Help regarding the DS and flying
« on: November 14, 2007, 01:20:40 PM »
I will be traveling to California this weekend from New Jersey.  It's about an 5 hour flight and was planning on bringing my DS, but i began wondering whether or not they'd would let me take it on.  Has anyone ever tried taking their DS on a plane? Was it a pain to go through?  Any help is appreciated.

Didn't they recently pass regulation saying we couldn't even play our DS' on planes? I seem to recall reading that they were going uber hardcore on the in-flight electronics rule...

They did ban DSs on flights for some Japanese airline but I don't think there has been any such ban on any American airline.

I use my DS all the time when I fly.
Heck, I even flew to Tokyo and back (from Europe) and they didn't say anything about it.

How did you bring it on board?  Keep it in your pocket? Or did you leave it in your carry on bag?  I'm just afraid that if i bring it they are going to tell me it's not allowed on the plane, in which case i wouldn't know what to do with it.

Like other electronics, they're going to probably want it in the bin next to your other carry-on items. Shoes, belt, other metal items, toiletries in a quart bag (they do sometimes take issue with non-quart bags), electronic items all go in the bin in the open.

Mine is always in my carry-on (laptop backpack) and I was never asked to remove it from my backpack.

At first I totally read this wrong and thought "you can't use the DS to fly".  Yeah, my brain kind of switched off for a second there.

In July my brother and I flew to San Diego with our DS's in our carry on bags and there was no issue.  Now I left it in the bag when going through the metal detector so it wasn't like I was waving it around the whole time for the whole airport to see.  That's my advice for bringing anything on a plane.  Don't ask.  Don't draw attention to it.  Don't have it out when the security check is done.  Speak when spoken to and don't give any extra information when it isn't asked for.

I was also flying out of Vancouver so it was an international flight if that matters.  I'd guess the security for that would be higher but living in Canada I practically never take a domestic flight in the US so I don't know the comparison.

And you're allowed to use it on the plane?  The first and last time I flew on a plane was about 9 years ago when GameBoy Color was out and the Pokemon fad was going crazy.  I wasn't allowed to play it while the plane was in the air.  Said it messed with the radio waves.  Is that still how it is?

I think it is perfectly ok to use on a plane, you just need to turn off Wireless functionality.

During takeoff/taxi/landing they might tell you to turn it off though..

Pictochat is great on planes.  I know it's probably exactly what they dont want us using, but drawing back and forth with some stranger somewhere on the plane is a blast.

I live in the UK and fly to Canada where my parents live now and I usually spend most of the flight either playing my DS or watching stuff on my macbook (go airline adapter!). Never had an issue with it. They always say about not using electronics during take off and landing which I usually comply with.

I'v never had an issue with using them and I don't think you will either. Hell I bought a couple of DS games this week just because I know I'm going on a long flight again to Canada in a few weeks.
