Nintendo Gaming / Are memory cards needed? I'm new to GC!
« on: April 26, 2003, 03:43:35 PM »
Yes.  I recommend getting a memory card 251.  And since you're new, you might not know about the Wavebird wireless controller, which I also highly recommend, despite having to pay for batteries.

Nintendo Gaming / we want bonus discs!
« on: April 25, 2003, 10:50:04 AM »
Maybe not full games or as a full other disc with it's own case and all (included on game you're buying), but I'd like to see more movies and maybe even demos included on games,

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart Screens !! Exclusive !!! 100% Genuine !
« on: April 23, 2003, 06:11:06 AM »
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the graphics as of now.  Look at the Pikmin 2 graphics, obviously they're going to be better (because the original look much better).

Nintendo Gaming / Another Zelda in development?
« on: April 20, 2003, 10:03:17 AM »
If they do I'd like to see them make some improvements to the graphics (which I find are a little overrated).  A little more variety in the environments, less blurry textures, clear water (like against the final boss), much more polished water (quite a few things to do with that) and probably a few other little things.  I mean, the graphics are great but there are quite a few very obvious flaws.

Something a little more innovative than WW was too.  Of course, I'd rather see a brand new game than another Zelda.  1 game in each major franchise each gen I say.

personally, i think nintendo WANTS to be kiddy

Not so much kiddy as for everyone.  They want to make games that will be good for kids, teens, adults, everyone.  So instead of making games that appeal to a certain audience, why not just make one about the game?  Quote magazines and websites who reviewed it, give scores, stuff like that.

I'd like to see only 1 Mario, Zelda, Metroid or Pokemon game a generation.  No more spinoffs either unless they'll use the license well (like SSBM).  I never played much of Luigi's Mansion, but did the Mario universe really play a major role in the game?  I'd like to see them stop relying on the license for it sell and start relying on it being a good game.  And if they advertise it as a good game and give proof (like I said before), I'm betting it will sell well.

No, because they don't seem to care.  Look at the commercial for Zelda.  Was there any attempt at trying to explain the cel-shaded look?  Any attempt to try and ake it look appealing?  No, they tried to sell it on the Zelda name.  And if people associate Zelda with Nintendo and Nintendo with kiddy, they're not changing anything.  The way I see it, they took a risk with Zelda and then tried to cover it up. The Mario and Animal Crossing commercials were just plain stupid.  What are they thinking?  Now, they probably do know more about it than me, but I'm not one to complain often.  Metroid Prime sold some 250 000 copies it's first week, and then dropped off.  Why?  Because it was competing with Splinter Cell and Vice City, and it's commerical didn't show the one thing it had over those games.  It was the better game.  It's not like no one does it, I say start making commericals that show how good the games are, not the crap they're putting out now.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo lowers profit expectations... again

Could this be because of more marketing or trying to atrract 3rd parties?

Coop would be cool but not in old franchises like Mario, Zelda or Metroid, why?, because there can only be ONE Hero in these games.

Mario has Luigi.  Wind Waker has puzzles where you control a second player (but one with far less abilities).  Metroid, maybe not.  The puzzles in WW with 2 players are it's best!  It can be done (well, with mario and Zelda and least) without ruining anything.  And it's fun, so why not?

I'd like to see a race mode in the next Mario (racing to the objective, not Mario Kart or anything).  I'd also like to see some kind of co-op platforming where people have to hit switches for each other, or sychronize their jumps or something like that.

In Zelda, I'd just like them to keep up the 2 player puzzles.  I hear four swords is great, maybe include something like that.

Metroid is tough, because of the HUD.  System link may solve that.  Having enemies that require players to co-operate (rather than simply having the enemy be harder to compensate for double the firepower) would be cool.

Nintendo Gaming / How is Enter The Matrix going?
« on: April 06, 2003, 09:07:21 AM »
I'm not trying to say owning all 3 consoles suddenly makes you harcore, I'm sorry if it sounded like that.  I'm just saying that if you have the money, I think everyone would want all 3 consoles so they could get all the great games that generation.  It just made me wonder how big about gaming they were if they had the money, but didn't bother getting all 3.

so to be hard core you have to now own all 3 of the current systems?

And I ways thought it meant that you spent all your saved money on games and all your extra time on them as well, either playing or wasting your time on a game forum on the world wide web?

what if you spend 1000 on games, or 2000, or what is the official amount you spend cash and time wise to be considered that hard core geek your referring to? lol

Q]

Yes, I'd say you need to own all 3 consoles.  Who doesn't want to have all 3?  It's the best, you get the biggest library of games.  I just found it a little odd that they have the money (I assume) to own all 3, but don't.

I heard (in EGM I believe) it would be 2 discs long.

I'm not expecting much from it.  The Wachowski brothers may be excellent directors but I have lttle faith in them as gamers since they don't even own a GC.  Somehow I doubt they're very hardcore gamers if they don't own all 3 consoles.  They game will be great as a part in the Matrix, but I doubt it will be as a game.

I would absolutely love it.  Some of my fondest gaming memories are playing coop (Secret of Mana).  Mario would work great, either counterop or coop (platform/puzzle goals I think would be fun as long as both were hard).  Metroid, I say screw atmosphere I want to play with a friend.  Of course, all of them would have to be specifically designed for playing with a friend.  I hope FF:CC is good for coop.

Nintendo Gaming / SSB3!! IS IT IN THE WORKS?
« on: March 27, 2003, 01:40:14 PM »
Of course it is, SSBM sold tons.  I see no reason why Nintendo would choose to wait until it's next console for a new game.  Nintendo have said themselves they want to shorten the time between games, and there are tons of things they could do with the series with the whole Nintendo universe to work with.

Nintendo Gaming / New to The Cube...
« on: March 24, 2003, 03:06:04 PM »
Try Pikmin, it's an awesome game.  Some people said it was too short and while I would've liked to see it be a little longer, I still found it pretty long and challenging.  I found myself retrying the last world over and over and over (but I did completely beat the game the first time through).  It's very unique and I could go on for quite a while about how great it is, but I won't.  You should definitely give it at least a rent though.

Nintendo Gaming / WARNING: Do NOT open the newest Nintendo Newsletter!
« on: March 24, 2003, 02:59:06 PM »
I didn't read the newsletter, but I have been reading about it a lot and now I'm a little dissapointed I know so much.  I wish I had been completely in the dark about it until I got to play.  Well, maybe next time.  I'm sure the game will still be great

Nintendo Gaming / Penny-Arcade: Gabes take on Wind Waker
« on: March 24, 2003, 10:01:28 AM »
Don't forget Gabe and Tycho have to handle advertising and the mercandise too. I think I read during the CTS strips that each strip takes about 6 hours.

Nintendo Gaming / EGM rate Zelda!!!
« on: March 18, 2003, 01:50:51 PM »
I find it hilarious how people will say EGM is so biased, when the editorial this month was on that subject exactly.  They've had advertisments pulled because of lousy reviews.

I like soccer a lot, and can appreciate a game that replicates the sport well (which is why I wish Winning Eleven 6 would come to NA).  But other sports (and by other sports I mean hockey), I can appreciate the sport but I also just like rooting for my team.  It's an exciting sport to watch and it's fun seeing your team play at home and come from behind to win (or something like that).  I doubt I'd get that from a sports game.

Nintendo Gaming / Worldwide Million Sellers
« on: March 18, 2003, 12:56:29 PM »
I doubt that MP has sold over a million uet.  It sold 250 000 it's first week and was competitive with Splinter Cell in Novemeber, but fell pretty far behind in December.  And ever since then I'm fairly sure GC games have done crappy in NA.  It hasn't been out in Japan too long, but only sold around 40 000 when it launched.  Of course, it's just an estimate, but it's based off of numbers I've seen from various sources.

I might make a topic about SMS later.  But it really is a different topic.

Are you BLIND? SMS was built from the ground up with the water gun in mind- it wasn't an idea they "slapped" Mario onto- get that out of your head. And how was the presentation sloppy? SMS was one of the BEST platformers I've ever played- maybe not the best Mario game but MUCH better than 99% of games out there. It's easily one of the funnest games I've ever played. How was it sloppy?

I'm not saying it was a bad platformer, it was tons of fun.  I said the PRESENTATION was sloppy, and that if it hadn't been Mario it might've opened up new gameplay possibilities.  For example, if it hadn't been Mario the water-pack may have been used in better ways (I would've liked to see the water shooting out of the hover-pack expansion play a role, and the Yoshi thing seemed very forced).  I'm sorry for the way I phrased it, I know it was always intended to be a Mario game.  I simply meant the Mario name wasn't needed.  I could go much deeper into things I would've liked to see changed, but that's another topic.  My point is I think the game would've worked better with new characters.

I have no problem with sticking to old franchises to make a game sell, as long as the gameplay remains completely unaffected.

Nintendo Gaming / Sigh, some biassed Nintendo Bashing!
« on: March 17, 2003, 10:04:02 AM »
I don't agree with all the MS bashing going on here.  MS have done some great (and new) things, like the harddrive and Xboxlive.  Blinx was a good idea, bad execution.  Halo introduced the 2 weapon system, didn't it?

I've been thinking a little about the sequels thing while reading this topic.  I think it's easy to be frustrated with Nintendo for using the Pokemon and Mario licenses so much.  The License Revoked editorial here are PGC was great.  I believe somewhere in the article they talked about licenses or franchises taking the pressure off the developer to make a really great game.  And Nintendo does do that.  Super Mario Sunshine should've been a brand new game.  The presentation was sloppy and the idea of using water could probably have been expanded much further had it been an original character.  But Mario would sell, so they slapped Mario in there (much like they put Star Fox into Dinosaur Planet).  Mario Tennis and Golf are also like this (I don't include Kart or Party since I haven't played much of those series).  Do the Mario characters really add that much to the gameplay?  No, I don't believe so (SSBM on the other hand, I find uses the licenses very well).  Of course, those games don't need to have much of a presentaion anyways, so it's not so bad.  Really, what I'm trying to say is Nintendo do sometimes hide behind their franchises.  Put a little more money into getting the word out on games (and their actual gameplay!). But that's another topic.
