Wow, so I just found out what exactly Nintendo uses for their sales-tracking:

http://www.siras.com/html/about/about.shtml

Wow, originally it was developed to manage returns, but apparently that level of individual unit of product indentification is pretty much... this IS almost sold-to-consumer tracking. Dear god.

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

From everything I've read, FFXIII is pretty much FFX with better graphics, a worse storyline and 10 times more linear.

What I hated the most about FFX was its "attack A goes on monster B" battle system (every monster I met had a weakness to exactly one attack that would usually instakill it).

I love the fact that Nintendo owns this company.  So if M$ or Sony used it, Nintendo could technically track the sales of the PS3 & 360 as well.

Sony would cheat it's away around the bad news to make it look good. M$ I'm not too sure about. They both share the same HQ town (Seattle), and I heard they don't have that bad of a relationship. Then again, I might be wrong.

Wow, just wow. The latest high budget Final Fantasy game isn't doing much in catching to a remake of a Pokemon game.

Hope all those yen sales can make a small dent in your massive budget Squeenix.

What exactly is Friend Collection, besides the title making it look like it's for the friendless people?

$34? No. The main game would cost that amount, but add in the trading element, side quests, and WiFi connection. It may cost about $150. Five brand new copies sold of the store shelves would easily cover the budget.

I am looking forward to how Final Fantasy XIII does in North America and Europe.

I've obviously never played the game, but I think Friend Collection is like
Animal Crossing meets The Sims using Miis (possibly with a little bit of Facebook thrown in).

There are some videos on Youtube, but for the life of me, I can't figure out the appeal of the game.
But I don't use Facebook, never played The Sims and I'm not really a fan of Animal Crossing.

Which is rather funny considering FFXIII is the most expensive Final Fantasy every made.  I love how everyone acted like Crystal Bearers sales were a disaster and yet, in the end Square Enix will probably end up losing more money off of FFXIII even though it's a million seller, a mark that Crystal Bearers will probably never even get close to reaching.

Wow, FF13 is set to be one of the worst selling 3D console FFs ever. X-2 might even sell better than it.

In all fairness, the PS3 user base is nowhere near what the PS1 and PS2's were so these numbers aren't terribly surprising.  Besides, those numbers will jump considerably once the game makes its worldwide debut.

Actually, those numbers won't jump since this is comparing Japanese sales to Japanese sales. Also, the install base for the PS1 was about the same when Final Fantasy VII came out as the PS3 is. As of November 1996 (2 months before Final Fantasy VII released), the Sony had shipped 4.2 million PlayStation's shipped in Japan (Sony at that time only reported shipped numbers, not sold numbers, and that would be at 6.5 million by the end of March 1997). PS2 was better (it was at 5.94 million in Japan when Final Fantasy X was released). PS3 was at about 4 million sold. So PS1 and PS3 had about the same number sold when their first Final Fantasy game came out.

So basically Final Fantasy VII sold 2 million copies to an install base of about 4.2 million while Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million to a install base of about 4 million. Estimate the actual install base of the PS1 (since that 4.2 is shipped, not sold) and Final Fantasy XIII did sell worse.

But it was outsold by the PS2.

Ah, I miss the good old days when the GBA was still on the charts and humiliated and humbled other systems on occasion, despite being an ancient dinosaur from a bygone era. If Nintendo were still making and shipping GBAs I'm sure they would teach that PSPgo a lesson in humility.

Let's never forget that at launch the GBA was kicking the PS3's ass.
is your sanity...

I realized what those numbers were referring to.  I was mainly looking at total units sold.  It's no secret that the Japanese market (outside Nintendo) has been floundering for years, so I figure when you throw worldwide sales into the mix and an additional platform's user base, the game will end up with generally respectable numbers (despite seeming market fatigue towards Japanese entertainment tropes).
