General Gaming / RE: Factor 5's "Lair". Holy crap.
« on: April 13, 2007, 11:59:24 AM »
The new trailer is pretty disappointing. The opening cut-scene is horrendous. Nice graphics, sure, but it's an FMV so who cares. The direction is terrible (Uwe Boll has a better sense of composition than that horrid 3-shot) and the dialogue sounds like it's from every other midevil dragon/rpg ever. Horrid.

Then the gameplay...eh...The ground stuff looks repetitive quick and I'm a little confused as to why the dragons sound like X-Wings when they blow fire. The amazing grass work gives me hope, though. New level of realism or what?

They should just redo Lair for the Wii.

This review is absurd! You guys clearly did not put in enough time with the game. This is just another horrible review from the commies here at NWR! Geesh. Now I know for sure that when I actually play this game it'll rock.

All I've heard regarding 20 hours was from reviews, not Nintendo. Most Zelda reviews said 25-35 hours which is exactly what it took me.

Which of his films are your favorites?

(I don't think NWR's quality has really deteriorated. That's just foolish. I think if you write this kind of review you need to be prepared for the same reaction, which you guys obviously weren't, but otherwise people are mainly just peeved at the score. Just be glad you only get this much flak when it's a 3.5. The whole IGN/DD thing was far far worse. Especially since the damn game deserved a 7.5. The only thing that NWR needs to fix is the design, but we won't go there. )

That really has nothing to do with whether or not he played the game. If anything that's actually something he can judge, seeing as it only requires one to read this thread.

Well he did defend the game as well, but really that comment was more directed at why I thought he (and others) stepped over the line in regards to the reviewer. That is an insult, playing and simple, which I don't think the reviewers here deserve. As was mentioned previously in this thread, these kinds of insults and such seem to always be directed at those reviewers that give a game a lower score than the NWR community thinks it deserves. It turns into something more than disagreement, but questioning the integrity of the reviewer to accept criticism or that they have some agenda.

Well, that's really a risk you accept. I think some comments have been made that really raise questions about the review. Some were, indeed, way too harsh. But, as a reviewer, that's always the consequence of a negative review. If he wanted to avoid comments he could've written a really apologetic review and probably avoided them. Or he could've just written a straight forward review, which would've gotten flak for the scores but not a ton. Instead he wrote a very sarcastic, very snide review. I personally think if you're going to give a game a 3, you might as well be snide and amusing (I don't think the review actually is amusing, but the attempt is made). However, you need to know that the nastier you are to a game then anyone who likes that game is going to be just as nasty back.

All opinions are not equally valid. If that were true they would be equally invalid as well. Some opinions (i.e. better researched, considered and qualified ones) are superior to others. A person who hates golf games, for instance, does not hold an equal opinion to someone who likes some golf games. Someone who hates Nintendo does not give an equal opinion when reviewing a game to someone who judges games individual, not by company. I don't meant to imply this review holds a lesser opinion (never played the game, never intend to) but please don't say "all opinions are equally valid" because that's very elementary school.

Putting Sony at #1 is kind of silly, though. Because their success wasn't guaranteed in anyway. If Nintendo had done other things differently then Sony wouldn't have succeeded. It wasn't that decision that killed them. But the article is rather stupid so who cares...

As sad as it is, this is likely true. Though, it's only typical of Sony's previous success that they do what is worst for the player and sell anyway.

As someone whose father died when he was seven due to lung cancer...I too applaud quitting smoking. I don't personally know how hard it is, but I know it's perhaps the hardest thing you'll ever do. So good on you! Plus, it's never too soon to quit (my father found out he had cancer a couple months after quitting).

MP1 had alot of backtracking, mainly for the artifacts. When I beat my final boss, I was still missing several of the artifacts and to go back and get them, wherever they may be in that huge world, was not very appealing. Technically you could say the same thing about Wind Waker's Triforce collection too, if you would have gotten them as you progressed it wouldn't be nearly as a tedious, and would include much less backtracking. I dunno, but it seems to me to be poor design or at the very least questionable design that you aren't led to items one after another, instead of potentially being faced with a huge scavenger quest towards the end.

I really don't remember this?

You don't remember having to collect the 12 artifacts before you could unlock the final area of the game? I sure do.

Like, before you go down and kill the big metroid monster, right? After you kill Ripley? I think the thing was that I had worked my way through everything, getting all the missiles and stuff so I just had them by then.

The moral of the story is not to smoke. Then you wouldn't need your drink replaced.

I can't decide which version it's modeled after. I'd almost say the graphics are even sharper?

Wii: http://www.jeux-france.com/images8_4_19814.html
GCN: http://media.cube.ign.com/media/015/015821/img_2037573.html
PS2: http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/013/013887/img_2976224.html

The best examples, especially of lighting, have always been the interiors. Unfortunately no Wii interiors have been shown yet. I think character models are absolutely superior in the Wii to either other version:

Wii: http://www.jeux-france.com/afficher_images.html?Image_big=Webmasters/Images/57431520070406_124830_5_big.jpg
GCN: http://media.cube.ign.com/media/015/015821/img_2314575.html
PS2: http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/013/013887/img_2976143.html

It's also a lot crisper. But we don't have enough screens for a better comparison right now.

I'm not surprised about the dialogue thing. Paper Mario games (Mario & Luigi too) are kind of bad for that. They go on and on and on. The graphics thing sounds stupid to me, though.

Uhhh, it's my opinion.

Why did you start a thread to post your ridiculous opinion if you weren't planning on backing it up?

I'm backing it up by explaining why. This isn't a quantifiable thing. All you can do is discuss why you have the position you do. Key word: discuss.

We've already gone over this (as you continue ignoring any of the points I raised as you cannot answer them).

Very clever. Will you call me "doodie head" next?

You cannot quantify the research. I find it an absurd waste of money to leave the PS3 on SOLELY for that reason.

Right, because the PS3 is causing an energy crisis because of all the nerds that just can't stop running folding@home.

Hyperbole kind of renders your comment irrelevant.

What if you were running the most basic computer? That example is not a low-end machine, which would be perfectly fine for running F@H.

Crappy old computers use 100-200w at average use. And of course, crappy old computers don't fold proteins as fast. :3

So it's ok for you to just make up numbers?

It's not a cost issue.

That was a typo, I meant energy not money.

I see that's the point you're trying to make, but you have to substantiate it. Please post an article or compelling argument or ANYTHING that would indicate that the power used folding proteins is "almost offensive it's so blatantly wasteful."

Also, I'd like to point out that the power consumption of the PS3 while grinding these numbers (200w) is less than a decent PC at idle (220w).

It's not a cost issue. If it was only a matter of paying 9 cents an hour to cure cancer, that would be fine. But that's not really the point?

It seems to me that if people were serious about doing good they'd do Folding, sure, but offset it by decreasing energy usage elsewhere or something.
