I just found this review i had wrote awhile back. I think i submitted it when i applied for a staff position.

I think its a decent review. Better then most of my others.

Super Mario Galaxy

The Wii Game that Could….

Yes it is true that as of now anyone that has fully experienced Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii understands that it is one of the greatest Mario adventure games of all time. Although Mario 64 can be argued to be equal or better, it is still a great collection to own for show or enjoyment. It has been clearly marked one of the top 10 games of 2007. If it is number one we will know, because of all of the different opinions on the web and television. Nevertheless it is still a landmark in the Wii’s history, which is why it has gotten so much hype. Now not to spoil too much lets move on.

Super Mario Galaxy contains a simple control setup which can be learned very quickly, when first picking up the game myself I learned the controls within the first minute, without reading any manuals, or tutorials. Motion controls are limited, but are not very necessary. Pointing for collecting star bits, and a swish of your wrist for spin attacks, are all that are included. The rest of the controls are mapped to a select few buttons on the controller. The only problem with the controls which seems obvious is the awkwardness. Sometimes on smaller planets or even larger ones the controls don’t feel right, usually awkward and confusing.. These few times this happened I found myself heading in the wrong direction. Despite these minor flaws the controls are one of the many wonders in the game.

One of the new features included in the game is the ability to play with two players, and it is not some kind of cheesy race included in most of Nintendo’s multiplayer games. It is simply a co-op mode in the game. The second player can assist in collecting star bits with the pointing function. Aside from collecting the second player can also make Mario jump and stop enemies in their tracks. This feature with enemy’s can help in many situations. You can stop incoming bullet bills which could lead to you losing your health, and resulting in the loss of a life.

The comets in the game that hover around the planets add a new interesting aspect to the Mario franchise. They vary in difficulty from to simple to overly challenging. The comets that prove to be more difficult are always the ones that are more exciting, especially the 100 purple coins comets. In these you must collect 100 purple coins, and if you lose all of your health, even if you are at 99 coins, you must start the entire process over again. In with the comets comes one of the very few bad aspects of the game. Towards the end of the game the comets begin to get very tiresome as there are 2-3 comets per galaxy. Sometimes you must wait for one to appear before you can move on to your next challenge, and some can be very time consuming. Other than that they were a great addition to the game.

One of the other wonderful marvels in the game is music and sounds. Although hearing Mario’s voice in more of a word form is not very pleasing, the wahoo’s he gives off are still just as enthusiastic, but aside from Mario’s voice the planets background music are simply astonishing. When first flying into the Good Egg Galaxy I was amazed at how well the piece was put together and worked in a Mario game. Planets that had a more dim sound to the like the Spooky galaxy also had a very pleasing soundtrack; although eerie. The game also brought back some of the retro sounds from the Mario games of the past. All of this put together made for a wonderful soundtrack.

One of the other portions of the game that have a flaw are the power-ups. It was nice of Nintendo to bring back the fire Mario that we have all come to know and love in the early games of Nintendo, but they all come with flaws. For one all of the power-ups have a time limit on them making their experience less exciting. Another problem would be the controls, they make it very difficult to aim when shooting a fireball and spring Mario moves slowly and more unpredictable. After some practice you can learn how to use each of these somewhat well but they take time and effort to do so.

Overall this game has been another masterpiece that Nintendo can hang onto their wall or game art. But this game leaves all of us a huge question, where will Mario go next. Now that he has been in space there’s not much more for him to do. Whatever direction Nintendo takes their main star hopefully they touch up the miniscule flaws found in Mario Galaxy to make it a perfect game in all aspects.

Pro’s                                              Con’s

+ Graphics look amazing              - Comets become time consuming and tiresome
+ Amazing Soundtrack                 - Control becomes awkward in some spots.
+ Fun gameplay                             - Miner flaws in the Power-up designs.
+ Comets add new aspect to
    the Mario Series

Graphics – 10
The graphics in Super Mario Galaxy are absolutely the best we have seen on any Wii game so far; so amazing that I would call them jaw-dropping. The visuals while flying between planets are one of the best parts that they touched upon.

Sound – 10
As I said earlier in the review simply amazing, there is not much more they could have done to perfect the sound further.
Control – 9.0
Control is adequate, some minor flaws but good. Everything we would expect from Nintendo here.

Gameplay – 9.5
New intuitive design, with new aspects making gameplay more challenging and exciting for players old and new to the series.

Lastability – 9.5
There isn’t much more they could have put into this game that would make it last longer. You can get bored with it after some time, but you will be addicted until the first play through is complete.

Final – 9.5
One of the Best Wii games the we have seen so far on the Wii. Hopefully Nintendo will continue this trend producing even better Mario sequels.

Reader Reviews / Brain Age 2 Review
« on: October 30, 2007, 02:05:15 PM »
This is what i used for my Staff news writer review.

Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day.
Same Old Game, Little Variation, Have Fun…

Doctor Ryuta Kawashima returns for another Brain Age game in a vein attempt to teach the youth of America. Yes it may help some learn a thing or two about the piano but nothing to much. The game consists of training games which are explained by none other than Dr. Kawashima. All of it make for an enjoyable experience but nothing too spectacular.

You begin the game taking your Brain Age for the very first time, this is one of many things that you are supposed to do daily. The lowest age you can get is 20 years, but you most likely will not score to close to that for some time. After completing you Brain Age you can take part in some brain training games. At this point in the game only 3 are available, eventually you will obtain 11 games in all. Which include Piano Player, Change Maker, Math Recall and many more. And of course like in the original Brain Age you get a stamp for each day you partake in a Training game. The more stamps you have the more games you can unlock.

For collecting stamps you also unlock other options in the game, which add changes to the training games or unlock other options. An example of an option is the ability to design you own stamp. You choose which form you would like to use and you draw using of course the stylus. If you don’t like what you drew you can always reset it to the default, which is a circle branded with the letters OK. AS for more options in the training games you can get things like the ability to choose your own song to play in Piano Player. This is of course after you have played the daily song which is pre-selected for you.

One of the other big parts of the game is the up and rising puzzle game Sudoku. They put much effort into this part of the game because it has its own heading in the main page. You are allowed to choose your own difficulty, which is limited to the basic Easy, Medium and Hard. There are even tutorials if you don’t quite understand how to place the numbers 1-9 in the correct spots. If you have ever played Sudoku you will find this as one of the most addicting parts of the game.

The game is also has a built-in quick-play mode which Dr. Kawashima tells you is for “Introducing the game to family and Friends” Other then this you can use it to quickly play a round of Sudoku or a training game. One of the other aspects of the game which is very nice is its communications section. Every day the good doctor has something for you to do, whether it be identifying a picture that someone else drew while playing the game, or filling in the words to an acrostic. These can sometimes be very enjoyable.

The game also has a built in Single-card play and a Multicard-play. Up to 16 individuals can play together. This mode is nice but it would have even been nicer if Nintendo included a complete Wi-Fi mode, which you could use to play others across the internet.

Score:
Graphics      Sound        Control        Gameplay        Lastability       Final
   8.0                7.5               7.5                  6.0                     5.0                6.5

Pros
+ Games are designed nicely
+ Stylus movements are read nicely
+ Voice recognition is good
+ Sudoku what else can I say
Cons
- Game gets boring after 2-3 weeks of play
- No Wi-Fi mode
- Stylus movements do not always work well.

Graphics – Because this is a simple brain training game the graphics are limited. But for what’s there it is pretty nice. Not many objects are blocky and everything fits together nicely

Sound – Many different tunes are played in this game and especially a lot in the Piano playing game. Heck, even its own song made it into Super Smash Bros. Brawl. But still they aren’t amazing.

Control – Yes the game reads your movements most of the time but it doesn’t all the time. For instance I can write one thing and write the same thing a moment later and two different answers will appear. You also have to do many things in one stroke which is not the way most people write. But overall you get used to how its reads things after some time.

Gameplay – As for gameplay, everything is nice. The training games are simple enough for many people to enjoy, but super high scores are near impossible to obtain. Good luck on getting that Rocket Speed.

Lastability – One of the games worst factors. It gets boring because you do the same exact thing day after day after day. One of the only things that really change is the Piano player music.

Final – I felt it wasn’t a great game but just a recreation of the first game with some added games and features. Nothing spectacular was added, but still was an enjoyable experience.

Reader Reviews / Mario Strikers Charged
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:31:06 PM »
My application review

Nintendo Made An Online Game, Really?

Yes Nintendo made a sequel to Gamecube’s Super Mario Strikers and is it better, I would say so. At first glance it seems like a re-make of the original with a few new tricks, but entirely different gameplay is added when you pick up the Wii-Mote and Nunchuck. Not to mention a full fledged online mode.

Players will find themselves in the middle of a battlefield once that whistle blows beginning the match. Except for scoring in the opposite goal all rules were thrown out. You can hit other players and touch the ball with your hands. If you want you can even eat the ball. There are no fouls or penalty’s it is just you and the other team fighting to win.

Most of the fields in Mario Strikers Charged are surrounded by an electric fence that when touched by a player you are electrocuted, this makes you unable to use that character for a short time. Other fields simply do not have a fence and just empty into nothingness. If your character falls off the stage on one of these fields you will be unable to use that character for an even longer period of time then the electric fence. Most fields also have other interactive things going on. For instance lightening may strike the ball and whoever is kicking it at anytime during play.

One of the additions to the game that made it hugely difficult was a megastrike. During a megastrike you charge up and are able to launch at most six balls at a time towards the opponents’ goal. One of the others is your sidekicks’ special moves. Each sidekick has the ability to charge and launch a powerful kick towards the net. But be careful if you are interrupted during the charging process you will have to try again.

Mario Strikers Charged has a short seeming one player mode, but it is not as short as it may seem. It has only 3 cups but they are very challenging. You choose from one of the 9 available captains (Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, DK, Peach, Daisy, Waluigi, Wario), and also choose three of the 8 partners (Toad, Shyguy, Monty Mole, Drybones, Koopa, Hammer Bros, Boo, and Birdo). I advise that you play the game in multiplayer mode a few times before choosing your 1 person team. In the cups you go through qualifying and elimination rounds before facing the cup’s champion.

Multiplayer mode opens up different ways that you can play. You can set certain rules for how long you play or how many goals you must score to win. Also you are able to pick from a list of stages that you have unlocked.

Challenge mode is just another one player feature giving you more to do. In this mode you play as one of the characters and complete that characters challenge. For Instance as Mario you may be asked to win a match starting two points behind. There is a challenge for every single character.

Mario Strikers Charged also has Nintendo’s first real online game. Although you can use friend codes it is not necessary, you can choose to play a random person internationally. By playing online you earn points which go towards your season score. There are many different ranking pages which you are able to score upon, (Friends only, Daily, Season ranking) to name a few. Each season only lasts a week, so at that time all of your points will be lost, but your win and lose ratio will remain in place.

Score:

Graphics   Sound   Control   Gameplay   Lastability   Final

8.5      8.0          9.0   9.5      9.0      9.0

Why did I give these scores see page 2

Graphics: 8.5
The graphics are by far high quality, they may not be a Metroid or Galaxy but they are definitely better then average. This is one of the first few games that they made look like a Wii game not a Gamecube.

Sound: 8.0
The music doesn’t sound like a classic Mario game so a difference is nice. But like any game music needs to be improved. It felt at certain times that the music was misplayed and it deserved to be in a different area.

Control: 9.0
Control works great with both the Wii-Mote and Nunchuck. It senses you motion a simple swing to tackle your opponent. All of the buttons feel like they were mapped correctly and motion control was added in the right place. Although the motion control wasn’t used much it still felt like a great game.

Gameplay: 9.5
With so many different choices it makes the game so much fun. Stage interaction makes it not just a background but a great environment. Multiplayer mode also makes the game very enjoyable.

Lastability: 9.0
With a challenging challenge mode and a difficult one person mode this game will keep you occupied for a long time, Plus multiplayer mode which always has something new for you to try.

Final: 9.0
Overall it is a great game that is definitely worth a buy. If you don’t have the money I would entirely suggest a rental. Labels Nintendo’s first multiplayer game that actually is decent is why it gets its 9.0

Reader Reviews / Kid Icarus.
« on: August 12, 2007, 01:24:37 PM »
Kid Icarus.

Pit the captain of Paluten's army, premeired on the NES in July of 1987 and is still a game that many people love, and enjoy today. The Original 2-D arrow shooting angle launched onto the Wii's Virtual Console on Febuary 12th 2007. Plus he was also on other systems like the Game Boy Advance and the Famicom Disk System. This game consists of sidescrolling action while on a journey to destroy Medusa the goddess of the underworld. To learn the whole story get the game, or judge whether you should buy it with this review.

Kid Icarus uses a password saving system, which I beleive works quite well. Although you can just use the Wii Menu save, the password save is a great backup.

Gameplay moves farely quickly while you have to be very careful at the same time. While climbing upwards or across you must be careful not to fall downward. If you do it results with the Game over menu followed by the Sacred Words "Password". I find it quite challenging to climb and shoot down enemy's at the same time, it is difficult but very possible. Although you may find this repetitive there are many things that change things up. One of these is Kid Icarus's unique currency, as you destroy enemy's you collect their hearts which you use to buy items at stores. To enter a store you must find a door during a level, sometimes it is a store, but more often it is a enemy room or a chest room. In enemy rooms you destroy enemys to get hearts, and in chest rooms you must pick one chest out of many which might hold a item.

Sound in the game is wonderful and holds many memorable tunes. One of these my personal favorite, the Grim Reaper theme. This tune has been remixed in the new Super Smash Brothers Brawl song. One of the other songs is the Game Over Tune, they are both very unique and interesting. During regular levels songs are okay but not great. Either way the songs make the game a great buy.

Overall the controls work quite well. The game responds effectively, and moves without flaw. Movement is quite simple, because you only use three buttons. The left and right on the D-Pad, and the 2 button. The 2 button is used to jump. The only other button used is the 1 button which is used to shoot arrows at enemys. It is not hard to master, but takes practice to put together perfectly.

The game holds perfect replay value, because no matter how many times you play it, it always proves its difficulty. It is just like a arcade game, it never gets boring.

Pro's
+ Infinent Replay Value.
+ Good Difficulty Level

Con's
- Can be Difficult to Some.

Overall Score 9.5/10

Reader Reviews / Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess
« on: July 12, 2007, 02:16:51 PM »
Link, riding Epona travels over the Hyrule Fields in search of the next Fused Shadow. This is just one of your goals as you control Link in this 3-D Adventure game. But what other mysteries does this game hold?

The Legend of Zelda franchise has been one of Nintendo's top selling franchises; Twilight Princess, however, did not meet the viewers' standards, it exceeded them. Although this game may seem like the sequel to Ocarina of time, it is completely different in many ways. Characters, Items, and Control these are just a few of the changes from OoT to TP.

Twilight Princess consists of one story with many different parts, your objectives change quite often which add a twist to the game play. But one goal that doesn't change is defeating Ganondorf. Twilight Princess however adds many different obstacles along your path. First you are thrown into the Twilight Realm, not as human, but as a wolf. But being a wolf  has its advantages, you can move at faster speed and you are introduced to brand new attacks. While in the Twilight Realm you meet Midna, a small, powerful, twilight dwelling creature. Midna helps you escape from the Twilight Realm, but in return you must help her collect Fused Shadows. This is just one of the many things you must do to defeat Ganondorf. All of these story elements blend together to create a wonderful adventure game. It is probably one of the most in depth story's ever in a Zelda game.

The Game features many mini games and extras that are quite fun. For example you can canoe down a river, or try to capture stars. A fishing area is available after completing the 3rd dungeon. There are also other goals like collecting bugs randomly placed around Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess has many different attacks triggered by different combinations. For example a horizontal slash only takes a flick or remote, and for a stab you must hold Z to target, push forward on control stick, and swing you Wii remote. During the game you also become a wolf who has completely different attacks and abilities. As a wolf you can dig an use your nose to track scents. Wolf Link uses the same attack combinations as regular Link, they just look a little different. Overall the controls and abilities are easy to learn and use. In the end you will be quite pleased with them.

Just like other Legend of Zelda games, there is great replay ability. The game takes a average 30-40 hours to complete, not including extras. Once you have completed the game you can always go back and complete everything you didn't get around to. You could most likely do the story 2-3 times before getting bored with it. If you do get bored you could wait 3-4 months, and I am sure you could pick it up again. Overall for a adventure game it has great replay ability.

Pro's
Great replay ability
Amazing Story
Good variety

Con's
A More Free Control would have been nice.

Final Score: 9.5/10

Reader Reviews / Wii Play
« on: July 10, 2007, 06:59:12 AM »
A $10 game with a $40 controller. (Wii Play)

Wii Play is a extension to Wii Sports, which is still one of the best games for the Wii. But Wii Play does not meet Wii Sports greatness. It comes with 9 games, Shooting Range, Find Mii, Table Tennis, Pose Mii, Laser Hockey, Billiards, Fishing, Charge, and Tanks. It is also packaged with a extra Wii Remote. When you first hear about this game it sounds like a great deal, but it is not a great deal. Yes it is nice to get that Wii Remote, but the games are not very interesting.

Among the 9 mini games only 3 are worth replaying, Tanks, Shooting Range, and Find Mii. Tanks is the only game that is uses the nunchuck. It is a simple game in which you drive around and use both missiles and Mines to destroy enemy tanks. Shooting Range is a Duck Hunt style game. You progress through 5 stages in which you shoot balloons, targets, clay birds, cans, UFO's, and the occasional duck that fly's across the screen. Find Mii is a completely new style of game. You are given a objective (EX: Find 2 alike Miis), after the objective is given you are given a screen filled with many Mii's. Your goal is to Find 2 alike Mii's. And this continues and grows in difficulty.

In Table Tennis you simply move move your paddle back and forth to try and keep a rally going. Pose Mii is one of the worst games, You simply match your Mii's pose with the pose on the screen. Laser Hockey is an advanced Pong style game, instead of just up and down you can use forward and back also. Billiards is a point, pull the wii remote back, and push forward to shoot, it isnt very exciting. Fishing is a simple game, you just lower the Wii Remote into the pond and wait until the fish bites. When it bites you pull the Wii Remote upward. In Charge! you race ontop of cows trying to knock over scarecrows.

The game itself will not keep you entertained for a very long time. You will play it only the day you get it, then you will play it occasionally. The game is very simple and the Mini Games arnt very entertaining. The only challenge you are given is to collect gold medals in all of the 9 games. This is very simple though. The only game that will give you difficulty is Tanks because of its difficulty on some levels.

The sound in the game however is quite nice. It is not choppy and matches the actions in the game nicely. For example when firing in the Shooting Range game it actually sounds realistic. But of course some of the games sounds are superior to others. Overall the sound is a wonderful part of the game.

Pros
+ Comes Packaged with a controller
+ Nice Sound

Cons
- Games will not keep you entertained for long periods of time
- Games are boring

Overall Score: 3.5/10
