General Chat / Faceball 2000 Part 3: Faceball 2024 in Milwaukee
« on: March 12, 2024, 04:26:21 PM »
Hello NWR friends!

I've posted a bit about this before, and I don't want to go into the weeds with too many details now, as there's a lot to take in *and*.... Stop Skeletons From Fighting is doing a Youtube Documentary on this entire project!  It will be amazing!

Anywhoo, why I'm posting now... it's officially official.

The first weekend in April, myself and some of the gang will be in Milwaukee for the Midwest Gaming Classic expo and we will have an exhibit set up for 16 player Faceball 2000 DX on 16 TVs via GameCubes and 16 Game Boy Players.

What is Faceball 2000 DX?  Well... long story short - the original Faceball 2000 doesn't support 16 players after-all.  It only supports 15 players!  What a rip-off, after all these years, eh?  Long story short, there's a bug in the code that prevents a 16-player game from loading.  Someone in my crew figured this out and patched it.  And then, added in a color patch that's been floating around that also takes advantage of the Game Boy Color's faster processor to speed up gameplay (but also, the original,  4-shades-of-gray version is patched as well, so that can be played too!).

It's amazing and fun and just insanity and if anyone wants to swing by and say hi, please do! :)

I am surprised they're that much, really.  I can't imagine there's many people using them for their intended purpose and the unintended purpose of hacking is much easier through other methods.  Of course, it's Nintendo and it's a semi-rare piece of equipment... but still. I'm just salty. 🤣

May I bump this thread to express my annoyance with the fact that Broadband Adapters got stupid expensive before I got my set of eight. :(

I just need two more. :(

>originally the game was assigned an 18+ rating, but following discussions with the authority (not named but presumably PEGI) were able to confirm a 3+ rating.

That's backwards.  The game was 3+ and was changed to 18+ due to simulated gambling.  Which is ridiculous.  Meanwhile, gacha games with actual gambling in them are a-okay.

Actually... I take back my answer.

Thanos was wearing the Gauntlet with the stones.  Everyone who was dusted took everything they were wearing with them.  Clothes.  Fury's eye patch.  Bucky's arm.  It all went.

...if Thanos had been blipped, would the stones had gone with him?

7
That's easy.  Thanos turns to dust with the rest of the other half, someone walks over, picks up the gems and resets everything minus Thanos.

Okay, so I finally watched The Marvels.  For reference, I've seen everything aside from Echo.

I enjoyed it.  It was a complete and total mess when it came to pacing and plot progression, and the entire Monica/Carol conflict was pointless (Monica being upset with Carol wasn't well explored and seemed kinda out of left field - but if they wanted to really amp it up, having Monica's disappointment with Carol lead to het puling Kamala aside and warning her about putting too much faith in her could have been a nice touch that lead somewhere.) - but the movie was fun.  Even having followed everything, I agree that it seemed like jumping into the middle of a comic book story line.  As much as I loved Kamala's family - they should have been cut, drastically*, and the main storyline should have been given more focus.  The entire 'evacuate the station' plot should have been cut.  And that song and dance number (if you haven't seen the movie yet, I'm not kidding)... yeesh.

All my complaints aside, it was still a fun movie - but yes, Marvel has completely lost focus at this point.

*Re: the fam - cut about 90% of that stuff out, enough to know they're involved, but enough to give significant time back to the movie.  Then, take all their misadventures in space and cut it to a Disney+ special.  Not something casual viewers *have* to watch, but they'd be far more inclined to enjoy.   Pitch Meeting said it best (paraphrasing)

"And Kamala's family is there."

"Why are they there?"

"Because I like them.  They're funny."

Plz buy this so Hotel Dusk/Last Window get released. :D

It doesn't make sense anymore.  And as we move further away from physical media (sadface), it'll make even less sense.  E3 was basically for retailers and such - and they're not going to be selling the games anymore.

Even things like PAX don't make much sense (from the Developer/Publisher side of things).  Why invest all the time and money to travel/rent space/staff/and set up demos that only a limited amount of people can play when you can upload Youtube videos yourself and free demos that everyone can play?

In a time where if you wanted folks to play a demo of Ocarina of Time, you needed special hardware and had limited ways to distribute the software, it makes sense.  Today?  meh.

I see one of two options going forward.  One, we go back to CES (is CES still a thing?  I dunno) where it's general consumer electronics.  Put the Nintendo next to the refrigerator with WiFi cameras installed.  Not really a good format, but more likley to survive.  Or, a total gaming expo.  Like PAXxGenCon - Table Top, RPG, Card Games, and Video Games.  Tournaments, vendors, devs and publishers...

But something only for Devs and Pubs direct to Industry Resellers?  Naw, it's dead dog.

General Chat / Any Bone fans?
« on: October 20, 2023, 08:07:41 PM »
I swear we had a good conversation years ago about Jeff Smith's Bone comic.

Anywhoo, if you're a fan, imma gonna spam his newest kickstarter.

He's already shredded the goal, so I'm not desperately trying to recruit others ... :D

In fairness, I think if that was the case, they underestimated the backlash to the plan and I think a lot of devs are looking at options just because they don't trust Unity.

The more I dwell on it, the more confident I am about The Good Place at #1. It's a nearly perfect show that stumbles a little right before the end then completely sticks the landing when it matters.

A fellow human of culture and taste.  I tip my hat to you.

18
Honestly, I'm shocked it was just a note in the entry of another show that was good, but no where near TGP's quality of every freaking plotpoint in every single episode.

It might be my top live action show ever.

19
I'm sorry, but while I appreciate a list that puts Better Call Saul above Breaking Bad (god damn, that spin off is so good), I just can't take a list missing The Good Place seriously. 🤣

In no particular order, I'd have to say my top shows would include Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, The Good Place, Avatar: TLA, all of Adventure Time (though Fionna and Cake, which was freaking amazing), and Infinity Train (which I didn't even know existed two weeks ago).

The original list seems light on animation, which is a shame because there's some great animated content out there.

So, like...

Infinity Train.

Go watch it.  Now.

21
eh.  If Microsoft runs the studios into the ground, the talent will leave.

It's not like Activision is using 99% of their IPs anyway.

22
The thing that makes this email bad us Microsoft's history - especially Nokia - combined with them having an "inside man" gobbling up Nintendo stock on the sly.

23
I can pretty much guarantee that if there was every any chance of Microsoft buying Nintendo (of which there was not), now that these emails have leaked, it will never happen.  To the point where this probably soured all good will Microsoft had seemingly built with Nintendo (Goldeneye, for example).  In fact, Phil's inside man Morfit is likely to wake up tomorrow with a severed horse head in his bed and quickly sell off all Nintendo shares he has acquired.

24
I'd rather a DK'94 remake.

This game was fun, but the Lemmings-esque gameplay has worn out its welcome in the past 20-years.
