Tell that to the Counterstrike players.

de_dust2 24/7. All day, every day. Ah, it's been too long since I've played the game (with user-made bots because my internet sucked). I forgot the hot keys to the buy menu.

If great single player game content can be timeless and classic, so can great multi player game content. What they may lack in a narrative, a multiplayer's player interaction between other players, maps, weapons, rules and systems can be engaging from the first to the thousandth match and beyond. Sometimes a player needs some space between games. Or not, looking at Starcraft and Starcraft 2 pro gamers.

Still, I occasionally pop in to a bot match in Unreal Tournament and it is still so fun to score frags while jumping around in Morpheus.

Just as I thought, Gametrailers' Invisible Walls Podcast rolled out February's single SKU NPD numbers, and the results were quite a bit different:

1.  Just Dance 2 (Wii) - 554, 552
2.  Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (PS3) - 398,284
3.  Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (360) - 391, 913
4.  Call of Duty: Black Ops (360) - 390, 729
5.  Call of Duty: Black Ops (PS3) - 288, 674
6.  Killzone 3 (PS3) - 279, 824
7.  Bulletstorm (360) - 233, 685
8.  Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii) - 226, 685
9.  Michael Jackson: The Experience (Wii) - 226, 378
10.  NBA 2k11 (360) - 224, 800

11.  Mario Sports Mix (Wii) - 199, 965
12.  Dance Central (360) - 183, 920
13.  Dead Space 2 (360) - 179, 675
14.  NBA 2k11 (PS3) - 159, 278

Interesting to see MvC3 sell slightly better on PS3 than 360.  That rarely happens.  If you're wondering where the PS3 version of Bullestorm is, it's apparently at #49 with roughly 45,000 units sold (ouch).  Also worth noting is that, according to that same podcast, NPD will start tracking digital sales (no details on what that'll mean) in upcoming months, perhaps as soon as the March NPD report.

Maybe the PS3 version didn't sell because of how the system is now wide open to piracy and so people just pirated it instead?

I certainly liked Bulletstorm.  It was nice and refreshing, with some surprisingly intelligent design decisions for a game that presents itself as being so crass and stupid.

I don't know, but it should be noted that the original Call of Duty is available for download off the PSN store (and probably Xbox Live as well). The original COD came out in 2003 I believe, so its 7-8 years old now, but its for sale and I would imagine at least some people are buying it.  So if that's the case why couldn't Black Ops be re-released 20 years from now?
There's a certain appeal to the first game released in a series, I'm sure many fans are curious of how the game started out and what it was like in its first entry. If I remember rightly, the original version of Madden NFL Football was included as a bonus in some recent edition of Madden, but I don't think any other version of the series was ever re-released in any manner. I doubt we'll see Call of Duty 2-7 ever become available again.

Actually, previous collectors' editions of Madden have included several different versions of the game, from different eras. The reason you don't see older sports games released very often is that it's not as easy as just uploading a ROM. EA (or whomever) doesn't have the rights to the names of players who are no longer playing, and thus no longer members of the players' union they made the original deal with. EA has gotten around this in the past by modifying the ROM to include current players and teams (by the way, if any EA employees are reading this, I would gladly pay money for one of the Genesis NHL games to be given this treatment).

Also, not to sound like a jerk, but Call of Duty 2 (and possibly 3) is available on Xbox Live. It was a 360 launch title, but Activision went to the trouble of making it available via Microsoft's Games on Demand service. Again, this is Activision, a company at the forefront in the field of milking franchises to death. I endorse it, because I want to see Activision fall on its face by destroying the Call of Duty brand and have no franchises left to milk. Too bad their acquisition of Blizzard will prevent them from completely falling apart.

That's interesting, I figured it was possible but I had no idea. To be fair, the older versions of Madden are just a bonus on a new game, they aren't being sold as-is by themselves. I wonder how many people have interest in older versions of Call of Duty... each entry is kind of disposable since the new ones take the game and build on it, so it isn't something like, say, Mario, where most of the games are unique and therefore still worthwhile when a new one comes out.

I doubt we'll see Call of Duty 2-7 ever become available again.

COD 5 was my favorite of all time. Its not like they're all the same, or even all set in the same era. Madden was a piss poor example because little changes from one game to the next except for roster changes. But look at other hit game series like Super Mario Bros. for example. Even though SMB1 was the first in the series  and has its appeal for that reason, that doesn't mean that people don't also want to play and revisit SMB2 or SMB3. Each SMB was significantly different enough from the others to justify its existence. The Madden series is a very different thing.

So anyways, I like COD 7 and think its a fine game. Its not as good as COD 5 though in my opinion, but its certainly better than COD 6 or COD 4. Basically, the COD games I like most are the ones made by Treyarch, and the ones I like least are the ones made by Infinity Ward. 20 years from now maybe I would be interested in a re-release of COD7. But if its COD6 you can forget it...

I wonder how many people have interest in older versions of Call of Duty... each entry is kind of disposable since the new ones take the game and build on it,

1) I have an interest in the older COD games. I never played COD 1-3 and have an interest in doing so.

2) That's flat out wrong to say they are "disposable" and that the "new ones take the game and build on it". That's wrong and its bullshit. I strongly disagree with that, and am even offended by it. I guess if you only play the multiplayer you might think that, but the campaign in each game is very different. There is a story there and characters which are unique to that game and do not constantly reappear in game after game after game.

I know many people who still play WaW regularly. I also know one person who still plays MW2, though for the life of me I can't understand why...

Maybe he likes the nuking in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer or prefers Spec Ops to zombies. Campaign-wise, I feel that Infinity Ward builds a slightly better experience. This puzzles me as I remember liking Call of Duty: United Offensive's campaign more than Call of Duty. United Offensive was developed by Gray Matter Interactive who was later folded in to Treyarch.

I recommend checking out Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive. Call of Duty 2, not so much as I was disappointed overall in its campaign. Call of Duty 3 is Treyarch's work and I assume it gets unfairly shat on.

As for Madden, are you sure you aren't exaggerating with it being mostly roster changes? It looks like the team tries to include some welcome tweaks and features despite the yearly cycle. Last year looked like they made big improvements in speeding up the game. I wouldn't know much since I don't care for sports games or sports simulation games.

It's probably just my uninterest in the series talking, but the Call of Duty games really do seem terribly similar to me, from their settings to their weapons. It's likely because they strive for realism, so even if they have different settings and wars, they still look similar and have similar fundamentals. I have my doubts that the stories are anything unique or interesting, since they're all about a war and feature a stereotypical macho-man as the main character(s) who is often nameless, but I'll save that judgment for when I play the single player modes... if I ever do.  This is just my opinion of course, it isn't meant to offend.

I know new Madden games often add significant or worthwhile features, and that was my point. What's the point playing an older version when a newer one has all that and more? The only reason I can think of is if one likes a team from a certain year because of the roster they had back then, which is understandable.

On Call of Duty, you're right for the most part. However, the player character is named but silent. And the speaking roles are more of a stereotypical grizzled grunt or special operations operator than something like the Doom marine from the Doom comic or the characters of Gears of War.

That seems to be the range of popular shooter game characters if they aren't silent. They're either a Schwarzenegger Commando or Aliens marine, a serious grunt or commander from a war movie, or a suave and slick secret agent like James Bond. Props should be given to Half Life, Deus Ex, and a few other shooter games for having characters that come across as a bit more regular Joe.

The player character is not silent. Maybe during gameplay, but if you've played Black Ops you would know that Alex Mason (the player character for most but not all of the missions) does say a lot. He's in a freaking torture chair and forced to talk and when you play the missions you are basically just re-enacting what he is describing to his interrogator.

Both of you are showing your ignorance of how COD single-player campaign really is. The characters actually talk a great deal in (and sometimes even out of) the cutscenes. They do more than just grunt like cavemen the way you're making it out to be.

Perhaps I should have said mostly silent. It has only been recently (to my knowledge as I have not played Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, or Call of Duty 3) in Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops that a player-controlled character has spoken. I apologize for letting Alex Mason's numerous speaking lines slip out of my memory. It takes some getting used to after so many games of having a silent protagonist.

Also, Gorden Freeman is not a caveman!

Is it the Medal of Honor series that has the nameless solder then?  Both of those series are so similar that I might be getting them confused, they kind of blend together in my mind.

There is real depth to the characters in the Black Ops campaign. They aren't just "stereotypical macho men" as someone said earlier. I could give some examples and explain exactly why the characters have depth, but that would be a spoiler and you should just play the game and discover that for yourself.

Just got around to watching the latest Invisible Walls episode. Always interesting to see those NPD numbers. I'm really curious as to how the digital distribution numbers will pan out. I really want to know what numbers Steam and the Wii Shop Channel push out.

No, the silent player character has a name. Actually, most shooters are pretty good about giving your character a name even if they don't give him or her a voice.

Eh, not any more depth than a mediocre or better action movie. Though, I guess that makes it miles ahead of other Call of Duty games. It certainly helps that all of BLOPS revolves around Alex Mason rather than paying equal attention to two or three far-flung soldiers.

The plot of Black Ops is better than that of most action movies I've seen.

Bullshit. The game doesn't revolve entirely around him. In Project Nova you play as Reznov back in 1945 which fills in much of the backstory behind the origins of the Nova Gas. You also play as Hudson in a few missions. All these things you're saying about the game prove you either haven't played the game at all or you weren't paying any attention if you did.

No. I'm a terrible conversationalist who glosses and blurs details and foolishly assumes they are understood by people. I contemplated typing "mostly revolves around Alex Mason", but I thought less of Hudson's adventures and the Reznov flashback compared to Mason's plight and made Mason my only star with the other two as support attachments. Also, I had it in my mind that "revolves around Alex Mason" does not necessarily mean "you only play as Alex Mason." I thought it best to be vague in order to avoid spoilers. Then again, it is usually a given that you play as multiple characters in a Call of Duty campaign.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot about Nietsch and Mosely in the CODBLOPS campaign. Argh! Okay, I wasn't paying attention when I played the campaign for that one run.
