Fire Emblem Fates stays up top in an uneventful week of releases.
As someone who also watches a lot of anime, I can't say anime typically fares much better, especially as the industry has veered increasingly towards moe & otaku pandering. Stereotypes & 1D characters abound. You get your quality shows from time to time, but I've found the shows released in the last 5 years to be substantially inferior to those produced in the 2000s & 1990s. But this is, of course, a discussion for another thread.
I second that, having watched a lot of anime myself. I'm speaking from personal experience in terms of more popular and contemporary shows.
Reading back, I shouldn't have singled out video game writing when I meant writing in general.
I believe that Sturgeon's Revelation applies to anime evenly over the years. The trends may change and might not be to your tastes, but the quality has remained consistent. Granted, you might have to deal outside your wheel house to find that quality.
I disagree with the statement that shows from the 90s and 00s, but I have little to back up my disagreement as my experience with shows from the respective decades is spotty. Also, I heavily associate the mid-00s as the deepest point of the moe hell hole. Granted, we traded blatant moe girls shows with adaptions of questionable light novels with moe girls, but at least the light novels try to tell some sort of serialized story (this is what I tell myself at night).
To accurately argue my disagreement would probably mean dueling lists of TV shows, OVAs, and movies, and that sounds fucking unbearable. For me, I have watched quite a few shows that I love or really enjoy in the 2010s so far, so that's my emotional truth. Then again, I have indulged heavily in what could be considered the most popular, pandering, and male-otaku oriented franchises. I could be part of the problem.
