WTF is up with the WII U shipments? My local area has the WII U holiday bundle (Splatoon+SSB) as sold out and they don't plan on getting anymore until another 2 weeks? Targets in my area had to throw in voucher's because they didn't even have the minimum number to cover the BF ad? BestBuy was supposed to have a shipment of 40, yet they had only 15?

I noticed shortages as well in our area plus used stores all hanging up flyers offering $150 in credit for used Wii U consoles.

Like Amiibos last year, Nintendo didn't know the Splatoon+Smash bundle would sell this well so they didn't have enough ready. This is one of the reason Nintendo has been able to minimize their Wii U losses after 2013 since they expect the worse for everything Wii U related and ship the bare minimum. So when something Wii U related actual does well, they're caught in these situations where we now have mass shortages of the product.

Hmmm...all of the Target stores nearby have the bundle in stock. Since the games are preinstalled its strange that Nintendo would have a hard time stocking them.My assumption tells me they don't want to keep giving away two of their best sellers.

NPD preview:
- The only Nintendo game in the all-format top 10 is Just Dance. The top selling versions were the Wii U at #2... and the Wii at #1.
- Wii U was flat year over year, which means about 240k units. Given the new games that came out in November, that falls under an absolute miracle, Smash Splat bundle or no.

It's still monster hunting season over in Japan even in the face of a new visual novel prequel and the latest from the minds behind Senran Kagura. Nintendo has announced selling over one million copies of Splatoon and celebrating with a concert.

I'm pretty sure I said something along the lines of, "I'll be surprised if the PS4 doesn't eclipse the Wii U in Japan by the end of the year." Alas, the ink of Splatoon seems to be staving that off until 2016.

not really, Christmas could yield big numbers for PS4 and Wii U both but the gap is closing and within reach if holiday sales are strong. I already have a Wii U and a PS4, it is Xbox One that I am looking at next.

There will not be over 600k more PS4s sold than Wii Us by the end of the year. Just not going to happen, unless I'm misinterpreting what you're saying.

People thought PS4 Japan LTD sales would surpass Wii U's this year and it didn't happen. It's never been a 1:1 comparison, and I've always thought it was silly since PS4 has way more momentum right now, for what it's worth at the end of 2015 Wii U is still the leader at the club house.

The last weeks of the year tend to favor Nintendo, Sony gets a bump in the first week of the year because the older crowd that gets money for New Year's is more amenable to Sony products.

The idea that the PS4 even had a chance of passing the Wii U by the end of this year in Japan was always a joke. The PS4 would have had to literally sold an average of over 50k each week in 2015 to have surpassed the Wii U by the end of the year which it was never going to do given the state of the current Japanese home console market.

I don't think they can overtake them at this point no, but they can get within reach, there is a chance they could do over half a million holiday sales. I am not saying it will for sure happen but there is a chance. Either way them overtaking Wii U is inevitable and not just because Wii U is going to be put out to pasture next year to make room for NX.

People keep saying console gaming is dead in Japan but both Wii U and PS4 keep putting up respectable numbers and are climbing steadily. Maybe Japanese gamers just didn't like Wii as much and held off on PS3 because they were still making PS2 for so damn long over there.

Splatoon and Mario Maker seem to be fueling the Wii U to new interest. These are reasons why I think Nintendo will still wait for the full 5 year cycle to release the NX, at least the home console portion.
