I began migrating to digital a few years into the Switch life and honestly, I'm happy with it. I adore physical media but these new ones just don't feel the same as this nice old bulky carts. And digital is way more convenient for me these days. I have also decided I don't give a crap about the "ownership" and availability because there are some wonderful fans who make a job out of "archiving" old games so I really believe I'll be able to find nearly anything I would want by sailing the high seas and modifying my older consoles. I've already done it on Wii and 3DS, so that is always an option for me to find the older stuff.

So yeah, I registered to buy the Mario Kart Digital Switch 2 system and expect to get everything digitally.

Any chance you could just copy my 2024 list since I said I may as well do that and then promptly forgot to post a new list?  :o

TalkBack / Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Announced for Switch 2

I thought the intro looked pretty engaging with a little mystery to see what’s coming next.

On another topic… I’m only realizing today that when Nintendo uploaded the trailer to Nintendo News the trailer was edited. Not on YouTube but only the Nintendo app, there is a quick scene of DK giving Cranky some high fives. I can only imagine much like Sakurai and his ear to the ground for us ravenous Smashers, the Bananza team knows what DK fans are concerned about. At first glance when you watch that trailer it feels a lot like Jungle Beat where there is seemingly very little connection to previous games. I think they wanted that, they wanted players to find relief with Cranky and spread the word during the Treehouse segments. As time went on there were a lot of little Easter eggs and direct references to past games. I’m guessing there are going to be massive amounts of call backs to every era of DK.

When you buy a Wii game on the eShop, it downloads to the Wii U memory. But does it also save there, or does it save to the Wii Mode memory like a disc-based Wii game would? I'm asking because I want to be able to move my save games to the SD card so I can continue a Skyward Sword game on a Wii after starting it on my Wii U with the eShop version. fnaf

You can transfer your save data to an SD card, which allows you to move it between the Wii U and a Wii console. This means you can start a game on your Wii U and then continue it on a Wii by transferring the save file.

Since Valve is determined to keep the Steam Deck as niche as possible, the Switch has literally no competition.

I don't know much about the steam deck, what do you mean by this?

I'm sorry but everything you mentioned in your article is not what hurt the Wii U.  The Wii U's biggest problem was it had a small lineup of games throughout it's lifespan, with terrible 3rd party support that lead to horrible droughts in software and the much cheaper 3DS offering similar experiences to most of the major Nintendo Wii U titles, leaving the only audience for it the most hardcore Nintendo fans who needed to have the latest Nintendo games in HD.

Seriously, let's compare the launch lineup.  The Wii U's flagship title was New Super Mario Bros U, released 3 months after New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS.  Doesn't help that both games were just rehashing much of what New Super Mario Bros Wii did just 3 years earlier.  Then the next major game was Mario 3D World in November 2013, a full YEAR after launch.  Between that you had slim pickings from third parties, and Nintendo's own titles were very niche like a Wario Ware spinoff and Pikmin 3.

Meanwhile the Switch 2 will launch with Mario Kart World, the super ambitious sequel to a game that came out over 8 years ago, that not only makes major changes to the Mario Kart formula, but even includes a massive open world for people to explore.  The next major game after this will be brand new 3D Donkey Kong, which looks to be a super ambitious as well, which comes out just a little over a month later.

Plus when you compare third party support at launch and what's coming in the near future, the Switch 2 third party lineup from just what we know about is lightyears better then the Wii U's lifetime total was.

Seriously, at the end of the day it's all about the games that determine the success of a console.  The Wii U's biggest failure was Nintendo being unable to probably support it and the 3DS at the same time, which is the entire reason they began the process of merging their home console and handheld divisions right after the Wii U launch.  This is why comparing the Switch 2 to the Wii U and even the 3DS is beyond silly when Nintendo has already shown the lineup for the Switch 2 at launch is a massive improvement over both systems when they launched.

Plus everyone seems to forget the other part of the Switch success is being a hybrid system.  Since Valve is determined to keep the Steam Deck as niche as possible, the Switch has literally no competition.  So if you want a hybrid console that can play the latest Nintendo games, as well as major third party titles like Cyberpunk and Elden Ring, the Switch 2 is the only console that can do that.  Yeah there's rumor of Microsoft and Sony working on something but those won't be out until 2027 at the earliest and by that time the Switch 2's library will be so massive, it'll be hard for Microsoft and Sony to really take away any attention from the Switch 2.

Alright, not a lot of love for Sega games, but how about...

What are your favorite platformers on Switch?

Thanks to insanolord for the suggestion!

I played Hollow Knight on Switch, so there's that.  Won't elaborate since it's widely lauded and known.

Nine Sols is the metroidvania/Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice cross-over I didn't know I needed.  Rivals Hollow Knight in quality IMO.

Sonic Mania is a special game to me, and I'm glad they at least did one go-around of classic sonic gameplay.  Beautiful reimagining of some classic levels too.

Pepper Grinder is a pretty fun if short time, but I didn't feel like I needed more once the credits hit.

I know The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa got some buzz, but the same independent dev's Fading Afternoon felt like a big jump in their beat-em-up system with its refinements coupled with what is a life management sim of a character slowly losing time from terminal illness.  It's a high pressure experience that felt like his most complete work.

Disney's Illusion Island is one of the most approachable 2D platformers in the metroidvania style and a lot of fun to play with family & friends.  Lots of features to make the game easier for individual players too.

Okinawa Rush is a bit unweildy but the arcade 2D brawler is such a cool experience, and the kung fu movie sensibility is a lot of fun.

Yes!

It's a long story (the two videos tell it best), but we successfully got the full 16 player mode working after much work.

I understand the desire to compare Switch 2 to Wii U, but I think the much better comparison in this case would be Switch 2 to 3DS. A largely iterative follow-up to extremely successful hardware where the biggest issue early on seems to be a higher than expected price.

I see your point and you're not the first one to mention this.  You're right in that direct 1-1 compare/contrast, but I think there's enough value in seeing it from the console perspective because of how same, but different they are and how that might affect their level of success this go-around.
