I'm definitely getting Zelda, Mario Kart and Super Mario Odyssey day one. I'm most likely going to get Arms and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 day one but those aren't 100% definite.

I'm surprised many people are getting Zelda on the Wii U. I own a Wii U and I would definitely get it on that if I wasn't getting a Switch but I'm looking forward to playing it on the go and elsewhere other then at home so personally I rather get the Switch version not to mention that version is supposedly going to look better and probably will have better load times I'm assuming.

I preordered both consoles back in June. I picked up my Xbox One Day One edition with a free copy of Forza Motorsport 5, a play and charge kit and a day one 1 year Xbox Live subscription with some extra bonuses included on Friday. I'm in the UK so I will be picking up my PS4 this coming Friday 29th. I'm excited about both comsoles but more so for the PS4 so I can't wait til Friday.

Blame Germany and their stupid laws. Nintendo has to follow German laws since Nintendo of Europe is based there.

They don't have to have the same policy throughout the EU but they choose to.

I noticed while looking at a picture of the Wii U Pro Controller that it uses the same mini-USB port as the Dualshock 3 to charger its battery. I was wondering if anyone could confirm for me whether or not the pro controller can work with the charging bases and accessories that go to the DualShock 3? I am just curious as to see whether this will work or not. Thank you for your help.

If its just a physical connection and the chargers are plugged in the USB port of the console there is no reason why they shouldn't. If they use a regular power supply and plug into the wall socket then I couldn't say for sure.

It's a non issue. Nintendo has been doing this since the SNES days and its no doubt due to FCC regulations differing across countries and regions. I swear, people love to find anything to nitpick over the WiiU. It's come down to if a company doesn't disclose every little decision behind all the minutiae that goes into their product, no matter if the reason is federal regulations, the Internet will complain.

Absolute rubbish. It is an issue. What's it got to do with past consoles the SNES included. If this is indeed true its the first time a controller has been region locked. What's it got to do with FCC regulations. There have been portable consoles that have been region free like the Gameboy, DS, DS Lite, Neo Geo Pocket, PSP and PS Vita. What makes the Gamepad any different. It shouldn't be region locked and if Nintendo has done that then that's just ridiculous.

$9.99 would probably make me pull the trigger on this one.

C'mon Nintendo, have a pre-Xmas sale (that ends Xmas Eve ) to reward all the early adopters!!

I think its already discounted for a limited time to celebrate the launch of the Wii U. I don't see them discounting it anymore for a while if at all.

So let's break this down by publisher. I'll miss some publishers and titles, so help me fill it in.

Western:
EA - Mad that Nintendo didn't go exclusivley Orbis for online.
Ubisoft - Big on the Wii U, bringing good support so far.
Activision - They do COD and....?
THQ - Almost dead. Selling themselves on the street corner in hopes of surviving.
2K Games - GTA and...?

Eastern:
Capcom - What's their problem?
Konami - They do MGS and....?
Tecmo Koei- Tekken. Dynasty Warriors. what else?
Square Enix - FF and DQ. That's it.
Sega - Barely Alive. I am getting Aliens/Marines though!

I think the future is more and more indie devs with downloadable titles. Wii U has a decent start there. Look at a game like Trine 2. It may be an indie downloadable title, but it is an A grade game without a doubt. Polished, pretty and lots of content. Maybe even AA.

Tekken is developed and published by Namco.

One problem for the Wii U is that getting some of the same third party games as the other systems, while a good thing, is not a selling point for anyone with a PS3 or Xbox 360.  So the Wii U has Arkham City and ME3.  Big deal.  I can play those on my PS3.  The market for such games is entirely those that were Wii-only last gen.  And no PS360 owner is going to buy a Wii U for those third party games because it makes no sense to buy a new system to play a game you can already play on a system you own.  Only the exclusives will influence a purchase.

And even if the PS360 owner does buy a Wii U for Mario, will he buy Arkham City or did he already buy it when it was brand new?  Usually when a new system comes out, any multiplatform games it gets will be for the new generation.  So the Cube got something like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 which had come out for the PS2 a few months earlier.  That was okay because the PS2 was new enough that a lot of Gamecube owners would not already own one.  Usually the new systems are all released close enough together that a early adopter's purchase would be their first and only console of that generation.  But the Wii U is sharing third party titles with consoles that have been around for an entire generation.  Being a few months late makes a huge difference because those other consoles are so widespread.

Any third party game that is not coming out the same day as it does on the other systems or is not an exclusive is pretty much doomed to weak sales.  The Wii U realistically is supposed to be the start of a new gen but thus far it's really being treated by third parties as a competitor to the PS360.  They should be kicking off their next gen of games on it, but they're not.  They're not really offering anything that deserves to sell well, so it won't, and they'll have an excuse to just not bother in the future.

Very well put and I agree entirely.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: WiiU external hard drive
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:34:46 AM »
Has anyone found a bus-powered drive that works right with the Wii U? Electrical outlets are at a premium for me, and I'd rather not have to take one up with this if I don't have to.

I had read somewhere that those were not recommended by Nintendo...something about the spin rates of the platters affecting the way the Wii U accesses data?

And is it me, or is there no way to just keep the save data on the Wii U internal memory....the Wii U seems to just move everything wholesale onto the USB disk, which is kinda lame, because on the off-chance that my USB hard drive fails one day (which is certainly possible), I'd rather not lose my save data as well as my game file.

I don't think Nintendo have ever said that regards bus powered hard drives. They do recommend you use hard drives that have their own power supply. However they've said USB bus powered drives should work just fine but you may have to use a USB Y cable connected to two of the Wii U's USB ports in order to provide enough power.

I can almost see what they're going for. Preventing late night downloads of mature titles keeps kids from sneaking around when their parents are asleep to buy mature rated games makes sense.

They're not preventing late night downloads. In fact, they're insisting upon them. These games can only be downloaded (according to reports) between the hours of 11PM and 3AM.
Might want to swap the title its says

3AM-11pm not 11PM - 3AM.

I'm wondering if their is some law in an EU member country they are being compliant with and this is a result of the eShop being centralized to the EU region.

Apparently its a German law and as Nintendo Europe is based there they are complying to it. Whether they need to in other countries I'm not so sure. I'm sure there is a way to make those restrictions just in Germany.

The Germans are very strict when it comes to age restricted content. Even at a show like Gamescom they have restricted access to certain areas. You have to provide official ID showing your DOB when you go in and they give you a wrist band of a specific colour allowing you access to areas appropriate for your age.

It is pretty ridiculous to restrict access on an online service though. They have parental controls built in plus they could restrict it accirding to the country in your settings. In other words just restrict it to German consumers. At the end of the day it should be up to parents anyway. I'm in the UK so it may well affect me - I haven't checked yet. Whilst its an annoyance I'm not too bothered as the Wii U isn't my primary or only console.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:14:28 PM »
But here's the thing. Next year when Battlefield 4 comes out will the Wii U get the same version as the PC/Durango/Orbis or will it get the PS3/360 version of the game.

Will developers take the time out to make a wii U version of a game that's in some weird middle ground. Its worst than the other next gen consoles but better than the last gen.

As well currently epic isn't going to port unreal engine 4 to the wii U (pretty sure it will be possible) you think third parties working on games for the engine slated for Duragno/Orbis launch and early 2014 are going to have the time and resources to port a whole engine to the wii U if engine maker itsself won't do its job properly.

At least the wii U is probably guarntted to have the best version of madden and fifa next year.

What makes you so sure that Battlefield 4 will be released for the Wii U at all ?

Quick question to those that have a WiiU AND The Last Story.  I know the WiiU upscales Wii games but has anyone tried playing The Last Story on WiiU to see if it helps deal with the slowdown issues the game I heard has.  I'm not sure how exactly the WiiU does the emulation but I was thinking that maybe it'll help smooth out the experience and run it at a steady clip.

I wasn't aware the Wii U upscales Wii games. To my knowledge it doesn't.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Getting into E3; How Difficult Is It To Do?
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:15:10 AM »
I managed to get in and went every year from the first one in 1995 up until 2006. In the early days they were less strict and even if you worked as a sales associate in a place like EB Games or PC World you could get in. I worked at EB Games for about three and a half years in San Francisco as well at Software Etc. years ago for about a year. I also worked for a local computer hardware/ software store in San Francisco for about three years. Back then I just filled in the registration form and faxed it in with a copy of a store business card. When I was at the independent hardware store I had my own business card.

After I moved back to the UK in 2002 I worked at GAME for three years and then at an Indy games store for just over a year. The manager at the Indy store got me in for a few years back then. Around 2006 is when they started to get really strict so I haven't been since then. I have gone to Gamescom in Germany a few time since instead as its easy to get in there as its open to the public. I may go again this year.

The problem with E3 in the early years was that there were a lot of teenagers as it was so easy to get in. It was actually really annoying dealing with them. That's why they've got so strict a few years back as its meant to be for people in the trade and journalists only. I hope to get in again sometime. I've still got one or two connections. The problem is its pretty expensive to go from the UK. Gamescom is a lot cheaper.

« on: January 28, 2012, 10:34:09 AM »
Sony revealed today a new, limited edition bundle for the PlayStation Vita that includes a memory card and PSN game.

According to a statement on the PlayStation Blog, a new PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi bundle at launch includes an 8GB Vita memory card, an AT&T DataConnect Pass good for one free 250MB session, and a PlayStation Network game for $299. Sony did not detail what game would be available as part of this bundle.

Didn't say what game though but still not a bad idea to to increase Vita 3G model sales.

The first edition bundle is also now going to include the data connect pass and free PSN game.

General Gaming / Re: PSP Go: Is it worth $100?
« on: December 19, 2011, 05:28:31 PM »

If you really want a download-centric handheld, just wait and get a Vita.  The PSP Go is a P.O.S., both from a functionality and design standpoint.  If you really want a PSP, get a 3000 and a decent ProDuo memory stick for your download titles.  Otherwise, you'll be able to play all the PSP games you'd want to play on the Vita, so save your money.

I have to disagree with your comment that the PSP Go is rubbish. From both a function and design stand point it's far better then the regular PSP's. It's only downside is no UMD slot so all games have to be digital downloads. That is also an upside or it would have been if PSP games had been available as both UMD's and downloads from the beginning and the downloads were cheaper. The smaller form factor and slide design makes it far more practical. It was also too expensive and should have been introduced at a lower price point.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Rumor - Wii U priced in france
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:15:22 PM »
Whilst prices are higher outside the US especially in Europe there is no way it's going to cost €450. Nintendo would be shooting themselves in the foot if they charged that much. I suspect €300 is a more likely price with €350 an outside possibility. Furthermore it's not a case of Sony, Nintendo or any other company purposely ripping people off but more a point of everything being more expensive over here. The cost of living is much higher in general.

I've picked it up for the PS3 mainly because I also wanted the surround sound. I realise it's not as important in a game like this but it's nice to have. I generally leave my Wii for the exclusive games. That said I've not got around to play it yet although I did have a go on it back in August at Gamescom.

There will be a new Mario game for Wii U but it won't be in the same vain as the Galaxy games. I believe it will be a new direction and concept altogether.

I share your frustration. I live in the UK but own mainly North American consoles. I wont go into why right now but there are several reasons. As the Wii along with the 3DS is not region free I have to import all my games. There are very few retailers who will ship North American games here to the UK. The one I have been using on a regular basis for the last nine years is www.videogamesplus.ca in Canada. Anything I order from there typically takes 7 to 10 days to reach me. However they are reliable and have very good customer service although they are a small operation.

Any way I pre-ordered Skyward Sword from them and it was shipped on Thursday of last week which is 3 days before release in the US and 1 day before here in the UK. I had also pre-ordered Super Mario 3D Land from them which was shipped the Thursday before and I received it on Friday which is 8 days later. Judging by that I should get Skyward Sword this coming Friday or 8 days from being shipped. By that time loads of people in the US as well as here in the UK will have already been playing it.

I realise owning mostly US consoles this is something i have to deal with. As PS3 and many Xbox 360 games are region free it's not an issue with them. My PS3 is North American and my US Xbox 360 was replaced for the second time but this time for a UK model. Unfortunately with the Wii and 3DS I still have to import all my games. Anyway if all goes well I'll be playing Skyward Sword next weekend. I've got Mario to tie me down till then.

Yes I played it too in Leipzig recently and was quite impressed by it especially the gameplay using the balance board. Whilst I did prefer Shaun White's Snowboarding this game also makes good use of the balance board and does have the potential to be a great game.

I had a chance to play both this game and Skate It at the German Games Convention in Leipzig and whilst I was impressed by both games I have to say that Shaun White's Snowboarding was a lot more intuitive and fun. Ubisoft may have been guilty of making poor games for the Wii in the past but this certainly isn't one of them and I'm really looking forward to it.

« on: August 17, 2008, 06:55:05 AM »
I'm hugely interested, ever since I played it at Nintendo Australias tour thingy, it's a really good game, it totally reeks of effort. Real fun in multiplayer too.  I'm going to pre-order it (free figurine!) and buy it day 1, been a while since i've done that with a game. It comes out the same day as Wario Land here, what a huge day.

I think de Blob and Wario Land Shake It are going to be my next two Wii games as I don't see anything else worthwhile coming out between now and then.

Is this game at all like Dungeon Keeper?

People did compare it to Dungeon Keeper when the original was first released. As I've never played Dungeon Keeper I couldn't really confirm that myself.

It's more a question of going or not, it wasn't terribly amazing the last time I was there and the train fare and entry fee do add up.

Well I'm staying just 10 minutes walk from the convention center so I don't need to worry about train fare to and from the convention center each day. I also live in London so my overall travel costs are not as high as for someone traveling from the US. The exchange rare is also better for me too as the pound is a lot stronger then the dollar right now.
