NWR Forums Discord / What else can we do to torture Crimm?
« on: May 26, 2015, 01:35:39 AM »
Looking at the front page of the site, you'll see that one of my predecessors as Forum King has been playing Sonic Boom, possibly because of some kind of lost bet or blackmail scenario. This has made me realize that we should have been doing far more to torment him since he abandoned us to hang out with all the cool kids in the Podcast Discussion section.

Therefore I am opening the floor for suggestions on what we can do to him. I'm looking for creative, innovative suggestions. Somehow we need to top what's already been done.

It's been an eventful week on the forums, with general insanity reaching new highs. But the real question is, which of the two complete breakdowns was superior: Khushrenada's multiple warring personalities, or marvel_moviefan's stream of consciousness ramblings?

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: Full Time: Half-Truths and Gorilla Dust
« on: November 26, 2014, 12:12:59 AM »
In a somewhat anticlimactic ending. The final day has concluded.

RedBlue, AKA Don Garber, the Mafia Rule Bender, was killed by the vote.

This, of course, means a victory for the townies.

Surviving Winners:

Khushrenada, the Protector
Hypotheliciously, the Investigator
Ceric, the Vote Changer
lolmonade, the Survivor
Mop it up, Lucariofan, Stratos, and nickmitch, the Townies
and, of course, Not PokePal148

First off, in my defense, I knew going in this ruleset was probably going to favor the townies.

Secondly, if I had it to do over again, I'd probably have redone the random draw so that Khush and Stogi weren't the two main townie roles, because at that point it was pretty much over.

I think the Allocation Order system worked pretty much exactly how I intended, being somewhat confusing and prompting people to strategize using it in their voting. The main flaw is that I had to spend like 45 minutes each night and have a huge complicated spreadsheet to keep that all straight.

I probably should have added a fourth mafia member when I got a couple more people to come in late, and again, the thing I'm most sorry about is forgetting to tell the mafia who each other were until a couple days in.

EDIT: To be clear, since it was somewhat contentious, Ceric used his vote changing power the last night to change Khush's vote to RedBlue, meaning Ceric ended the game at the top of the Allocation Order.

Nintendo Gaming / Where should Nintendo go from here?
« on: November 25, 2014, 08:24:22 PM »
After a strong showing at E3 this year, and the critically-acclaimed, as well as at least initially quick-selling release of Super Smash Bros., things might be looking up for the Wii U for the first time in a while. Beyond the few releases we know of for next year, what are your hopes and predictions for what Nintendo will do next with their console?

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: Day 6
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:07:13 AM »
As we enter the final stages of the tournament, one side seems to have a commanding lead. As you know, though, in sports, crazy things can happen.

Stevey, AKA Jurgen Klinsmann, the Mafia Vote Nullifier, was killed by the vote.

The Mafia neglected to make a hit tonight.

Ceric is today's Designated Player, #1 in the Allocation Order.

Brandogg, the Townie, was killed by the vote.

Spak-Spang, the Townie, was hit by the Mafia.

Ceric is the Designated Player for today, making him #1 in the Allocation Order.

Day 5 will end Monday, November 24th at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo DS 10th Anniversary
« on: November 21, 2014, 07:11:05 PM »
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Nintendo DS, which became the highest selling game system of all time via some sort of deal with Satan or some such thing, selling over 170 million. As great as the software library was, that kind of success makes less and less sense the more you think of it. I was wondering what kind of thoughts people had about it on this occasion.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: Day 4
« on: November 21, 2014, 08:55:46 AM »
What had been a close, back and forth game explodes with a couple big scores before the break.

Shaymin, AKA Sunil Gulati, the Godfather of the Mafia, was killed by the vote.
.
ShyGuy, the Townie, was killed by the Mafia.

Khushrenada is clearly the Landon Donovan of this game, as for the third straight day he remains the Designated Player.

This day will carry us through the weekend, ending Sunday November 23rd at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: Day 3
« on: November 20, 2014, 12:32:16 AM »
After a scoreless first leg, Day 2 was a bit of a blowout.

Pokepal148, the Townie, was killed by the vote.

Khushrenada was nearly killed by the Mafia, but managed to grind out a result and lives to play another day.

Once again, Khushrenada received the most votes of anyone still alive, and will be the Designated Player once more, sitting atop the Allocation Order.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: Day 2
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:03:02 AM »
Day 1 was an exciting back and forth game, which ended tied in regulation and had to go to penalty kicks. In the end, however, lolmonade couldn't stand up to the pressure, and has been eliminated from the tournament.

An internal FIFA investigation concludes that, while there was absolutely no wrongdoing on the part of FIFA, the votes were incorrectly tabulated.

No one was killed by the vote.

No one was killed by the mafia.

Khushrenada, having received the most votes of anyone not killed, is today's Designated Player, putting him at #1 in the Allocation Order for Day 2.

Today's thread will close at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, November 19th. Pretty sure I got the date right this time.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: MLS Mayhem Roles, Rules, and Player List
« on: November 17, 2014, 08:10:37 PM »
Roles

Townie Roles:

Taylor Twellman - Investigator
He’s the first to know about pretty much everything that happens in the league. Through his mysterious sources he can find the role of any other player.

Nick Rimando - Protector
The best goalkeeper in the league, his ability to consistently make incredible saves allows him to keep one player safe from mafia hits per night.

Landon Donovan - Vote Changer
As both maybe the best American to ever play the game and certainly the most influential, he’s able to use his incredible popularity to convince one person per night to vote for who he wants them to.

Clint Dempsey - Survivor
One of the toughest players the U.S. has ever produced, he’s able to grit through injuries. Because of his toughness, he is immune to mafia hits and is only able to be killed through the vote.

Mafia Roles:

Sunil Gulati - Godfather
As President of the U.S. Soccer Federation, he exerts his will over everything involving the sport. He can kill one player per night, and shows up as a townie in investigations.

Jurgen Klinsmann - Vote Nullifier
The head coach of the U.S. national team, Klinsmann can call one player per day up to play in an international match, preventing them from voting.

Don Garber - Rule Bender
As commissioner of Major League Soccer, he’s regularly accused of fudging the rules to favor big teams. Every night he can change one players position in the Allocation Order (more on that in a little bit) the following day.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXIV: MLS Mayhem Sign-Up Thread
« on: October 29, 2014, 04:57:33 PM »
As I've hinted at in the Future Mafia Games thread, I was struck by inspiration for a game based on my beloved Major League Soccer. You don't need to be a fan of the league, or even really at all familiar with it, in order to play, although I think if you are you'll appreciate some of the satirical elements in there.

Right now I'm intending to start play on November 10 Monday, November 17, which could really screw me over because there's a chance that day could be when my favorite team gets eliminated from the playoffs.

I don't quite have the roles and rules finalized yet, but it's in keeping with the league to not tell you the rules ahead of time. They will be here well ahead of the start of the game, though, so I'm quite a bit more transparent than Don Garber.

EDIT: As mentioned below, I'm going to have to push this back a week due to the real life issues that always seem to plague me whenever there's a mafia game.

Nintendo Gaming / Where does the Virtual Console go from here?
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:28:26 PM »
Between the various Castlevania titles and Demon's Crest, not to mention the unexpected return of Donkey Kong Country, at least in Europe, the Virtual Console has had its best month in quite a while. With the pace of releases speeding up (at least on the Wii U), Nintendo seems to be taking the service more seriously.

We've seen theme weeks and sales, but what else do you think Nintendo should do to revitalize the service? Is there a specific tactic you think Nintendo should take with it, or a specific addition they should make? What platform should be the next addition to the library?

NWR Forums Discord / PSA: Pay attention to your emails.

I found I won the Back-to-School Sweepstakes from Aspyr, one of the bigger Mac game publishers. This prize includes every one of their games and a fully-loaded MacBook Pro. And I very nearly missed it entirely because I skimmed over the first email they sent telling me I won.

So two lessons: 1, enter every sweepstakes you can find, because you might actually win, and 2, for the love of god, at least read part of the emails you get before deleting them.

In a landmark study, researchers in Britain found that people who spend several hours a day browsing the Nintendo World Report Forums are better adjusted both mentally and emotionally than those who use their time for other, more obviously productive activities. This is just the latest in a line of studies that show browsing NWR's forums makes you more intelligent, emotionally healthy, and sexually attractive.

We know a lot of what Nintendo has planned to release this year, with titles like Smash Bros., X and Yarn Yoshi to look forward to. But there are sure to be, or at least will hopefully be, other titles that we don't currently know about.

What do you hope to see out of Nintendo? Try to stay at least somewhat realistic, but feel free to go a little crazy if it's something you really want to see.

Personally, I really want to see a new entry in the Advance Wars series. I've always been a big fan of those games, and have really been in the mood for one lately. Releasing some of the older ones on the 3DS/Wii U eShop would be great too.

General Gaming / What games should everybody play?
« on: March 07, 2014, 10:20:44 AM »
I think this is a different question than asking what the best games are. Sometimes something comes along that might not be the best game, but does things that are unique and interesting that everyone should experience.

I think the game Portal fits this description very well. I like it a lot, though I don't think it's among the all-time greats, but it brings a whole new style to first-person gaming that should at least be tried by anyone who likes gaming.

What examples do you think fit these criteria? Do you even agree with the premise I laid out?

Nintendo Gaming / What will this year be the year of for Nintendo?
« on: February 19, 2014, 06:44:04 AM »
Now that we know The Year of Luigi will officially be ending March 18, that raises the question: what will the following year be?

The Year of Luigi sometimes felt like a forced premise, but Nintendo certainly backed it up with a significant number of games featuring the green-clad plumber. What will the rest of 2014 be defined by in the world of Nintendo? There are a lot of different ways you could take the question, but I'd love to hear your suggestions and the reasoning behind them.

General Gaming / Flaws in Great Games
« on: February 14, 2014, 08:17:11 AM »
We all have games that we'd consider among the best we've ever played, but as is always said, no game is perfect. Even the best games have certain flaws that stand out among the greatness. What are some such flaws you've seen in games that you love?

For me, as I was playing through Super Metroid recently, I was struck by a couple things in a game I'd otherwise consider one of my all-time favorites. First off, the platforming really doesn't feel as good as you'd want it to. Even with all the upgrades, it never felt great. Also, a much more glaring problem, the weapon switching system was just awful. Having to cycle through all the options got more and more clunky over the course of the game.

General Gaming / Biggest Gaming Regrets
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:27:48 AM »
I think everyone here has probably been playing video games for a while, and has done a lot of things in that regard. Still, no matter how long you've been playing, I'll bet we all have something in gaming we regret. Whether it's something we missed out on, or something we did and wish we hadn't, I thought this would be an interesting discussion to bring up those things from our gaming pasts.

For me, it's how many things I've sold. There are plenty of games I've sold that I'm perfectly okay with, but when it comes to systems, I almost always regret the decision. I sold my Genesis and Dreamcast only to end up buying those systems again later on, and I still wish I hadn't sold my GameCube and Game Boy Player.
