Gaming demographics differ from political ones. You can generalize, but it lessens the validity of your point. Who expected Donkey Kong to sell WiiUs? Not one site, including this one pegged that title as a "system seller", formally known as a "killer app"?  I don't think Nintendo thought that either. It was a supplemental title at best. A support trophy if you will, not on the main roster.

Which leads me to the meat. Smash bros. is the ONE.  The game that can and will sell  systems.

Mario kart 8 comes out next week, these are people picking it up in advance of that. NSMB U. Also saw a considerable jump this week. Next week, Nintendo will crush the world under its Zero G gas pedal. Expect Wii u to jump to 35-40k and MarioKart8 to hit about 300,000 for the month.

I don't get the notion Wii was a once in a lifetime success considering Sony had TWO generations in a row that sold that well and had that same level of success. PS3 is considered a "flop" because it 'barely' sold 60+ million and somehow SNES which sold less than that was a smash success? I think people put too much into the numbers.

I don't think Metroid would have moved consoles. I don't have a Wii U yet but I am still interested in Super Mario 3D World and DKC:TP, a new Metroid for me at least would have to be a side scroller like the old ones or else not interested. I enjoyed prime but that was it, I didn't care one bit for it's sequels.

The Playstation did big numbers, had all the support and long steady sales because of it.
Playstation 2 did bigger numbers, had all the support and did even longer steady sales because of it.

Wii came off a failure, had little to no serious support, was sold out for the first 3 years, and did record numbers in those 3 years based off of HYPE and Nintendo Wii___ games. Had the Wii held long steady sales like the PS/2... it would have sold like 200M systems by now. It was a once in a lifetime lightning strike on a gold mountain encrusted with diamonds. Nintendo obviously couldn't recreate it if they wanted to... because they already tried and failed.

PS3 is considered a "Flop" because despite selling 60Million consoles, they lost every bit of profit from the PS/2 generations in the first 3-4years on the market first.
Just as the Xbox Division is considered a disaster despite selling 50-60M X360 consoles, since regardless of what they have sold, the division has yet to come within $1B of breaking even, much less making a profit.

SNES was a "smashing" success because it was awesome. It was the Playstation before there was a playstation. It may not have sold as much as the NES, but there was a smaller market and stiff competition from Sega, and other competitors in the market like NeoGeo, CDi, and a few others I can't remember right now (Pippin?) that the NES didn't really have.

PS3 wasn't and isn't a flop. It wasn't profitable for a long time, but it still sold over 80 million systems (don't know where that 60 came from). Xbox 360 also sold 80 million.

The Playstation had stiff competition for a year too. Most of that was killed off early on but when it launched it was up against Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, Jaguar, Neo Geo CD, 3DO, and it was a new unknown company to the video game arena. They didn't just put it out and it sold like hot cakes it took off quickly sure but it was a bumpy first year, it's first year it was out sold by Saturn. There were others out there and by the time n64 came along most of the other competition was long gone leaving just PS and N64 to duke it out as Sega was already showing their irrelevance by then.

PS2 had a big help in that it was ridding the success of PS1 and it was riding the DVD hype train for the first year or so. Once that wore off it was too late the machine was up and running. Wii sold like crazy Nintendo could have turned that around and repeated it with Wii U, they chose not because they listened to those who wanted a supposedly more hard core machine. Wii was only $250 when it launched, which was of course barely fifty bucks higher than it's predecessors, Ps2 was priced for the masses it launched at $300 bucks, could play PS1 and Ps2 games and was a decent DVD player for the time, price wise anyways. PS3 was over priced when it was new Wii U is still overpriced for what it is.

Wii lost steam early on but at least it had some steam to being with, Game Cube was an uphill battle the entire time and yet it did better than Wii U is doing right now. The reality is nobody can predict where Nintendo did wrong or what will fix them, not even Nintendo can figure it out so it's just such a crazy business. If anything in the gaming industry made sense Atari would still be running the show.
