Whats next ?
« on: December 01, 2003, 07:01:43 PM »

Hey ppls. I was sitting down last night thinking...whats next? We had 2d, 3d etc But we cant keep adding on polygons.

Soon it will be realistic graphics. People play games to escape reality . What could come next is beyond me. But is it beyond you? Do you know whats next ?

Virtual Reality isnt too realistic ( I mean its so expensive and complicated , It also cant be good for your health ) .

We'll eventually texture mapping and great lighting will become the all out most important part of making graphcis look good. Right now alot of stuff is merely goroudshaded with a hack shadow and some inaccurate colorful lightign effects.

in class today i made this freakishly realistic scene of a printign press...i made the lighting effects dark added bumb mappign and reflection and i fiddled and i turned on the shadows(they were default off) and WHOA. Things looks great. Next gen lighting effects, texture effects, and shaders will be the thing that really pushes games to looking realistic.

ThePerm hit the nail on the head - refinement is what will happen with the next generation of consoles and games, not some insane concept like 4D or virtual reality.
In my opinion, VR will not work while the hardware is so large and obvious. Who'd be seen dead with a large black saucer over their face? Not me

As the systems will be able to push more of everything, expect environments to be more interactive. But hopefully the creative games still continue as I fear visuals will continue to be emphasised over gameplay like it is today...

I think Scott MacDonald, a reader of EDGE, said it best:

'2009: Gaming as we know it has ceased to exist. After games were finally recognised as art forms in 2007, all new games are reviewed purely based on graphics, sound and 'realism' with no mention of 'gameplay' at all. Home consoles are no longer made and new games have to be visited in special Sony and Microsoft 'galleries' around the country, to be 'admired' by strange men in floppy hats, who then write their critiques for the national press (EDGE and gaming magazines no longer exist).
Anybody who speaks out in favour of a 'return to the olden days' is imprisoned for artistic slander. Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Naka are currently serving life for attempting to make 'fun' games. The gamers have gone underground. The bedroom is back. Radiant Silvergun fetches 1 million pounds. And it's raining.'

- Taken from 'Prophet Forecast', a feature in EDGE magazine's 100th issue -

We are somehow slowly almost reaching this point, people.......

I can't say I like the look of where games are going now. Many of the best selling games are simply overly violent or borderline pornographic. Crap like that has seeped into even traditional franchises. I wouldn't mind if this was only a small section of games,  but it isn't, it's almost everywhere. Perhaps one day there will be another big crash when people realise exactly what they are buying so much of. At least I can trust Nintendo to keep on pouring out good games.

Have you seen the commercial they made ages ago about playstation 9?  Where the game comes to life, and your in it?  That's what is next, and it will be sweet ass!

I remember the last line they said in the commercial....

"Playstation 9, where playstation 2 and 3 are only the beginning."

Thats what I'm worried about ppl , No Gameplay and More Graphics .

Now adding textures , lighting etc is already being used. The only real graphical improvement would be that everything is touchable. You dont miss anything in the game. Hard to explain but here i go.

When I wa;l into a room I pick up a candle , straighten up the picture on the wall. Write a letter. etc. All these moves affect your gamplay. Sorta what Silicon Knights were promising with Too Human.

Two things will happen.

1. Companies like Sony and MS will strive to use the increased power of their consoles to make games more and more realistic with Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within level graphics, realistic sound, accurate physics, incredibly advanced AI, etc.  These games will focus almost entirely on presentation, will take years to develop, and will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make.  These will be the videogame equivalent of epic special effects movies like Star Wars Episode I and The Matrix Reloaded.  Like those movies these games will F*CKING SUCK despite all of the hype and money thrown into the project.  Also like those movies these things will sell huge.

2. Nintendo will concentrate on making games based on gameplay and fun instead of detailed graphics and realism.  Though they do not sell as many copies as Sony's and MS's games because Nintendo puts less money into their projects and releases them more frequently the big N manages to remain quite profitable.  Unable to make money competing with Sony's and MS's giant blockbusters companies like Capcom, Sega, and Namco develop exclusively for Nintendo's consoles where they can make more money for less development costs.  Hardcore gamers flock to Nintendo's console while the brainwashed masses stick with Sony and MS.  Nintendo becomes the critical favourite and continues to remain profitable while being supported by hardcore gamers.

After years of this the casual audience grows tired of gaming and Sony and MS abandon the gaming industry after losing millions on blockbuster games that don't make a profit.  Gaming becomes a hardcore hobby and a past time for kids until ten years later a new media giant decides to throw their hat in the ring and it all starts over again.  Eventually after numerous cycles Nintendo goes out of business and the gaming industry dies for good.

With an increase in system power becomes and increase in system flexibility. Alot of things are left out of games because its difficult to put it in without wasting memory and processing power. So research and testing has to be done to include it. This is one of the things that causes game dev tiem to slow down. Eventually it will not be difficult to just add things in without having a cost to power which could result in a headache inducing framerate drop.

I've always been afraid of things going to VR. . . that'd throw a lot of innovation down the drain. . . bye bye, good old 2D.  Good bye fun.

But Nintendo probably won't go that way. . . the may make some VR environments, but I imagine that they will maintain innovation by some means or another.  Basically agreeing with what Ian said.

Once the graphics playing field is leveled, the only other place to step is into the gameplay block...And that is where Ninty has succeeded and will succeed in the future...

Yes but what else can be added? The industry will just be going around in circles . Its already started , ALL of the next years most anticipated games are sequels.

Ninga Gaiden
Grand Turismo
Half Life 2
Mgs 3
Mgs TT
Final Fantasy ( whatever there up to now ? Its become daily that a new FF game is announced )

You all get my point.

In my opinion , not many companies are making an effort for originalaty , Not even Nintendo . Most are trying to cash in on the latest craze ( GTA ) . Capcom seem to be innovating quite alot . Viewtiful Joe is something new and original . So is PN03 , it might have been a failure but it was an original effort.

Gameplay seems to be going stale as of late . The indistry is leading to nowhere. And its quite sad really. Pikmin and Animal Crossing are some of the few games this generation that standout as original master pieces ( Including VJ of course )

I can go on WAY more but I will leave that to 2morrow.

Sequels get more attention because there is something that people feel already represents their comming quality: their prequel. Only orginal games that already come from popular developers will ever get much respect pre-release, and even then, often only if the games share generes with the developer's past games.

I agree with akdaman1 about final fantasy, there are 16 final fantasies (1 on gameboy, 1 on gameboy advance, 1 on gamecube pretty soon, 1 - 11 and 11 part 2, and soon 12!).  When is the story going to end?  In fact, final fantasy isn't a "story" it's the same series with different people, and different areas, and situations.  What's so popular about it?  Don't get me wrong, but i love final fantasy and the final fantasy movie, but seriously, its never ending so far.

It will simply come down to a refinement of craft.  Even if the genres lessen, that doesn't mean people will stop playing video games -- just like people don't stop going to see romantic movies or westerns, etc.  I think graphics have already ceased to matter this generation.  There is a certain level you can't go below, but for the most part, when I'm playing a game, the graphics become pretty much transparent after just a few minutes.  The only exception that I've had to that recently has been FFCC, which is just gorgeous -- but that again comes down to the artistic merits more than making things more technically impresssive or realistic.

I wish what you said was true Bloodworth (That graphics seemed to really mean nothing this generation) .     But it does. People were hyping up XIII to be the next Metroid becaus eof its beautiful graphics. When I read a review on F-Zero its all graphics. I care about Graphics but it does not make my decision when I am buying a game.

Gameplay is also going stale, nowdays its only sequels , its true they sell more etc etc and are recognised by casual gamers but soon when Link has played every single instrument created, When Mario get tired of saving Peach then who are we going to turn to?

Another Final Fantasy movie?
Considering the flop of the one already released, I don't think it's really wise move, unless they are so hellbent on trying to get the world attention with 'HEY HEY! Look at us! We can make realistic humans!' They should stop spending MILLIONS and MILLIONS and just hire actors.
I find characters like Woody, Buzz, Sully, Mike, Marlin and Dory have more character and emotion that the characters in FF: TSW ever did.
That said though, the movie wasn't all THAT bad. I liked it in its own way.
The thing with the movie was that it came off too much as a sci-fi rather than a fantasy film. I'd like a more adventure-fantasy film, with far off kingdoms and magic and huge battles with mystical creatures. Not space cannons, jumpsuits and aliens.
