And of course there's the specter of completely digital distribution in the future...

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Ten years from now is a long time, so in ten years this product will be needed, but Sony wants all the ps3 users to have it now.  In ten years there could even better replacement besides the obviously growing digital distribution.

DVDs cannot display in HD, most people don't realize that. The reason for the new format is HD, and while it's not needed so much now it does make sense in the long run. The bad part is their refusal to decide on one format, which is almost exclusively Sony's insistence on owning the format.

In ten years or so we can do something BETTER than Blu-Ray or HD-DVD... technology progresses at such a rate that releasing something with the intention that a decade down the road it might be useful to the majority is absurd. Also, it's going to take more than enhanced video to convince people to adopt a new format (case in point Laserdiscs).

>>45 minutes per disc? <<

I thought they had 80minutes.

Anyways was that the only difference? Cuz they also have Super VCD which holds more than regualr and most dvd plaeyrs can play VCDs too right.

AFAIK SVCD holds less but at a better resolution. Either way you can't fit an entire movie on a VCD, most movies come in two or three VCDs at popular Russian "retailers".

"better" being 480x480 (576 in PAL).... they have a higher bitrate as well...

the main problem with VCD is that the quality is crap (SVCD not so much, but takes too many discs to store anything...), so both were absolutely inferior to DVD...

10 years is a long time, maybe the Earth has blown up by then XD
DVDs COULD display HD content if a good codec (as MPEG-2 is pretty inefficient with compression) was chosen to do so and implemented in the disc players (for example, Live's VOD system has HD movies which don't even fill a DVD....)

Resolution and length. A VCD was 320x240 and could fit maybe 90-100 minutes of content. DVDs are 480p and can support several hours per disc.

I tried to play the PS3 on display, but there was this permanent image of some basketball game frozen on the screen.

The DVD standard does not include HD playback, DVD players cannot output it and I'm not sure you're even allowed to use a HD resolution and still call it a DVD.

DVD players at most can only do 480p but still theres no real benefits of high def DVDs yet. And DVDs are dirt cheap and are still good so theres no reason at all to upgrade. Sony is just biting their PS3 loses to get more sales(profits) on two fronts 1. Blu-ray 2. Games (direct profits or profits from 3rd party royalties).

Although I personally like discs better, I have to wonder if digital distribution has a better chance than Blu-Ray or HD DVD.  It seems possibly more convenient.
That's my opinion, not yours.

This is a side-note at best, but you know that Genesis game, Phantasy Star III: Generations Of Doom?

If it didn't use Roman numerals and was just "Generation", i.e. "PS3: Generation Of Doom", it could be prophetic, perhaps.  XD

Uh, no, scratch that.  >_<

(Though that reminds me, I did like the short form some people gave to Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee.)

Sorry, I thought this was the other PS3 topic.  Back on topic, how many PS3 games so far make use of the tilt sensor, and are they any good?

Atari actually coined that I think, most people that I know just called it G: DAMM... which is only slightly confusing for people who are familiar with the old SNES fighter G: DAM (Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters). Speaking of, I would love it if Toho released that game to the virtual console, as the US version, although produced and reviewed by sources like Nintendo Power, was never actually released.

I managed to play the PS3 last night at my local Best Buy, and I am not impressed. It was some motorcycle racing game, and although the visuals were decent the game just wasn't fun. The controller feels cheap and I honestly had trouble even figuring out how to go! I hit some boost button and my motorcycle blew up after a bit, so I had no idea what to do except don't hold the turbo in so long.
