Let us dive down the rabbit hole that is gaming down under, before it has a cardiac arrest and the next of kin takes the throne and ... I didn't actually have a point to all this, so I'm going to move on.

The whole bloody thing is here: http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/article/300491/hardcore_gaming_isn_t_dying_--_it_already_dead but I know you guys want the choice bits.

Quote
One day, you’re happily swanning about in flannel shirts or cargo pants, the next; your favourite trend is yesterday’s fading fad.

Apologies if this guy is stating the obvious to you, dear Reader. I want to hit him in the back of the head for mentioning flannel (which was only popular for Billy Ray, and if you were following Billy Ray back in the day you were a sad, sad person).

Quote
In the context of this article, the phrase refers to all types of gaming other than the ‘casual/party’ genre... which just so happens to be the cause of hardcore gaming's demise.

Uh-oh, I smell an axe grinding. I think someone might have been playing Wii Sports on his lawn (chasing a really long return, perhaps?) and he's snapped.

Quote
As much as games journalists refuse to admit it, hardcore gaming is definitely on the wane, to be replaced by its simpler, party-prone brother (i.e. the other ‘C’ word.)

I don't profess to know everything about everything, but I know here he's talking about **** gaming - the bastard cousin of casual gaming. **** gaming always shows up to the party uninvited, and you're never been able to work out how anyone of your circle of friends knows him, but its always a laugh when he passes out in a bush.

Quote
The sales figures speak for themselves. According to GFK Australia, nine of the 10 best-selling games in 2008 were Nintendo exclusives. Almost all of these were party/casual games, with the top slot held by Wii Fit.

This is ridiculous. I don't want to live in a world where Wii Fit is the best of anything.

Quote
The only non-Nintendo title to break into the top 10 was GTA IV — which only managed to place fifth. Given the hysterical press coverage that game’s sales figures received, you’d expect it to be ranked much higher.

Go **** a doorknob. GTA's release wasn't hysterical anywhere - I'm almost certain the sales figures will show the first week was subpar save for the millions wasted on PR, but lets not go into the realm of fact.

Such is the clout of the Nu N-Gamer.

Wow, how long did it take for them to think that up? I hope they didn't lose sleep over it, because it is a totally ghetto name. Slap a casual group with a nickname straight out of a late-90s-sounding-which-wasn't-even-a-good-hip-hop-era-sounding name and pat yourself on the back.

Quote
While they still pay lip-service to the hardcore contingent, both companies are gagging to emulate Nintendo’s runaway success. They want in on the Nintendo gravy train, and hardcore gaming is about to take a backseat as a consequence.

More head-belting-because-its-so-obvious remarks would go here, but I can't be arsed.

Quote
“We’re moving on now... to look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises. There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.”

Thanks for the tip, Sony rep. You've done Buzz to death, but what else is there? Ratchet and Clank - nope, that's already bombed. Prince of Persia - oh right, not even yours. I'm struggling here, and perhaps he is too becaus he doesn't mention any specific titles. ("We're starting it tomorrow! Seriously! We'll have it on the shelves by Friday!")

Oh, and if they put out another infernal Motorstorm game (hanging out for a real Bonestorm title so I can chant those immortal lines at every game store I can find until I am banned from them all) I am just going to snap.

Quote
With the exception of Final Fantasy XIII and the usual brigade of samey sequels, there are few Triple A titles on the immediate horizon.

This is the point where I reached for a drink to tolerate the stupidity. Triple A titles don't happen overnight, dipshit. And we know third parties are still falling over themselves finding excuses to stall and make shitty titles in general.

But do you know who's to blame for this "sequel overload" that's been happening for the last few generations? Hardcore gamer culture. The Madden-esque vicious cycle of the same game being tweaked (I'm being nice here, they could be lazy and just change the player names and/or race each year), increment the number on the front, and sell a boatload to a willing audience.

Of course, I can hear the retorts now - "I'm not one of those fans! I only buy the good titles! I heart Square!" Oh, so you're an elitist hardcore gamer? Doesn't matter. If you didn't buy Madden I'm betting you lined up for MGS4 on day one. Same ****, different day.

I'm actually talking to no-one in particular, but think about how many games in your library have a number or a year next to it (and no, PNO3 doesn't count, but you should shut up for different reasons) before you claim to demand quality games. And don't give me this "good franchises are good franchises" argument, because I played through BG&E again last week and it was probably the most fun I've had with a game in the past couple of years.

And don't even get me started about FFXIII - that basket case of a game won't make 2009 anywhere.

Quote
Mark our words, the PS4 and XBox 720 will have full-blown motion control schemes — and hardcore gaming can only suffer as a result.

Ho ho ho! Such rage, such insight.

Let me put it this way - both of them won't have "full-blown motion control schemes" next gen. Remember the Sixaxis? Remember Lair? Of course you do. Think real hard about whether they can get the combination of hardware and software just right, so that you don't get devs complaining about shitty platforms and gamers complaining about shitty products. You still reckon they'll both do it?

Meanwhile EA is complaining about the MotionPlus being too accurate (uh, unless I misheard Bill or Mario, I can't even remember my source on that), technology that is available here and now and gaining traction (I'll still call it waggle, I don't care about being cool anymore).

Quote
It's time to welcome our Nu N-Gamer overlords.

At this point I can't help but conjure a mental picture of Yamauchi crossed with that Thriller clip. Combine that narrator talking about hardcore gamers roaming downtown Tokyo and after the "plot" of the movie is done the next hour or so is Yamauchi strangling prostitutes with a Wii nunchuck. I think it could be a decent movie.

So if Joe Blogger is already predicting doom, are we past the point of no return? Is there no way back to a world where gaming is an anti-social habit? Or does the hardcore gamer have to grab their ankles and think of happy things while casual gaming has its way with the industry.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just a angry guy at a keyboard. I have less merit than the guy in the original article (unless he doesn't get paid for it, in which case I like to think I'm better than him).

Among the projects Interplay has said it wants to develop are sequels to Earthworm Jim, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK, provided it can find the financing.

The real question here is: "Where are the VC EWJ games?" Of course this all depends on Interplay getting funding (they were close to bankruptcy but seem to be alive today in some form) but if you want to satisfy the fans then a walk down Nostalgia Lane is the easy way to do that.

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto tells me to wait five years...
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:17:48 PM »
GoNintendo cites a German article which says Miyamoto thinks everything will be awesome in five years.
Quote

Nintendo’s resident genius Shigeru Miyamoto thinks that things are just getting started with the Wii. He made a comment about the future of the Wii, and it leans towards some major long-term support for the platform.

Miaymoto says that the Wii will be a lot easier to use in 5 years. There is a lot of room for improvement, and some major updates could come from new Wii channels. Apparently Nintendo has some pretty interesting ideas

Firstly: Five years is an awful long time. How about some more short-term improvements, Shiggy? Third-party support, hard drive addon (i won't lie, i loathe memory cards) better online platform plans. These tangible things will help much more than "promises" and new channels.

Second: Is this because Sony is still waiting to officially start the true next-gen race? I remember them spouting off some comments about the PS3 having a lifespan of 10 years or more, but I didn't think Nintendo were interested in that race.

What does everyone else think?

Nintendo Gaming / 50 playable characters? BYO salt.
« on: August 22, 2007, 01:16:58 AM »
Insert token "grain of salt" comment. I haven't said this is gospel but it doesn't look like some kid photoshop'd some Melee graphics onto a TV screen to me.

Floating around Digg. Struck me as odd on three counts:

~ The arrangement of the character icons. Why not simply 5 by 10 and make the icons larger? Considering how many of the characters are locked in the screenshot, that bottom row doesn't look all that impressive.

~ The number of characters unlocked is minimal. So be prepared to slave over single player mode for a while (melee, ugh, talk about repetitive)

~ The menu isn't a huge change from the original. Maybe its not as important as the actual game but come on, throw some fancy stuff in there.

The controller icon is nice though.

General Gaming / ITT we discuss Dyack's vision

Its funny because he thinks the Wiimote is irrelevant.

It could be that we take longer because of the current market, but I would actually say the Wii, in most cases, if you take away the input device, it's really similar to the GameCube, and so they've got a single piece of hardware, and the question to ask is 'would that piece of hardware work on the 360?'

EDIT: There's more pages!

Which is the same as when you think about buying a DVD player, or the same as buying an automobile, quite frankly. There's Porsches, and there's Minis, or whatever.

Internet bandwidth is absolutely limitless - it's just as fast as your GPUs or your CPU. What happens is there's no hardware. Imagine it being so small you can't even see it any more, and all you really have then is your Internet piped to your service provider and that's Microsoft Live.

Lets throw practicalities aside for a brief moment. He's claiming that bandwidth, not hardware, is the solution?
Forget the fact that you need a box to receive input and send signals to your eyeball via a television.
Forget the fact that companies or developers have to host the server farms to deal with thousands of concurrent connections associated with running an online game.
Forget the fact that peer-to-peer traffic is choking the internet.

Guess what's left over - a cable. Good for asphyxiation when you can no longer take this depressing world that Dyack has dreamed up.

And yes, I still think that Dyack is batshit insane (yes, the NWR interview assists with this proof).

Even if they were pouring all of their profit from Windows into the XBox, they wouldn't for long- Microsoft didn't get to be the richest corporation on the face of the earth by pumping money into something that won't return, and you don't make more money by throwing what you have away. If the XBox doesn't start making money, Microsoft will drop it, simple as that- it has nothing to do with how much profit they're getting from other divisions.

« on: June 01, 2007, 10:09:53 PM »
Ahahahahaha, now that I have your attention, the title is a lie.

Pietriots.com is a venture started by the Aussies that you know and love from NWR (well, the cool ones, the others aren't around anymore). We reminisce about the failure that was the Aussie thread every day, and we've been scheming from the day that thread died to create a domain where we can post whatever we want. The Aussie board was fine for a while but now we're looking to venture into the domain of shenanigans and ribaldry.

Its currently being run off my internet connection so if you hit it hard enough I reckon it will fall over. Trust me, its very easy to throttle an Aussie connection - the kangaroos can only run so fast when they've got packets in their pouch. If you guys are interested in interacting with us on a regular basis (we've got a lot of ideas to unveil, most of which will be posted directly on the site rather than this thread) then post here and let us know. Currently we can't be bothered with opening up the place to your Joe Gas Station users but if there is enough interest then we're more than happy to bring on the masses.

I'll give you guys a bit of a teaser: the Pokemon Tour is heading  around Australia in early July. Yes, a NAL event. As rare as it is (four years - Termin8 covered it), it certain is a controversial event. Well, there's not as much snaking, but you know what I'm talking about. Like that guy who pulls out an ice move on the hope of freezing and pulls it off. Yeah, that kind of bullshit.

So that is our venture. Initially it is not going to compete with the likes of NWR (lawl we don't want to moderate forums) or GoNintendo (we don't want to be bearded baldies and have no life at all) or even IGN (although I still want to punch Cam Shea in the face - oops, Aussie joke). But we're going to have some fun with it - talking about things other than games is definitely on the cards.

PS: I'm aware of the rules regarding advertising. But considering I'm not some sort of fly-by-night poster and that the Pietriots are better than any of the other spammers that have frequented recently (except for Garmin guy, he wasn't from here but he was highly amusing!). So do your worst, because the cost-benefit analysis I did for this post over a few beers indicated there was nothing to lose!

EDIT:

In my wisdom I didn't even add in a link to click. What's up with that? Its been fixed right here

And I expect the other Pietriots to come out endorsing this site, maybe they'll tease you further with information. Or maybe not!

18
Alright, this has happened way too much lately and I'm sick of it.

Stop sending me private messages asking for matches.

Its great that you worked out how to use private messages (or got banned, its all the same to me) but take that bit of intellect and build upon it.

Did I leave a Friend Code in that thread? No
Did I say that I have Pokemon Pearl or Diamond? (it is Diamond right? Not Sapphire or Ruby or Fire Red or Leaf Green?) No
Do I have any intention to get this new Pokemon game? No

I don't even have a DS.

So think twice before you click that padlock next to my post. I'm ignoring all these requests at the moment but if they don't stop I will act. And considering that I'm seeing lots of IM usernames and email addresses posted freely on the site, the biggest limitation will be creativity.

PS: I realise the irony of posting this in the Smack Talk forum given that we have a problem with users not reading/posting in the right threads. Sue me.

Alright, sounds like voting closing. No cavalry or bandwagon to save me so I'll start this up.

Until Khush starts the next day I won't talk, but I will highlight what Khush said when he was planning the game.

Quote

Revealing someone's role after you are out of the game.

If you are eliminated and then give away someone's role, (i.e. Mafia member reveals a townie player's identity or townie reveals a mafia player's identity) the team that was hurt by the information gets to immediately kill 3 people of their choosing in retalition. Do ont think you can create a loophole of this rule by hurting someone on your own team (i.e. Mafia member reveals another mafia member's identity). In this case, you are stupid.

Giving out information.

If you wish to tell the players of the game a message, you have a couple of legal channels to do so. One, you can post this information in the voting thread or two you can send a private message to players. You can not, however, create another account and use it to hide your identity while giving out information. If you want to say something, you must accept the responsibility of being known as saying it.

So be careful of what you post here. If you are alive, I'd stay away from here. And besides, it gives the dead people a chance to speculate on things.

Seeing as how the PS3 has wrapped up its launch in Europe and Australia, it is interesting to see that a surprising lack of demand for the systems as well as pathetic launch events from both sides of the world.

Lets discuss what the hell happened. Did Sony not bring enough DJs to the launch night? Were the peons too ignorant to not notice a good deal when they see it? Did the French police watch 300 before they started their work patrolling the Paris PS3 launch?

If you feel that the PS3 is worth the investment currently, then jump to its defense, with guns-a-blazing. I'm sure someone here has bought a PS3, and would love to rub it in my face as being the best thing since sliced bread.

If you feel that the PS3 isn't worth it, then tell me why it was a hilarious disaster. Hell, even 1up can say nice things about the PS3. Surely I jest!

Oh yeah, your personal opinion doesn't have to match your post. Hell, your posts doesn't even have to be correct. Just argue an opinion and lets see who wins.

22
Lawl, analysts. But what's really interesting about this one is that he claims the DS could be an even bigger seller than the PS2's 115 million+

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15549

Quote

This comes from DFC's latest report on the portable gaming market, which the firm predicts will exceed $10 billion in worldwide revenue this year, led by the DS. DFC said that the PSP will "establish a solid position in the marketplace" but that much of the Sony portable's fate will depend on how much effort Sony Computer Entertainment decides to put into promoting the platform over the next few years.

I took this to the most unilateral source of right and wrong googlefight and found:

DS failure
3,810,000 results
defeats
PSP failure
1,130,000 results

PS3 failure
1,190,000 results
defeats
PSP failure
1,130,000 results

PS2 failure
1,140,000 results
defeats
PSP failure
1,130,000 results

Moral of this thread: PSP failure is less likely than the PS2 failure. And we all know how badly the PS2 failed. Now go and put all your money on the PSP, its my "Lock of this Generation!" I'll post a giant lock later to show you just how serious I am about this.

Oh dear, this is too amusing to be a serious news article. Turns out Jack is not only pro-families but pro-smiting.

He's responded to a lawsuit from Take Two to stop Jack from interfering with the release of GTA4 and Manhunt 2. Message follows:

Quote

Dear Gamers and Gamer Publications on the Internet and Elsewhere:

I have been praying, literally, that Take-Two and its lawyers would do something so stupid, so arrogant, so dumb, even dumber than what they have to date done, that such a misstep would enable me to destroy Take-Two. With the filing of this SLAPP lawsuit last week, my prayers are finally answered.

This lawsuit, filed in US District Court for the Southern District of Florida, is, without a doubt, the single dumbest thing I have ever seen any lawyers do in my thirty years of practicing law--while in continuous good standing to do so with The Florida Bar, I might add, the shock radio and video game industry's efforts notwithstanding.

I encourage folks to read Psalm 35, a Psalm of David, which is brilliant in its entirety (since God Himself wrote it), but for those who don't own a Bible or who think their hands will catch on fire if they touch one, here is the salient portion that applies to this lawsuit:

7 For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit,
which without cause they have digged for my soul.

8 Let destruction come upon him at unawares;
and let his net that he hath hid catch himself:
into that very destruction let him fall.

9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD:
it shall rejoice in his salvation.

The pit Take-Two has dug for itself will be patently clear next week when I strike back. Oh, and by the way, the entire Take-Two management and board will be gone on March 23, so this pit-digging comes at a very bad time indeed.

Amen, and Praise be to God Almighty, maker of Heaven, Earth, and yes, the maker even video games. Jack Thompson

NWR Forums Discord / Mafia 2.0 - Signup Time
« on: February 22, 2007, 11:38:15 PM »
Ok guys, since there was pretty much a thumbs down to my game idea, this will be a regular game of Mafia. I'll post roles in the next few days, but it will be largely based on numbers. So signup, and let me have some fun with this. You'll love it, guaranteed.

Gametime starts on the 5th of March, 0800 GMT. For future reference, this is 0300 local US time, 1700 local Toyko time. Voting will be done on a 24 hourly basis.

Signup below. I'll post the game info when I make it up - you guys should know what to expect. If not, just shoot me a message.

If you signed up and wish to change your account (for those who got behind the concept) just PM me. I can be subtle about it all.

The theme for this mafia game will be Politicians Versus Peons

Voting will occur each day, and mafia will be able to perform events "at night" - that is, the time after the vote is closed. So both sides must get their actions in before the close of voting each day.

Time to flesh out some roles then:

Working on current numbers, there will be a 3 person mafia.

George Dubya - The Godfather - for a Texan, he's a terrible shot. But he's got the power of the Coalition of the Willing and the UN to play with, so if he calls for a hit, it happens.

His role - calls in hits and can delegate responsibility each night to a member of his group (or take it himself). Hits occur on every even night, that is night 2, night 4, and so on.

Kofi Annan - The Investigator - he's a diplomat by trade, and by night he's also an investigator. While he may not be understandable to the West when he speaks, he knows more than you think.

His role - able to investigate people on odd nights. That is, night 1, night 3, and so on.

Tony Blair - The Doubter - while he was always a staunch advocate of Dubya, these days he's not sure that he's on the right track.

His role - at a time of his choosing, he will inform me of his alleigances. He can say whatever he wants before and after this, but once he makes up his mind then he cannot change his decision. If he chooses to side with the Peons, then the mafia cannot win until he is dead. I will only inform the people of his decision when one side wins.

Politicians Victory Conditions - the Politicians will win if any of their members are  alive while all Peons and Osama are killed.

Osama -  the Suicide Bomber - the mortal enemy of the West. But he has a weakness for British romantic comedies that only Tony Blair can exploit. Is not aligned with either the Politicians or the Peons.

His role - his death will sacrifice and other people depending on the way he is voted out.

If it is a public vote - then the last three people who voted for him will die as well.
If it is a mafia hit, then the person who called in the hit will die, unless it was Tony Blair, in which case only the bomber will die.

Osama Victory conditions - Osama will win if he can kill the remaining players, Peons or Politicians. Any survivors will void his victory.

Barack Obama - the Librarian - he's a vocal opponent of the reign of the Politicians and would love to see their rule dead and buried (much like the Politicians themselves).

His role - he can investigate a person each night.

Kevin Rudd - the Librarian-in-Training - while being aware of the Politicians and their issues, he is limited in what he can do to assist the peons. Maybe tomorrow he'll be able to save the world, but for today he's just some guy.

His role - he can investigate a person each night. However the information that he receives will always be incorrect. He will think that he is the Librarian.

Nelson Mandela - the Medic - for too long he's been on the road, speaking publicly about the tragedy of apartheid and the futility of violence and becoming a megastar in the process. And now it is time for him to rise again and assist the Peons in their battle against the Politicians.

His role - he can protect a person from death each night - public vote, mafia hit or suicide attempt. However he cannot protect Osama in the event of his death.

Peons Victory Conditions - the Peons will win if there are no remaining Politicians and Osama is dead.

I will build more roles into the game if more people sign up, but I think that's enough key roles for now. So get other people from here to signup and we'll make it into an even bigger game.

The American

Ok guys, since the last Mafia has been wrapped up I figure its time to announce the next game. I will be running this game.

The premise of this game is based around personalities. Some have earned a reputation over the era of Mafia for their excellence at the game. Some have been easy prey for the mob. All this has been based on their PGC/NWR account.

What if you don't know the person that you are voting for? What if you couldn't trust the people in your team?

So for this game, I require that people PM me through a alternative account (or dupe as you trendy people like to call it). The more obscure it is, the better the game will be. And by better, I mean more amusing. You do not have to tell me who you really are, but it would be nice to know who I am building this story around from a gamemaster's perspective.

Anyway, while its a long way off, I'm starting this game on the 5th of March 0800 GMT. The roles will be defined based on the people who sign up - I have a lot of potential roles, but it will be dependent on the number of signups. Obviously, this is very early on, so I'll refine the details as the start date approaches.

So no signups below. Just PM me with your account name and I will start a list of the players in the next few days.
