), please leave the feature enabled, as it does help our advertising rates.

Will we be held legally responsible for links placed in our posts? (yes, sounds insane but the law tends to be stranger than fiction)

You don't really have any liability when posting on the forums, as far as I know.  (But I am NOT a lawyer.)  Basically, anything you post here becomes the property of PGC, and the only way you could be held responsible for it is within the context of a criminal investigation.  I cannot imagine IntelliTXT factoring into such a scenario.

If you're concerned about porn links or something, that won't be a problem because IntelliTXT doesn't work with those kinds of advertisements.

Hmm, I'm getting a connection refusal when I try to shut them off...  It'll probably start working later... but anyway.

I have no problem with it if it is getting you guys some extra money.  It does add a bit of a load delay that I never noticed in the main site, but it has been kind of annoying in the forums.

Edit:

Also, what happens if we make a link that has normally intelliTXTed links on it?  Uhmm I probably won't be able to get it to do it but we'll see...

Harry Potter

... just cause I remember that it made one in the review...

Edit again:  Haha, just cause made one but harry potter didnt... maybe the link is keeping it from doing it...

Edit again: Ok, so it seems to skip BBCoded links, which is good (As it skipped my first "Just Cause" and added it to the second one).

Anyway, it is sort of fun to play with.

The final edit: Now "just cause" isn't being linked anymore... so apparently it changes what it links rather frequently.

Is this what all these green links are? Because they're shitting me off.
So anyway I was in the shopping center demanding to know where they kept the western potatoes when Drive Safe came around with Simple Plan blaring out telling me that driving on the wrong side of the road is ok if the other guy is drunk while I immediately jumped on my dirt racer to zoom out of ther

Yes, IntelliTXT is ad software that creates the green links.

HTML links (which are created in the source code by your BBCode) always override IntelliTXT.

If they really bother you, and the method above doesn't work, then you can always download FireFox and then the plugin Adblock (inserting "  *intellitxt.com*  " into the program), which can take care of the links for any site you may visit.

I personally find IntelliTXT ads to be the second worst kind of ads  (second only to ads with sound).

Sure, I click them more, out of habit....

I've come to the point that I just use a host blocking list.  I wouldn't mind just blocking the most annoying ads, but there isn't any way to do that.

Basically, anything you post here becomes the property of PGC,

Wait, what? I don't believe copywright transfers so easily, does it? That's like saying the Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone is the property of the coffee shop J.K. Rowling wrote it in.

Oh, as for the green links, I don't really mind them....but you guys should really work on getting rid of the pop-ups. I block them, so they're fine for me, but they're probably turning a fair number of people away, as demonstrated by comments made here.

Maybe these 06 upgrades could include a good search function for the forums?

Forget the forums, I would say that the main site needs a search feature far more.

The forums already have a search feature, we just don't have it turned on.  I'm not sure why that is.  I'll check with Rick, and unless he has a good reason for not wanting search turned on, I'll be happy to turn it on immediately.

Search for the main site is not so simple, because our current database is not designed for it.  Our new database, whose development is well underway, will definitely have a powerful search function.  It has been high on my wish list for a long time.

I was just curious how do you get these ads on to your site, because I have a website I am trying to expand.

On similar note I have sent emails to your marketing department, which get unanswered, about advertising on your site as well. But no one ever responds. As for the links they dont bother me much except on the forums because sometimes when I am talking about mario Bros the links think I am talking about Mario Golf or something else. Anyways I just wanted to share my thoughts and if anyone there can answer my questions about advertising on your site please PM me or send me an email.

You're probably just not talking to the right person.  Unfortunately, I don't know who the right person is, so I can't help.  Jonny's probably your best bet.

Regarding the forum search feature: I tried turning it on, and now I realize why we didn't already have it enabled.  It requires a patch directly into the main site database, which isn't structured for searches, as you all know.  We should be able to turn on forum searching once the main site has its own search feature, which may happen sooner than you think!

Then turn off IntelliTXT.  It's not rocket science.

Well to be honest it was never this bad until today, I was trying to help the sites revenue by leaving them on. Just today though it would intellitext every word in a link and i would get an ad instead of the link I was tryin to follow.

But now they are disabled, it was getting in my way.

My IntelliTXT seems to have come back.

When I try to disable it the page reloads, but it's still there.  Anyone else having this problem, or is it just me?  I'm not doing anything differently.

Same for me, has been ever since the first time they dissapeared for the first time until I re-opened the browser. I can't get rid of them, I just decided to quit complaining since I figured i was the only one...

Add this line to your hosts file:
127.0.0.1   *.intellitxt.com

If that doesn't work, try:

Of course I know what that means, but perhaps you'd like to clarify for those less knowledgeable than ourselves.
