Nice to see Fire Emblem Awakening holding on to a top spot. Does anyone know how those sales compare to previous games?

The way Awakening sales are going, it's on track to being the 2nd best selling game in the series in Japan.  If it's legs hold up, it could actually get close to Mystery of the Emblem.  Either way, it's a huge success since it's the most popular game in the series in over a decade.

Well, there's nothing surprising on this NPD list except how radically different it ended up compared to the "rumored" NPD list posted earlier in this thread.  The most striking things I see is just how many games on this list I do not have any interest in whatsoever.

As for the Witcher, I've been very reluctant to pick up that game because my completionist gaming style would demand that I play the first Witcher first.  I don't like playing games on my laptop, and I really don't have time for two massive RPGs right now anyway.  Maybe I'll play it someday, but for now I'd really rather play something else.

I wouldn't believe that. Especially since GameStop gives their numbers to NPD.

I do think it's possible it jut didn't make the Top 10.

Yeah that is what I have been hearing too Nickmitch. Also to add on that what other games have been retail exclusive and they haven't shown up on the NPD. If they have shown up what could be the reasons for that? Few that comes to mind. Chibi Robo:Park Patrol for the DS at Walmart. Soul Bubbles for the DS at Toys R Us. Those are the ones that come to mind off the bat. Any others other then Xenoblade?

IIRC, those two games sold terribly (especially Chibi-Robo). Supposedly Xenoblade sold around 100K, and I think it's more than possible that MLB 12 sole more than that.

Actually that's xbox units sold not software, NPD didn't post an single number for software sold, instead it stated that the highest selling software this month didn't sell more than April 2011 7th place game which was Just Dance 2 and since we don't have that number we can't compare it to nothing other than Prototype 2 sold less than JD2 (april 2011) and more than Michael Jackson (april 2011) sales.

The exact quote "Last April, the top seven titles outsold the top-selling title this year".  236K is only mentioned in terms of xboxes systems selling.

According to http://gamerinvestments.com/video-game-stocks/index.php/2011/05/12/april-2011-npd-u-s-hardware-and-software-sales-data/, the #6 game in April 2011 sold 236K. If true, and that the #1 game this year sold less than the #7 game from last April, then indeed the #1 game this year sold less than 236K.

A clarification: we got word from NPD that they don't list sales for retailer-exclusive games, so Xenoblade wouldn't be on there regardless of what it sold.

That is stupid of them. When a album/single is retailer exclusive, Billboard still counts it in their charts. NPD should do the same.

Billboard compiles music sales data for general consumption.
NPD complies sales data for business/retailers.  Walmart doesn't need to know how much of a GameStop exclusive sold (you'll note, NEVER does NPD break down the sales data by retailer).  GameStop and Nintendo know how much it sold, and that's all who need to know.

Individual chain sales data is VERY confidential information.  This is why Walmart refused to work with NPD for so long.

I have to wonder if NPD even knows. If this is their policy, I doubt GameStop gave them any numbers for it. UncleBob's right here, for the audiences NPD is intended for it's not necessary to report that. If Nintendo or GameStop wants people to know (which they definitely will if it sells exceptionally well), they'll tell them themselves.

But if the game does sell exceptionally well wouldn't that be an embarrassment to Reggie and NoA who didn't even want to bring the game over at all? If it would be embarrassing to him then maybe he wouldn't want anyone to know that it did very well.

They know how many they shipped to GameStop. Nintendo already made their money, whether GameStop sells the copies or not.

I would imagine it was part of the contract between the two companies that GameStop would tell Nintendo how many copies they sold. Hell, from what I hear Nintendo has more precise sales tracking methods than just about anyone else in the business.
