SiNG Impressions
« on: June 26, 2012, 05:27:29 PM »

We just met and this is crazy; but here's a Wii U, so play Sing maybe?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30861

SiNG was probably the moment during Nintendo's press conference where die-hard fans had their second biggest face palm (right after the Nintendo Land fireworks). To the naked eye, SiNG is a silly karaoke game with the gimmick of giving the lead singer the Game Pad so they can read the lyrics there instead of the TV. And, to be honest, that is exactly what SiNG is, but I wouldn't call that a bad thing in any way, shape, or form.

The singer can hold the Game Pad horizontal or vertically and then follow the Game Pad for instructions. There's no interaction outside of the singing, but in addition to the words, the singer also gets directions to give out to the crowd. It's pithy stuff like "Everybody dance!" to, you know, encourage people to dance. There are even some lines that the game encourages you to "let the crowd sing."

The crowd gets to watch the action on the screen, where lyrics are presented in a stylistic manner. They also can don Wii Remotes to dance along with the game. It's sort of like Just Dance in that regard, except there is no scoring in this mode.

That's the one thing that makes SiNG less of a game and more of a karaoke application: there is no game to it as of now. The Nintendo representatives had nothing else to add about the game, but the only modes shown were a Party Mode (for partying, naturally) and a Sing Mode, which is a single-player experience.

SiNG will be out around Wii U's launch later this year, so I guess we will have to wait until then to see if it'll be more of a game.

I know some people are down on this title, but I really think this was made with the Japanese audience in mind. I swear I read in an Iwata Asks that karaoke is bigger in Japan. I don’t know personally, as I’ve never been there, but that’s my assumption.

Question: what is the mic wired to? The GamePad or the Console?

I'm actually TOTALLY buying a Karaoke game this fall, but while I'm starting to dig the "group karaoke" experience of SiNG (I get the idea it's less one person singing, and more one person taking the lead and everyone singing together) what I AM skeptical of is the depth of the collection, which I value greatly. In that regard, I'm starting to think that Konami's Karaoke Joysound is going to deliver, since musical tastes range wide and far and I don't just want modern hits, I need Abba and the Beetles and 50's oldies and etc.

What is wrong with a good Karaoke game?

Specially if it can get downloadable songs, and you can just buy one game and have one app for it?  Sounds like a win.

There is nothing wrong with a good Karoke game. The problem I and other people have with it is that this game is not really a reason to buy the Wii U and the core audience does not care about this when watching the press conference.

"no lead in our zepplin"... what?  Nice vid.  I have to agree that this isn't a reason to buy or just in general a system seller app.  However, this fills a niche that Nintendo has created by increasing the people that have started to play video games thanks to the Wii.

There needs to be a devoted video series of just Neal doing karaoke!

Oh yeah, and the game looks okay.

Looks like I signed up for the review for Sing in this video somehow. I have a mild knack for reading lyrics to mild rhythm of songs I'm not familiar with.

On a related note: We have some freaking awesome plans for Wii U launch coverage. Hopefully everything will work out with it, but hoo boy, if it does. I'm excited.

The mic in the GamePad probably isn't suited for that kind of voice pick-up. The singer is supposed to stand next to the TV, and this would presumably be in a party environment. A dedicated microphone would only pick up the singer's voice, while the GamePad would pick up anything in the area.

There is karaoke everywhere.  As long as the Song list is expandable I could see this easily being an excuse for a bar or a family joint to buy a WiiU.

My 8 year old daughter really wants this and that makes sense.  Almost every show that is on Disney or Nickelodeon seems to have some of the actors singing in the show. Its Hannah Montana to the 10th power.  If Nintendo markets this right it could be huge for tween girls wanting to be like their favorite stars.

The exapndability of the song list is what worries me. That's why I'm seriously looking at Joysound for the Wii instead.
