Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 97: Mime Language

As an aside, I wish we could sometimes hear some non-Nintendo songs occasionally. Perhaps a special episode? Otherwise, are there any similar podcasts "name the tune" style podcasts that feature other systems?

I was first introduced to game 3 by some friends in high school. It is honestly not a great game, but it is pretty unique and so it is interesting at least until it starts to wear thin. The first "fish" stage was my favorite. Not only could I move freely in two dimensions, but we thought it was pretty funny that after attacking the jellyfish, they turned into hams that you are supposed to eat... but I thought pigs had not evolved yet! I also like the music from that stage (which you played during your discussion), which is probably why I requested the game. I just did some research and found out that the composer for this game is the same guy who does the Dragon Quest games. If I had ever played any of those it might mean more to me. I did kind of force myself to finish the game two or three years ago, but it was probably not worth it.

I have no idea what EVO stands for. Obviously, I think they just shortened the word "evolution" and wanted to make it look more interesting and so made it look like an acronym or something.

Sorry, I don't know how to hide the text for spoilers.

I like the live version of this. Does anybody know of anything similar to this, a name-this-tune for video games? I would rather like to see other consoles included too.

I really, really liked the first song of the first game. And to suggest it was from Mega Man was hilarious.

I have made game suggestions in the past, but I am often unsure if the web forms work and if they are received. I don't want to suggest multiple games simultaneously.

"Underwhelming map designs"

Is this referring to the "overworld(s)", or the levels, or what?

So, was that compliment of my forum name sarcasm? Because, I think the name is kind of dumb. It's a ten year old relic, and I only keep it for consistency.

Shining Force has always stood out for me as the only game I am aware of that combines strategy RPG type battles and traditional "exploration" type gameplay (i.e. walking around towns and the overworld). Games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics are nothing but a bunch of battles strung one after another, which becomes tedious after awhile. Unfortunately, neither the combat or the exploration in this game are really up to par with other RPGs. It is as a whole package where I think the game stands out.

I also like the music.

I went for Donkey Kong Country 2 because it is the only one that I own, haven't finished, and want to finish. It also reminded me of this video:

The main reason I sometimes consider this to be my favorite game is because of the multiplayer. I can think of no other game that really shares this formula. Crystal Chronicles was mentioned as a spiritual sequel of sorts but the small amount of time I spent with that game did not make me yearn for more, and the hardware restrictions ensured that I would play it no more even if I wanted to.

Of course, nowadays nobody would have both the time and will to play through any significant chunk of the game with me. Since I know the game is not nearly as good as a single player experience, I am not dedicating any time to it at the moment.

The soundtrack is still one of my favorite, but in retrospect I agree with a lot of the complaints. The dialogue is pretty poor, and the story suffers as a result. The path finding is terrible. I once remember getting stuck after rounding a corner and jumping down a ledge. One of my characters didn't make it around the corner, and I couldn't go back to get him. Unfortunately, he was a ghost and I was out of reviving capabilities, so I couldn't switch to him either. I don't recall if I had to reset or if I was able to fling myself back up the ledge with one of the charged weapon attacks. Either way it was annoying.

Somebody mentioned the similar graphical style to Chrono Trigger. I actually bought Chrono Trigger under the assumption that it would have similar gameplay, because the screenshots of Chrono Trigger looked similar. I was initially disappointed, but not for too long...

That second one has a GLaDOS vibe to it.

I have a low tech suggestion. Buy tape recorders. They are much more reliable. If your audio recording onto the computer fails, you can simply play back the tape later to recover your lost conversation.

I agree with some of the comments above. While certainly an excellent game and innovative on several fronts, I think the game is a bit over rated. I recall even losing interest in in half way through, and only coming back to finish it some months later. It made the transition to 3D as well as any series could hope to, but I still find Zelda more at home in 2D. I would like to see a new 2D Zelda game, with as much time and dedication put into it as would be put into any new AAA game. And I'd like to see it on a console. On a disk.

The most interesting thing I noticed is that there seemed to be five remotes working on the same system at once during the Wii Music demo.

I've never liked the concept of paying for a company to modulate an electric field down a cable for me, and I can pretty confidently say that I have never had to. I would much prefer physical copies of games, that I can trade or sell or keep indefinitely. I am sure game publishers (and music publisher, and movie studios) would rather sell me a modulated electric field, but if they want my money they will have to give me a physical copy.

You should also be aware that response time is not related to lag. It is confusing terminology, but response time measures how fast a pixel can change colors. A lower response time will thus supposedly cause less blurring. Actual lag is never reported by the manufacturer, from what I've seen.

Some HDTVs are really bad when it comes to lag, especially if you are using an SD input.

I recently bought a new TV, and I specifically stayed away from this technology because it is supposed to contribute to lag, which is by far the greatest bane of playing games on an HDTV. I can recommend Samsung, though. I actually brought a Gamecube into stores and tested lag on several TVs, and Samsung LCDs in general seemed to have the lowest level of lag, along with the Toshiba LCDs. This is important for time crucial games like Guitar Hero or Smash Bros. There are some new technologies like strobing LED backlights that are supposed to give the same effect without the lag.

The first game is one of my favorites, so I called that within a few notes.
I would have guessed the second game, but in my opinion you skipped over all of the most recognizable songs from it.
I could actually recognize that the music in the third game was from the Game Gear, which confused me for a while, being a Nintendo podcast and all.

Pertaining patents - while I'm not a patent attorney or anything, I believe you are slightly mistaken on how a patent works. If I recall correctly, a patent does not give you the right to produce something, it merely gives you the right to restrict others from producing it. If I am right, this means that your patent CAN in fact "inherit" from a Nintendo patent, as long as it expands upon it in a sufficient way (where "sufficient" should be replaced with some precise legal definitions that I am not too familiar with). If you are granted this patent, you cannot actually produce said product if it is protected by Nintendo's patent, but you CAN stop Nintendo from producing it, and try to get them to license the rights to your product.

NWR Feedback / List of Radio Trivia games
« on: January 19, 2008, 05:00:57 PM »
I like to suggest games for the Radio Trivia podcast, but I don't want to suggest games that have already been used. My memory is not good enough to remember all the games used previously, which is why it would be nice to have a sort of "cheat sheet" that would list all the games for each podcast. It would also be nice if it had the games from the non-podcast trivia (which I wish still occurred, by the way). Is it possible for somebody to put this together?

I'd prefer a headset that somehow plugged in between the remote and nunchuck. Nothing else to recharge, please.

I'm glad you had the good taste to use my recommendation. I never played the game back when it was released. I bought it about five years ago after playing it at a Funcoland.
The game is not the best of it's kind, but having played many games in the genre, I can say that it is probably above average, both in the gameplay and music departments. The story is about on par with any other game in this genre.
One of the songs was remixed by 'virt', who also did the music for Contra 4.

My impression of this game so far is that it is unnecessarily difficult due to the small screen size and buttons of the DS. I only have the original DS so that might make a difference, but I cannot even manage to beat the first level. I'm no stranger to Contra - I've beaten the original many times.

The Temple was my favorite level in Melee. I especially like the new remixed Great Palace theme, too.

Thanks. I am able to change it now, but I am a bit worried that it will just happen again. Whoever is paying for this forum software should rethink the investment. I am pretty sure there are free alternatives that aren't so finicky about editing.
