de Blob 2: The Underground Impressions
« on: June 29, 2010, 08:59:52 PM »

de Blob's portable outing is heavy on the 2D sidescrolling.

A de Blob DS game was supposed to come out alongside the Wii version, but it kept on getting delayed until it eventually faded
into non-existence. From the ashes of that game comes de Blob 2: Underground for DS.

Taking place long after the events
of the other games, de Blob 2's villain is Dr. Von Blot, a maniacal scientist experimenting on Mutated Ink. de Blob stumbles
upon his underground lair, which conveniently is all in two dimensions.

You control the titular blob as he goes through
different levels of side-scrolling gameplay while using wall jumps and slingshots to manuever. The game's color mechanic returns,
but in a different manner. de Blob can still mixed colors, but the color is directly tied to his health, and once he gets
hit three times, he loses his color. Aside from that, he has inifinite color.

It's a pretty big departure for the series,
and it seems to be a good one. The 2D gameplay is more akin to something like Sonic the Hedgehog as opposed to the 3D sandbox
gameplay of the other games in the series.

I played a few levels at E3 2010, most of which were basic levels. The last
level I played involved lava, and launching de Blob through the level quickly to get past the lava.

It'll be a while
before fans get to finally play a de Blob game on DS, though, since this game is set for a spring 2011 release.

If I have to answer this question for every DS game I see from here on out, I'll get angry.

In this case, I don't think it would do much for the game the way it is. If this were more like de Blob on consoles, then 3D effects would be welcome/warranted.

It looks like the 3DS version will be the same as the DS version, but there really isn't any information on it right now. We'll have to wait until both are released and the reviews are out.

I don't think there is a 3DS version of this game. There is a 3DS de Blob in the works, but it's apparently not going to be a port of this game.

Do you have any information on it? It may not have the subtitle of "The Underground" but it still has the title "de Blob 2." That leads me to believe it will be similar to either the Wii or DS game, and not an entirely new game.

There was an interview recently where one of the developers talked about how they were excited about the potential of de Blob 3DS and that they hadn't started work on it because they're busy with the other versions.

Thanks for the impressions!

Do you guys have any media for this game? I guess I wasn't paying close attention to the DS version, but the fact that it's a 2D sidescroller comes as a surprise to me.

Almost sounds like it might be something like Splosion Man on XBLA. Fast paced sidescrolling with zips here and there to propel you through levels.

Hope it receives the same love and detail of the original. I just picked that one up and I'm having tons of fun with it.
