Nintendo last fiscal report.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2012/120426e.pdf

Page 15

Nintendo 3DS

The Americas

Fiscal Year 2011 - 1.32 million

Fiscal Year 2012 - 4.67 million

Lifetime total - 5.99 million

The 3DS is over 6 million in North America.  Doesn't matter what some of you think but these are the official numbers from Nintendo themselves and Nintendo's own reports considers these as sales.  So unless Iwata was cooking the books for investors then the 3DS is over 6 million in North America, period.

Ah, I get it. These numbers you provide are for the "Americas", which includes additional markets beyond the US. The 4.5 million number they provided was applicable to only USA, so I can see the USA numbers being at around 5 million, and about a million in other markets up and down the western hemisphere?

And the 3DS gets a huge boost from DQM 3D.  Who knew that series was still this popular in Japan?  I'm guessing it'll be another million seller at this point.

On top of that its a remake of a Gameboy Colour game. That's how strong the Dragon Quest Franchise is in Japan. I wouldn't worry about Dragon Quest X if I was Sqenix. It's gonna sell like hot cakes.

Vita's taken an ass whooping from the 3ds in Japan (9 to 1 ratio).  In the states and EU the vita's at least 2:1 (for the year anyhow).  Sony's exclusion of E3 news isn't going help any and now the only show that's left is TGS.  Sony better have AAA RPGS to announce at the Japanese expo otherwise this system is going end up in an early grave.

Hate to be nitpicky, but even in Europe and Australia it was the Game Boy Color (not Colour).

Louie, DQ IX was the best selling game in the series in Japan. So yeah, a huge selling franchise on a huge selling system will equal huge sales. LOL

[/quoteIt feels like it's treated like a different series than regular DQ.  I know the series is popular, just not popular enough to reach that high of sales.  I was thinking it'd make around 250-300K, not 500K+.  That's all I was saying.  It makes sense though I guess when you state it was a remake.  It seems like DQ remakes seem to always sell well.  I thought it was a new game.

I believe all the DQ Monster games have debuted at roughly-or-above 500k, except for the re-release of a DS title (which had a measly 120k or so: the precise figure eludes me). This includes remakes.

Looking at those LTD numbers for consoles, it looks like the 3DS will surpass the lifetime sales of the PS3 this year.  That's pretty amazing and probably shows just how much more important mobile gaming is to Japan than home consoles.

1. Diablo III (PC) - Activision Blizzard
2. Max Payne 3 (X360, PS3) - Take-Two
3. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (X360, PS3) - Ubisoft

Ah, look at those negative percentages. Lean months. A PC exclusive is at the top followed by other sequels that took a long time coming. The new game, Dragon's Dogma, takes 9th.

I'm disappointed (but not surprised, given that all but 1 on that list are multiplatform games) that Starhawk didn't make the Top 10, though Sony insists that it sold well.  That game deserves to sell a lot better than it has.  Unfortunately, it seems that no matter what Sony does in terms of quality or variety in their 1st party software, their exclusives always seem to be relatively slow burns at best.

I am surprised to see Dragon's Dogma on that list, though I suppose the 360-exclusive early demo for Resident Evil 6 had a lot to do with that.

And is NPD no longer giving out specific numbers on hardware sales?

Well numbers for Dragons Dogma came out and it only sold 92,000 despite being number 9 on May NPD.  This shows just how low sales were for games the last month.

Quote
And is NPD no longer giving out specific numbers on hardware sales?

Oh sadly, we got those numbers as well.

360: 160K
 PS3: 124K
 3DS: 113.5K
 Wii: 71K
 PSV: Somewhere between 50-57k

So yeah, this generation looks like it's finally reached its saturation point.  The Wii sales shouldn't be surprising but the fact that the 360/PS3 are doing this poorly shows despite still having a steady lineup of games shows most people who wanted these systems have bought them by now.

For handhelds the 3DS sales aren't good but at least there's NSMB 2 in a few months to help that system.  The Vita on the other hand is just dead.

So if you score a 40% on a test, but the other people in your class scored a 20%, would you still be happy you did twice as well as your fellow classmates?  That's what the 360/PS3 selling twice as well as the Wii last month means.  Yeah a 40% is better then a 20% but you still failed the test.  160/124 is better then 71 but it's still terrible numbers.  Especially when the 360/PS3 still have a steady lineup of videogames coming out for these systems will the Wii is lineup of games is nothing more then a barren wasteland.

I haven't been strictly following Hardware sales numbers this past year, but yeah, I'd agree that we're looking at this gen being saturated. BUT, I do want to say that Nintendo's been arguing for a couple years that consumer purchasing behavior is shifting to become very Holiday centric, and we're seeing sales deferred in other, weaker, months and (partially?) made up for in heavier and heavier Holiday months. We could still see impressive hardware numbers during Holiday 2012 from current gen consoles.

That's true but in previous years sales were much higher then this for the market leader even during May.  Just one year ago, these were the sales for the 3 home consoles.

Wii - 236K
PS3 - 177K

The worst selling home console last May, still sold better then the best selling home console this May.  Hell, if you combine all the systems sold last May they'd sell 683k.  While if you combine all the systems this May they only sell 355k.  Seriously, that a drop in home console sales by almost 50% between this May compared to last May.  When something changes that much in just a year, that goes to shows we have finally reached the saturation point for the current home consoles.  Even though Holiday sales can be much better, having such a drastic shift for a non Holiday month in less then a year points to a clear shift in the appeal of the current gen consoles.

Dear Lollipop Chainsaw. Please come to Wii U.
Carmine Red, Associate Editor

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.
