A friend of mine made a strong comparison between Evangelion and Fry's opera in Futurama.  The short version is, "Greatest anime ever sucks!"  I tend to agree.  Part of the problem is that there's a fair bit of material that's important to understanding the plot that was completely left out of the anime, which adds to both its mysterious appeal and its WTF-ness.  Since reading about some of it, I've been wanting to watch the series again, but I don't think I could ever convince that friend to.

They went back and made a movie to finish the series "properly," but it's mostly a big middle finger to all the fans who complained about the original ending.  The movie even includes pictures of death threats sent to whatshisname.  Considering he was already pretty messed up en la cabeza, I'm sure that sort of thing contributed directly to the depressing ending.

Yeah try and watch End of Evangelion oohboy. I mean it's terrible and you wont like it but it's better than the character interviews.

Looks like I will be doing some hunting. I sort of considered episode 24 the end of the series. The last two to be sort of extra, an epilogue of sorts.

I think complaints about SEED were that it's too super-roboty. Remember, this is the series that started the real robot genre.

I never found Gundam to "Real real" however, it is "real" in the sense that it is generally true to it's own universe. Bitching otherwise and you start killing catgirls. I can't see why one would complain SEED was super-roboty when compared to to everything else I have seen, is a return to it's roots.

Most of the reviews I have read for some reason contain a lot of rage. The same level of rage as if Nintendo gave Mario a pulse rifle and sent him off to hunt aliens. I guess they were overly critical without being analytical. That is something I want nothing of.

Ok, so I went and got what was probably the wrong thing, death and rebirth. If I take that and splice that in where the last two episodes are, it is much better, although still not conclusive. However, it got it cheap, so I am not worried. Although I am annoyed that it only contains only 40 minutes of actual new story...

Another question. What the hell is this You are (not) alone. At this point I am placing that in the disregard pile.

I think Death and Rebirth is half recut episodes from the series and half first part of the movie End of Evangelion.  It doesn't have any reason to exist.

Over half of it was re-cut episodes. Something that I didn't need. The last 40 minutes which came after a 4:30 intermission of huh? What was shown was badass, however it ends with an allusion to an event that happened to Japan at the end of World War 2. It doesn't tell me what the Human Instrumentally Project was and why everyone was waiting for it. Rie has just up and vanished. Asuka is left in an unwinnable fight. Misato and Shinji is assumed MIA or on the run from the world. Ikari walks away somewhere. The rest of the command crew is left fighting for their lives with no reprieve insight.

It actually leaves me with more questions than at the end of episode 24.

But Kotono Mitsuishi has what has got to be her most badass lines she has ever delivered.  :-* 8)

They have enough of my money on this. I am off to acquire the rest of this another way.

Speaking of high school girls, I like the first 4 episodes of Maburaho. Any takers?

Rewatching GSD. It's still awesome. **** the internet.

The human instrumentality project was supposed to be the next evolution of man. It was to combine all man's mind into one. The idea was to fill a void that "all man posses."  So the show ended with Ikari realising he needed to live for himself and not for others so he destroyed the human instrumentality project.

I saw half of Maburaho.  Then I realized the series was taking too long to get anywhere.  Normally if the base content was cute/ecchi enough, I'd stick around, but it wasn't.

Girls Bravo was time better spent.

Watched it the end and.... well, all I can say is that they tried way too hard. At least it ended.

Edit better than a new post:

Visited a Gundam SEED forum and man there is a special brand of retarded going on there. Although I hear that they sell the same at Gamefaqs.

As for Girls Bravo. Had a look, didn't see any episodes. (Not available in NZ and I am not going to torrent the whole thing on a hunch). However, my gut feelings on it is that if I am going to watch softcore Anime porn, I might as well go all the way. Maybe I will get Maburaho if I can find it cheap enough for my liking.

Ok, I finished rewatching it and got over the OMG holy **** factor and I can see how your sort of right that it is super roboty, it has elements of it. However the goal posts as to what is one or the other has moved a lot since the 80's. Gundam SEED is still true to itself and explains itself just enough to justify what happens onscreen without going George Lucas. Of course this is a lot bigger problem if one doesn't like the characters.

If some one cares only for the robots, they are going to be disappointed regardless of the series seeing that robots aren't characters, only tools and avatars. SEED holds up the core ideals that the original Gundam had without becoming batshit insane like  lot of the other continuities.

Seeing robots as characters or avatars is a super roboty thing, proper real robot shows have the mechs as pure vehicles that are interchangeable. I have no idea how many times Chirico had his mech destroyed and later grabbed a new one in Votoms. A super robot is more or less the image of its pilot, designed to represent his personality. A real robot is a tank with a range of maneuvers that's more interesting to watch. I don't see how the goal posts moved though.

Original Gundam was suppose to have started the entire Real-robot thing. Even back then, because a lot of the characters did get unique robots, the said robots still represented the characters. However, at the same time they still were vehicles. A means to an end, to be place in storage until needed or sacrificed. There is no reason why it couldn't be both.

If real-robots was confined to tank-like line of thought, then the only real robot show I can think of off hand is Patlabour. The moment you give some one a unique mech/vehicle to a character, it is very hard for that character not to to represented by said mech.

Old school Gundam fans bitching that the new stuff is not real robot enough need to reexamine the series(themselves). There was a reason that the original Gundam had head ornaments and colors that wasn't what you call stealthy. That said Gundam was "real robot" compared what came before with your 5 man combining sentai robot shows. Hence why I believe that the goal posts have moved.

So while looking for another anime series in the same line as Death Note, I found something called Code Geass. That show was kinda cool until it became what you guys are describing above. After I saw the episode where he kills his first real enemy (another dude with Geass), I gave it up.

Am I destined to never watch another anime like Death Note again?

Heh. I am pretty picky when it comes to mecha shows of any kind. I don't actually like super robot stuff (I might as well watch DBZ), although I have no problems borrowing elements from it. Without interesting characters that SEED had, you end up with rubbish like Fanafer. And yes I even liked Shinn, although not for the reason you think I might like him (More really to watch him drink Cool-aid and Rage-alcohol).

Oh don't read the SEED manga Astray or otherwise, at least from the SEED line. Utter rubbish.

I am afraid I haven't seen death note. I know the premise, but what is it's attraction?

Most real robot shows have slightly altered mechs for the heroes (e.g. painted a different color or so, possibly some different equipment), some Votoms eps demonstrate why that's necessary (when everyone rides the same mech it's hard to tell who's who, in Mellowlink everyone had a different color on his mech and a few changes to the secondary equipment) but when a hero mech is somehow made of adamantinium and can kill a whole army by itself simply because the attacks from the mooks cannot even damage its armor that's pretty super-roboty. Meh, I guess arguing about all this is pointless, even if something starts out fairly real robot it tends to go super robot towards the second season anyway (*cough*geass*cough*). I think one part of real robot is that most models have prototypes and different upgrade versions whereas super robots are one of a kind. There were eight Gundam units in the original series IIRC and they were super prototypes while in e.g. Gundam 00 the only thing that might qualify as a prototype is the 0 and that thing's never used, every other Gundam is a one-of-a-kind mech.

There was a reason that the original Gundam had head ornaments and colors that wasn't what you call stealthy.

Marketing. Apparently the original color scheme was meant to be more subdued and realistic but marketing insisted that the thing should be painted in the tricolore since all the other super robots out there had those colors.

SEED is the only Gundam series I have liked from what I have seen. V, Wing, SEED. Gundam 00 I am not touching that with a 100ft pole. V contains all sorts of retarded. Wing is super robot with liberal doses of Bullshit.

Mechs in SEED does have proto-types (Original 5) and what not. There is a clear line of evolution with most of the mechs (Not so much for Freedom, Justice, Providence).

Of course for some form of realism one would like to see their Mechs evolve over time(variants, extra equipment etc), however, do it too many time and fans start bitching that the show just wants more model sales. You really can't win. (A charge thrown at GSD)

As long as a series doesn't move towards way or the other over time (Betraying it's own premise) it's ok to mix elements from both schools of robot. SEED does this successfully, where a lot of other don't including most of it's related series. SEED was quite frankly a return to the series' roots with updates and a modern look.

I am afraid I haven't seen death note. I know the premise, but what is it's attraction?

The show is basically a chess game. One player has the ability to kill anyone he wishes by using a notebook called the Death Note; but only with two conditions fulfilled. One, he must have seen their face, and two, he must know their name. The other player is simply a genius detective, trying to find out how this murderer does his deeds and catch him in the act.

It talks about morality and crime and punishment; but mostly, it's just an entertaining game of cat and mouse (with the mouse killing people he sees fit, in order to make the world a better place). As the show progresses, you see the pure geniuses of the two characters collide. Both of them trying to find the other in order to deal with them.

There are literally "Holy ****!" moments that blow your mind. And that's why I loved the show.
