I'd rather have Joan Allen's character in "The Candidate" as a role model for my (hypothetical) daughters.

But I do think I see what you're saying. The world may not be ready for the whole deal, (for example, is Hillary electable?) and everything's a work in progress. Baby steps, after all.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

The fact that Chile's president is a woman shows that the world is finally progressing

The Philippines has had a woman's president before... that doesn't mean that they're at all progressive...

Eh, I like to pick on the Philippines because my mom's poisoned me against my country of birth.

YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME.

I was born there too.

~~~~~
Not sure how progressive at all Tomb Raider is considering the big boobs and short shorts are the marketing weapons.  Then there's the tarnished franchise on the side.
Incidentally, my Mom's a Filipino, it's just that she was a social studies teacher there, so she can tell me all about all sorts of problems that I never got to experience for myself. The end result of this is that I consider myself lucky: I grew up in Canada!
I don't think Lara's influence on women in videogames is black and white.  She's obviously partially responsible for the T&A approach we see for most videogame women, but would things really be that different if she didn't exist?  From Kasumi to April O'Neil, Wonder Woman to The Dark Queen: as long as guys are out there designing female characters, they'll have fantasy-perfect bodies.
And if Lara had never existed, would Johanna Dark or Jade (Beyond Good and Evil) exist?  Ignoring Johanna's latest adventure, those two portray believable, if still rather ideally-proprotioned, figures and they wear pretty modest clothing.
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX
Does Samus wear anything underneath the Zero Suit?
I demand a no-suit version of Samus.
I think it would be a pointless venture to give Johanna or Lara poor posture, a spare tyre or flat feet. The very essence of gaming for me, is escapism and unreality (incidently, that's why I don't like war games), a fantastical look at alternative worlds where nothing is real and things can be just so. Eye candy in games need not be a bad or sexist thing. Are not most of the heroes in games handsome, rugged and perfectly formed?
Yeah, that Mario, he sure is a dreamer huh? Big puffy mustache, rotund pregnant man-belly, and oh-so-short!
the point was that Chile's society is extremely chauvinist, so the fact that a woman (and divorced 2 times, currently single) gets elected by the majority of the population is saying something....
Kairon: Compare Mario to a real fat italian plumber and you'll agree. Even if he's fat he's athletic, strong and has a perfectly cared-for moustache.
That talk about Tomb Raider once possibly appearing on an N64 reminds me of an N64 game I saw in Nintendo Power that as far as I know was never released.
It was slated to come out in 2000, or somewhere late (or in the latter half) of the N64's "lifespan".  It looked like a third-person adventure game much like Tomb Raider and also featured an adventurous female character, not unlike Lara Croft, who wielded two guns.  I think she wore green, including a green baseball cap.  Or some kind of hat.
The name "Riqa" popped into my head just now as I was writing this.  If it wasn't called that, it was something similarly exotic at least.  I wonder if that game was any good, and if it actually was released or exists in some form?  (EDIT: According to Wikipedia's list of cancelled video games, "Riqa" became the current-gen game "Rogue Ops".  That game did star a woman who had guns...I haven't played Rogue Ops, but it looks different from how I recall the N64 Riqa did...ah well, never mind then!)
As for Tomb Raider on a Nintendo console, can't the Game Boy Player play GBC games as well, including the GBC game Tomb Raider: Curse Of The Sword?  Okay, it's not a true console game, but still...
I played (Lara Croft -) Tomb Raider: Legend on the PC.  First Tomb Raider game I seriously got into.  I thought she was overrated and not that good-looking (at least the face) but after the series got a reboot with Legend, and Lara herself redesigned, and seeing that it played much like the recent Prince Of Persia games, I gave it a shot and I love it.  Now that I have a new computer, I may try it with "Next Generation content" enabled and get the remaining artifact things.
Not really sure what the point of releasing it on the GameCube is.  I mean, the GameCube does need more games, but I've already played this one.  They really should've tried to make it simultaneous with all the other console (and PC) releases.  If it means more support for Nintendo from Eidos or Crystal Dynamics or whoever, I guess that's good.
