Nintendo DS Sells Well in Japan

Nintendo is near its goal of a million units worldwide.

Nintendo announced today that it has sold roughly half a million units in Japan, bringing global sales of its new handheld over its goal of one million units.


Japanese gamers purchased 460,000 Nintendo DS since its release five days ago (81% of the 570,000 systems available), while another 50,000 units are still being reserved for customers at retail outlets.


Nintendo spokesman Ken Toyoda expressed Nintendo's satisfaction with Nintendo DS's performance in Japan, stating that some unsold units are to be expected and can be partially attributed to retailer's control of the product supply.


Reuters notes that Sony aims to ship 500,000 PSP units in Japan when it launches next week—Nintendo and Sony will likely have similarly-sized Japanese user bases at the year's end.

Sony reportedly bumped into production problems, and will only have 200,000 units ready for the Japanese launch, with 500,000 ready by "the end of the year" (which might be either December 31 or March 31). And that's just Japan. Other regions don't even have an officially confirmed launch date or price yet.

Nintendo's got 570,000 on launch day, even more by Dec 31, and is supposed to have 1,000,000 (and that's an old number) by March 31 in Japan. Plus they've already got their American launch.

That's not a production problem. It's only a money "problem" in the sense that they don't want to hemorrhage any more money than they need to.

Hyper mag has got there next mag as the Nintendo DS launch mag
which is the Feb magazine

Anyway glad to know that a famous person went to japan to buy a DS, woot to Scott Brown for buying one
on the way home from his godspeed and enchanted gigs in Australia
