I heard EA are clearing a space in the desert to bury 10 million copies of 'Generic Racer 17' just in case...

I'd worry that a 'one console future' descended us all into drudgery, mediocrity and a global 'Playstation-esque' flood of empty, meaningless and worthless games. I truly believe that having only one console would bring forward the date, by leaps and bounds, of the second Great Videogames Crash that we all know is going to happen.

I'm fully aware that this seems to contradict my earlier post, but I was originally berating the zealots, of which I was one, who would dismiss out of hand any machine other than the one they'd pleged alegiance to. Christ, I missed out on the best version of Streetfighter 2 on the Snes because I was a Megadrive (Genesis) fan. How stupid do you think I feel now? LOL.

One of my elderly relatives put it in perpsective for me one time. He came home and asked me if I'd be buying the game that he saw advertised on tv at his place of work and I said 'not a chance'. The game in question was Ridge-Racer on PS1 and after trying for a half hour to explain to him that, although it looked good and played well in the arcade, I wouldn't be buying it because I refused to have a PS1. My uncle thought this was ludicrous and asked me if I would do the same if a film I was dying to see would only play on a certain brand of dvd-player - would I just do without seeing the film? Would I hell..

I would say that the portrayal and promotion of strong, independant women, in any media is a good thing. And does far more for feminism than the painfully thin, coke-snorting horrors that are 'supermodels' ever could. Who would you rather have your daughters aspire to be? Lara Croft or Kate 'no-septum' Moss?

Do we all still suffer from it in 2006? I used to be such a Zealot, back in the day. As far back as the days of Atari STs versus Amigas, (ask your dad...) through Megadrive versus Snes, I was sometimes physically opposed to the counterpart to the machine I owned. more than once I ended up in a fist-fight in the playground (and once in a nightclub, FFS!) over 'which machine was better'. Latterly, I missed out on so many amazing games because I chose to have a Dreamcast over the PS2, talk about limited choice, but I never forgave Sony for the demise of the Saturn.

For the last few years, I've tried to redress that balance by buying all the machines and consoles I refused to have due to my own blinkered, narrow-minded stupidity. Now, 18 machines and 3000-odd games later I reckon I've satisfied my lust for past games and come to the conclusion that brand-loyalty is for losers and zealots. Surely it's the games that are important, not the machine?

What's still to come out for the Cube this year? How many titles are we to expect before Nintendo put the Cube out to pasture?

I think it's possible to read too much into the whole situation. The Lara Croft character is simply a woman who can look after herself and doesn't stand for any nonsense from anyone. Those traits are admirable in anyone, regardless of genre. Whatever the argument is, I for one am rejoicing in the fact that TR:Legends is being released for the Gamecube.

As for the Tank-Girl thing: TG's far too random and arty-farty to be taken seriously, IMO

cheers

So what, if any, EA racers came out in the US that we didn't get in the UK? I know of the Nascar games and Auto Modellista (which I have but can't take seriosly). Are there any more. Did you lot get any Champ car stuff for instance?

IMO, a lack of 'proper' racers killed the Dreamcast. All us DC fans had to contend with was the shoddy Sega Gt, which handled like a broken dog with backward facing legs. We also had the Subliminal Le Mans 24 HR, but that was harder to find than rocking horse poo. I, myself, was quite bitter sitting watching all the spoilt-brat PS2 owners with their plethora of Gran Tourismo clones to play.

Is the Nascar series any good on the Cube? I'm UK-based, but I do own a Freeloder disk.

Thanks

While I'm not going to complain about this games surprise port to Gamecube, it still belongs on Xbox with it's fat sweaty nerds.

Lara Croft has done more to raise the profile of the free-thinking independant women's movement than any other single entity since the suffragettes. To call the TR series sexist is, fankly, absurd. Maybe you would prefer women to 'know their place' , stay in the kitchen with the kids and leave all that nasty adventuring to the menfolks.

The game itself is good, I have it on PC and PSP, and I look forward to buying it for my 'cube.

What Nintendo magazines do you lot have in your respective countries?

Here in the UK we had, up until recently, 3 magazines - 1 official and two (better, IMO) unofficial.

N.O.M - Nintendo Official Magazine

CUBE - now deceased

N.G.C - temporarily stoppped and soon to be re-launched, in July, as NGamer.

What you got guys, and which do you like? Do you even bother with mags now we're all on superfast connections?

Or do you, like me, prefer to have the solid, reassuring glossy paper in your hands?

Hi all, I've just returned to regular gaming after spending years building up a massive retro collection, then selling it all off and starting again. I've just gotten myself a 'Cube and a few games and thought I'd find me a decent forum to chat all things gaming again.  I seem to be searching in vain for any kind of decent track-based racer, though. I've got myself a copy of R:Racing Evolution on import (thanks Freeloader) but it's kind of lacking in the excitement area, tbh.

Can anyone advise me on the state of play regarding GC racing games, please.

*thinks - I've been away too long....*

Cheers
