@kobeskillz - Haha, sorry if I made you hyperventilate.

I don't have a Cube anymore, just a Wii, hacked. With emulators, it's basically my main classic game machine, and it's likely I'll be playing Lufia 2 on it despite owning the cartridge, since composite is still better than RF.

But yeah, I'll also be playing Cube and some Wii games on it. I don't mind the lack of progressive scan: it's actually how I experienced all my games back in the day. I've never owned a 480p CRT TV and never had inputs more modern than composite, so. I'm used to it.

And yes, lack of lag is a big deal for me. Games like Mega Man haven't felt quite right on the two HDTVs I've owned.

It also makes sense to hook up the PS2 to that TV, as the alternative so far had been leaving it in a rubbermaid bin. And I've got stuff like the Mega Man X Collection for it, so…

Gimme.

But someone else said that! I just said it looked good and was based on Sonic, which is true!

And don't worry, I always skip story if I don't care for it.

79
Also, **** you Gui I hope Freedom planet shows more of it's treasure heritage and other 16 to 32 bit era heritage and that you play the game on classic mode because I don't wanna hear Gui bitch about a story that's purposefully paying homage to Sonic Adventure style storytelling and is 100% OPTIONAL BECAUSE THE DEV KNEW THAT SORT OF THING WASN'T FOR EVERYONE AND IT SHOULDN'T RUIN AN EXCELENT GAME FOR PRETENTIOUS PRICKS WHO COME IN WITH A BAD EXPECTATION.
Haha, I forget what I said. Is this because of "for being based on bad games"? Mostly it's James who picked that ball and ran with it!

TalkBack / Re: Star Fox Zero (Wii U) Review
« on: April 25, 2016, 02:15:42 PM »
I had a rough time initially with the controls for the Walker and the Landmaster, especially against the Titania boss. And the Andross fight was infuriating. But I've since opened up a bit more of the game and gotten used to the controls a bit more, and it's fair to say Zero has become my favorite entry in the series.

It might pale in comparison to something like the Ratchet and Clank remake but some of the environments are quite pretty. A lot of the boss fights have been imaginative and fun, and as Greg said on RFN, the all-range mode has never been this fun.

And despite the controls taking a while to getting used to, they really got the Star Fox flight physics right (while games like Assault simply felt "off").

The sign of a great game: while away from it, I can't stop thinking about it and looking forward to exploring the levels and mastering them.

It's awesome.

The titles on Wii such as Rondo of Blood or Adventure Rebirth are also permissible.

The comparison with Soul Hackers killed my enthusiasm for the game, but we'll see. If playing on Easy difficulty allows the game to be "still tough but fair" while eliminating the need to create spreadsheets for dialogue options with the hundreds of demons in the game, then maybe.

But then again, I might just go and finally actually play the RPGs in my backlog, which includes Nocturne.

And heyyyy, a sale for Mercenaries was just announced, right on cue.

We had been mostly praising the game in the months leading to the spoilercast so I basically unloaded everything about the game that bothered me. So naturally I sounded more down on the game than I actually was. There was a lot to enjoy while exploring Mira. I just needed to vent on the stuff that bugged me.

Admittedly, I might have played a bit more of it, or playing through it faster than I would have liked, due to the spoilercast we promised.

It's surprisingly easy to sound negative on a podcast. At least one person managed to come away from the last retroactive thinking we didn't like Viewtiful Joe, when I thought we were all very positive about it.

I almost did mention a Donkey Kong 94 maker, but then changed my mind, plus it reminded me of Mario vs DK series and I mentioned the level editor in those games instead.

Yeah, I meant the VC. I don't have a Vita, although I was aware they ported the game to that platform.

87
The "game is already completed" so it shouldn't be touched argument seems arbitrary, in the current context: it was released in one region, drew criticism, and Nintendo had time to respond to that criticism within the time they gave themselves to localize the game. There's no real reason a company shouldn't use that localization window of opportunity to take in criticism and respond accordingly.

As for the "only the creators can change their work" argument, the people involved in making this chapter of this franchise, worked for Nintendo. It's Nintendo's intellectual property, Nintendo paid their salaries, and Nintendo commissioned the work. If Nintendo later sees content they oppose and choose to change it, it's their call.

88
Actually the criticism has already happened, has been judged to be valid, and has led to a positive change.

Things went right, here.

I really, really didn't know what to ask for Christmas, so I thought why not. A "free" solution to stop having to move the TV stand and fiddle with HDMI cables every time I want to play a game seemed like a good idea, especially since my laptop and its power adapter are HUGE and a pain to move around (I know, I know). I also half-planned to perhaps build a tower PC if Steam Link worked well.

There's still a chance that the whole setup will work better if I install a 5 GHz card in my laptop.

And I could see myself playing something like Her Story or 80 Days with Karen on her Surface with the touch screen, while projecting it on the TV.

The hell with your "Pumpkin Zone isn't really scary" BS, Jonny.

I always saved that zone for last. It stressed me out!

This is a silly reason to not get the game. The Podcast like RFN fashion concentrated more on what’s missing/wrong than what the game does right which is a WHOLE  lot.
Whoa, is that true? That's not how I remember the discussion going at all! I need to listen to it.

I like Layton. I played the first three games over a week-end each. But the early Layton sections of LvsW are really bad. Very wordy and annoying dialogue, and mediocre puzzles.

Yeah, I just got the sense from the question that pacing and brevity were important to Kevin. So I named some of the shortest, least padded RPGs I know. That pretty much disqualifies the Final Fantasy series. :-p

Hahaha, well I've actually hoped I'd stumble upon a copy of the PS2 Romancing SaGa remake. And I did, at PAX East last year, but $50 was too much to ask.

I personally welcome all feedback, positive or negative. We put RFN out there for public consumption so naturally people are going to have opinions good and bad, and have topics/features/hosts/guests they like and don't like.  Even non-constructive trolling usually has a grain of truth to it.
Right. Although I wonder how much of the distaste some of the people here are expressing rather rudely at some of us individually is just confirmation bias. One of us says one thing one person doesn't like and all of a sudden, that person is an asshole forever. Maybe try to be more impartial as a listener?

I record the podcast, I edit it, and I listen to it afterwards. James has a fairly different personnality from mine, and yet I honestly don't understand how he could get under your skins like that. Yes, bring up Ubisoft, Sega, Sonic or Metroid and you might hear from him, but it's usually one line in a two hour podcast. And in a lot of cases, like when we're discussing "Metroidvania" games during New Business, he's not saying anything at all. So I dunno. Sure, we can all try to not rely on the same jokes over and over again, in order to be a more entertaining, better podcast. But sometimes running jokes work, too, as long as they don't take over the show. I think we're doing fine.

Taking the opportunity to defend myself: in the last 20 episodes, I spoke about 7 2D platformers. Cloudberry Kingdom, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Wario Land 3, Chariot, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Xeodrifter, DK King of Swing. Of those, I'm not sure which ones I'd consider "generic", as they all have something unique going on. And while I know we all like to joke that I love platformers unconditionally, I also know that I was critical of all of these.

That's seven games since November. If that's too much for you: tough. This is a Nintendo podcast. You're gonna have to hear about some 2D platformers.

We record weekly, so there is some pressure to have something new to discuss every week. 2D platformers are usually short, easy to get into, plentiful on the eShop, often have couch co-op, and I like playing them so yeah, I'm gonna talk about them critically. I record this show for myself, and for people who actually like Nintendo games, after all. If others don't care for it, then I'm probably doing something right.
