Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2....
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:42:54 PM »
...oh how I longed for the postman to deliver you to the open, waiting, salivating mouth of my Gamecube. Everyday I phoned home from work to see if you had appeared. Then you came into my life.....

and the mists of anticipation evaporated quicker than pseudo-friends when the coke's finished. With a frame-rate choppier than an epileptic lumberjack and cars that sound like a wasp trapped in a cookie jar, you let me down further than when my brother told me there was no Santa Clause. And the handling? Don't even mention the handling. I've driven some quality cars in my life, but never any that can't decide if they're trying to be a shopping cart or a kids toy with wheels of treacle.

Very, Very poor effort.

Need for Speed Underground 2, which is kinda okay, R:Racing, which I'm getting into and Auto Modellista, which I can't take seriously. I just can't respect those cell-shaded visuals. I'm still looking.

I really want to get Burnout 2 after playing Burnout Revenge on the 360.  Did Burnout 2 have Takedowns and Crash mode?

Yes to Crash, no to Takedown (I don't know what this is, though, having never played the later versions)..

I've just bought NFS: Most Wanted. It can only be an improvement over Hot Pursuit. Can't it????

Off topic, but speaking of racing games, I just tried PGR 3 on the Xbox 360. Wow, that was unpleasant..

Good God, man. Are you mad? Thousands of man-hours of development time went into making the PGR (and MSR on Dreamcast) series one of the most realistic racers on the market. And you come along and dismiss it with a throw-away comment in a single breath just because it's not made by Nintendo. Have a bit of respect, will you?

Hey now, I didn't say it was bad, I said it was unpleasant.

Here's what I personally did not enjoy about it:

The track seemed plain
The cars moved slow
The menu system/garage seemed like to me

Now keep in mind, I am not a big racing fan. I didn't like Fzero GX either.

I like Mario Kart and Burnout. and Rad Racer.

edit: dang it, Super needs to get Boomnizzle back running. anyone else host that  emoticon?

MSR isn't really realistic, the physics in that game sucked....

It was a landmark title for the Dreamcast at the time, with (almost) photo-realistic graphics. This remains a fact regardless of anyone's personal opinion of it. (or however much you close ranks in defence of the fanboys).
I personally, didn't like it - I like track-based racers and preferred Ferarri F355 Challenge, but that's neither here nor there regarding the significance of the game. And, like its younger offspring - the PGR series, significant it was.

honestly, a game can't be considered "realistic" just because it has pretty graphics
MSR was a landmark DC game, no doubt, but it's bad physics (or lack thereof) shot down any kind of realism the game might've had......the cars never even got off the floor....

Vanishing Point was more realistic to me....even with it's slippery controls....

Good call on VP.

Switch off the signals that identified the other contestants and bear with the huge laptimes and you have a pretty decent DC racer. IMO Test Drive: Le Mans 24HR was the benchmark DC racer. I don't know if you guys got that game on your side of the pond, but that and Ferarri were my favourite racing games for the Sega lump.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm still waing for NFS: Most Wanted. Any of you guys played it on GC?

No...problem is with all those sequels, the NFS series just doesn't make it in to my collection.  When a game gets sequels like that, I just keep thinking "there'll be a better one next year".  Having said that, Most Wanted sounds kind of cool, I like that it throws chases back in the mix, since that seems to be Need for Speed's trademark.

You know, I played Hot Pursuit 2 a lot on Xbox, and I thought it was pretty fun, but it sounds like maybe the GC version isn't as good.  Or I just didn't mind the problems.  Honestly though, it sounds like you're looking for a simulation racer, and PS2 and Xbox are both far better for that, I think.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Got Most Wanted today. 1st impressions are that it's NFS Underground 2, but in daytime. At least the handling is miles better than Hot Pursuit 2.

Do you think NFS Carbon is going to be any good? The article I read in gameinformer makes it sound like it focuses a lot on your team members and how they influence the racing.

I think it'll sell by the bucket-load, like all the EA sequels. It will look good, play okay-ish and ultimately be uninspired and insipid, shallow, bargain-bin fodder.
And we'll love it...

I really like NFS Most Wanted.  But when the game crashes whenever I'm in a really long pursuit (15+ minutes) with multiple milestones acheived it kinda drops the purchase desire down more eachtime.

Yet car crashes are very tolerable, to the point of being delightful.

I felt the same way CouchMonkey, NFS : HP2 was probably one of my favorite racing games on my Xbox untill Burnout 3 came out. I guess the GC version had some major problems that the Xbox didn't suffer from.
