TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Learning from E3 about Best Way to Sell Wii U
« on: June 16, 2012, 04:30:05 AM »
@Oblivion
I think you'd be a fool to NOT see the connection between the DS, Wii and the iPhone.

Whether or not Steve Jobs liked games, he saw from the press and public reactions to these devices that this was the way to control future devices. This was the natural next step in interacting with digital media.

And the way the iPhone has screens that you swipe between, with evenly aligned rounded-corner icons representing your programs, that zoom up to fill the screen when tapped? How is that NOT an (admittedly more elegant) imitation of the Wii system menu?

Not saying the Wii and DS are the only devices influencing Apple and Jobs when working on iPhone, but to dismiss any influence would be ludicrous.

Sure, do the spin-control Reggie.

In fact, here, let me help you:

Resistive screens have a much better update-rate than capacitive, providing a better sense of control.

Resistive screens function with firm styluses that have no static charge. You don't need those sloppy, rubber tip thinging that cost a fortune. Use a butterknife if you please.

Resistive screens allow the finger/pen tip to be considerably closer to the image-producing LED layer, improving the connection with the interface.

Resistive screens do no require a ceramic layer, thus redering them lighter and less likely to break.

Resistive screens allow for pressure sesitivity, but, uh... we're not going to do that.. because... you'd break your device, you cretin.

Oh, they're cheaper too? Sure, sure.

What, multi touch can be done with one hand while holding the device in the other? I've never seen that, what is this "iPhone" of which you speak?

You better fix this Riccitiello.
Or Ubisoft is going to outpace you in earnings on Nintendo platforms quite quickly again.

This is a fair an understandable move.

Historically, the hardcore hype machine has never helped Nintendo's sales much anyway, and companies HAVE been copying them quite directly over relatively short time.

Like when the Wii was fully unveiled in summer 2006 and the iPhone showed up half a year later with the EXACT SAME interface philosophy, tilt sensing, and accelerometer. The thing was basically a DS with a Wii inside it, and they're running away with the entire market.

Nintendo is not happy about that development, and right now with the Wii U there are a LOT of smart TV manufacturers looking to get the upperhand on the competition. Copying Nintendo has never been proven a bad idea, so they just might if they're allowed.

They don't want to piss off the ambassadors and other early adopters even further by announcing a new sleek version to be released at the same price of the current model.

And they've lost enough money on the 3DS to not want to bother with new design, production, functionality, packaging and marketing in the first place.

If they are truly more worried about the next actual machine, it seems I'm just going to have to skip on this one then.

When you want a game to look this "realistic" it really breaks it for me to see Connor walk around on tents and awnings with NO stretching of the fabric going on beneath his feet.
Most of these look like they wouldn't even support his weight in the first place. Particularly when he jumps from high places.
I know it's just a game but then they should let it look like a game, or they finish what they started.

Power Tennis has been Nintendo Selects in Europe since the brand was launched, so that's very plausible.

Actually, Nintendo Selects in Europe also includes a whole bunch of Ubisoft's products, like Sports Island, James Cameron's Avatar The Game, and four different Raving Rabbids titles.

TalkBack / Re: NWR Game Club #2: Metroid: Other M
« on: May 01, 2012, 06:13:28 PM »
I will go and play it again, but before doing so I must re-confess that NEVER have I felt this betrayed by a Nintendo product and the gaming press/gaming fans.
Other M has its production value in all the wrong places, being visually uninspired and extremely poorly laid out level-wise, with messy boss fights and a broken, basically non-existent hint/scan/info-system.

I can stomach the ridiculously forced story, but knowing that so much money was spent on CGI and voice work, when the game itself had so many gaping holes is hard on the old innards.

I'll report back after giving it another spin.

I'm bored to tears of the NSMB art direction already.

I am aware Nintendo has sold in line of 30 million copies of both the original New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, so the monetary incentive for direct sequels is there.

Just.. let's not be too grubby. The new audience want's something new too. Roll on New New Super Mario Bros.

The game doesn't look as complete as the DS iteration, so I definitely welcome any additions! :)

Having enjoyed the Japanese version of Elite Beat Agents much more than the English, I'm looking forward to seeing how much difference there is in Rhythm Paradise, though obviously with this game, the song selection remains the same.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's (Non) Reaction to Wii U Rumours
« on: April 12, 2012, 04:39:12 AM »
I still don't think any of us are in a position to say that Nintendo don't know what they're doing, when they're outpacing the competition (except for Zynga and Apple) profit wise.

We CAN look to answer why they're doing as they are, which I think is more interesting, rather than assume that they're out of touch. They have an enormous marketing department, so whatever they do regarding rumors like weak hardware, they must have thought it the smartest move for some reason or other.
Personally, I don't really doubt that the Wii U in some regards may be weaker than PS3/360. The Wii didn't handle shaders quite as well as the first Xbox, and I'm sure if the development kits still run on NintendoWare, shaderprogramming will STILL be an issue to some degree.

The thing about the negative rumors is that it's such a small amount of people who circulate them, and such a small amount of people who care. If Nintendo open their big corporate mouth about the issue, EVERYBODY will have their attention drawn to it. Every fan, every investor, every news site, every potential future costomer.
Better not call attention to the discussion at all, as Nintendo at the moment seem confident that people will be pleased with Wii U's graphical prowess come E3.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's (Non) Reaction to Wii U Rumours
« on: April 11, 2012, 05:08:59 AM »
There is a reason why Nintendo has never announced the specs of the Wii. It is this very reason which makes it all the more troubling that Nintendo is keeping the Wii U specs under wraps, because there is good reason to believe that history is repeating itself.

That's not particularly a worrying scenario, though.

If history repeats itself, Nintendo sells 100 million Wii Us, earning a profit on every single one, while putting out game after game selling 30 million at full retail price.

Do take note.
Nintendo has NEVER publicly announced the specs of the Wii.
Not before its release, not five years after, not in between.

I'm pretty sure this hasn't hurt sales of the thing.
Nintendo's stance is now that graphics are good enough as to where it's useless arguing on numbers. The fans, the press and even some developers get them all wrong anyway.

A multiplatform release of a movie tie-in by a big publisher doesn't really qualify as "shovelware".

I get it.

Nintendo got huge through the American market, and would never give up their status as a publisher of family oriented products. They don't want this discussion with parents.

It's too bad, because I hoped they had changed. That the game is otherwise a gross, semi-repetitive, taste-ridden, Zelda knock-off, can hardly be the reason for the rejection. With all due respect of course, those are not detractors to me, and I dig Super Meat Boy.

I'm tired of everyone and their step brother claiming to be geeks or nerds because it's hip to be smart.
Subsequently the title of this game bothers me more than the game being a poor mans The Incredible Machine.

Though there really should be more games like this.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Demands Take Down of Icon Games's Sales Numbers
« on: January 07, 2012, 04:46:38 PM »
People are making quite a few weird claims here.
Let's get a few things straight.

1) Nintendo cares. They have EVERY reason to care if developers disclose their sales, because

2) the sales are terrible. This cannot be argued. And

3) bad sales will affect other companies willingness to work with Nintendo.

I'm fairly sure "fly like a helicopter" doesn't mean control an actual helicopter. He probably spins his ears in a classic cartoon manner, like Tails from Sonic and Lori from Jazz Jackrabbit.

Anyways, sounds great! The first features many great ideas and visuals, but also sports serious room for improvement.

TalkBack / Re: Telltale Signs Publishing Agreement with Nintendo
« on: August 25, 2011, 04:32:05 AM »
Sam & Max was not their first episodic game; that was Bone, and after that came CSI.

Then Sam & Max entered the scene, and they inarguably made the approach popular, that much is true.

And TellTale not having a publishing deal themselves explains why Sam & Max Season 2 never arrived on Wii; they had to rely on The Adventure Company, who might have felt the first season just didn't sell well enough.

Man, that title sounds more like a Men Without Hats game.

I'd love to see The Safety Dance in a dancing game.

It's good on Wii. Though as most will know, the IR of the Wii Remote isn't at its very best when used for drawing. It works, though, and it's quite a challenge. It will frequently have you feel pretty darn smart for solving problems in new ways.

I think the game could be even more fun on DS with stylus control. Plus, they can go from a 40MB limit to 400MB or more, so maybe there will be some surprises in there, to go along with a supposedly higher retail price.

I see Move is left out.

Not sure anyone will be sad.

At times I felt the orchestra in Mario Galaxy was wasted a bit because they cut away all the highest frequencies to make way for coin noises.
I understand that the soundscape could've been quite messy otherwise, though.

Hopefully the orchestrations in Skyward Sword won't be compromised much, and still facilitate all the dynamic uses of music the series is known for, like on-the-fly blending of battle music and exploration music, notes and instruments added during fights, and so on.
I'd personally rather have MIDI than lose any of these.

TalkBack / Re: Dragon Quest X Not Destined for Wii U After All
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:28:02 AM »
I think it is a fair decision to stick with Wii for now.

The people NOT looking to purchase a Wii U at launch would be very disappointed not to be able to play this game after waiting so long.
Besides, Square-Enix has no idea of how well the Wii U will sell, while Wii has an installed base of almost 90 million. They've continuously stated that the series will come out for the most widely adopted system. Dragon Quest Mosters: Joker 2 is coming out for the DS rather than the 3DS as well.
