Sony admits PSP mistakes and commands users to adapt
« on: January 28, 2005, 06:17:37 AM »
Article at Gamespot

Abstract: 4 800 PSP units were returned because of defective square buttons. Kutaragi defends the design as intentional and claims that they have made the PSP the most beautiful thing in the world and that nobody would dare to criticize the PSP if it was designed by an artist.

Oppinion: PSP, meet NGage. You two have a lot in common.
Idiotic design faults are never good. Making those mistakes when you're going against the Gameboy is fatal. Too many competitors have been demolished by the Gameboy because of flaws in their design, now Sony has the boldness to stand there and claim "users have to adapt"?!? If that's the attitude Sony's entering the next generation with I fully expect Microsoft to take the lead. Arrogance was Atari's downfall, arrogance was Nintendo's downfall, arrogance won't let Sony off the hook.

Karl Rove?  That'd be close to brilliant... tho I think he wouldn't live for more than 3 minutes if he worked in the same room as Reggie.

No, Reggie would take his name and then kick his ass! And then Rove would be flying nameless, and butt-less all the way over to his friend, George Bush!!

I think very soon, the PSP will be taking a trip flying as well. But not where Sony wants it to go!

It wouldn't be Sony without telling it's loyal customers to go **** themselves and deal with it.

Yeah, this is all amazing, but by no means points to the failure of the device.  We all know what a piece of garbage the PS2 design is... -_-

Yeah, average Joe Gamer and friends can sit and play Ps2 while all us Nintendo Players go to a new age of gaming and far greater gaming experiences. Hmm, some people must like poor quality and use that stance to bash Nintendo as a company making games only for kids! Reggie just said the other day that Nintendo wants to make games for everyone. That means they´re going to be more like Sony, but far greater in terms of overall games quality!

Good point. While I dislike Sony, I must admit that the hardware of the PSP is impressive and quite cool looking. But I think that once word gets out that, as a gaming device, it can't hold a candle to the DS, sales will decline. Word of mouth is always more powerfull than marketing.

I think we've already seen that happening, games sales of the PSP are very low in Japan, this indicates that the PSP is being used as a Media player only by many consumers, a trend whcih bodes well for the DS, because if companies see they can't get high game sales on the PSP they might start abandoning it.

LOL!

It's not intentional anymore.

GameSpot

But they've found a new scapegoat. It's a "manufacturing defect". Apparently there's some "extra plastic" in the button mechanisim which is causing the problem. It has nothing to do with 90% of the square button hovering over the LCD screen, just because Sony didn't want to make the outer case one millimeter wider.

If you return your Japanese PSP to Sony, they will cut off that darned piece of extra plastic. Problem solved!
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

"This is the design that we came up with. There may be people that complain about its usability, but that's something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to."

Kutaragi has a lot of courage to not only take a piss on the consumers, but also the developers. Seeing Kutaragi as a businessman, I can't believe he even made some of these statements. With 4,800 Japanese PSP systems being returned for square button problems, there is a serious issue here. And he is telling everyone to adapt? I actually thought the article was a joke at first.

“The Walkman only ran for about two hours when it first came out, too.” - Sorry Mr. Kutaragi, but by today's standards, that short of a battery span is an absolute joke.

"I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world." - I'm not even going to touch this one.

"Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that." - Is this guy some kind of psychopath? I think the PSP is a fairly decent system and all... But if an architect makes a blueprint for a gate that leads you into a swamp, there's gonna be a problem.

According to the Playstation.com forum they have fixed the button problem, I sure hope so because mine is already paid for.
