Tony Hawk: Shred gives credibility to my assumption that publishers are greenlighting unneeded and unwanted sequels to give the impression that an unsuccessful IP is popular which may convince you to buy it.  "What's this Tony Hawk: Shred?  Well I heard that Tony Hawk: Ride was terrible but if it was popular enough to get a sequel then perhaps I was wrong and should buy it."  That's how we all think in Activision's fantasy world.  DJ Hero 2 is the same idea (though I heard the first DJ Hero is a good game).

Assassin's Creed and Killzone were considered disappointments but sequels were made anyway and they were quite successful.  Even Nintendo is talking about a Wii Music sequel.  This is the new strategy.

Huh?

Indeed.  The first Assassin's Creed was largely considered a mediocre game at best by the critics, but it did sell very well.

The game was **** on by critics and I've never ever met anyone who played it who thought it was a good game.  So I figured it would not have sold particularly well.  But 8 million copies?  Holy ****!

I guess that was more the Red Steel routine where the first game was crap but sells huge and then the sequel is actually a good game.

What critics say about a game doesn't always intersect with what consumers say. When it comes down to it, what they say about a game is just their own opinion, and the only thing that sets their opinion apart from the opinion of everyone else is that they happen to get paid for it. Doesn't mean theirs is more valid, though.

Gamasutra released their NPD October report
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6210/npd_behind_the_numbers_october_.php

and I found one part of it very interesting(I only skimmed the pics :D), especially since we been debating on whether Wii is in need of a replacement like the DS

vs

vs

Both Sony and MS are having the best hardware years ever so far and Nintendo need to have a record setting Nov. and a trick play in Dec. just to keep them from being significantly down YoY. normally YoY wouldn't be that big of a deal, but they competition is seeing a YoY increase in sales and in the case of the 360 have even outsold the Wii YTD. Now holiday sales could swing YTD back in Nintendo's favor, but it's still a downward trend that is only more likely to get gonna get worse next year.

and for those that say the DS was still selling good. It is from a hardware perspective, but software was looking pretty bad. Not pathetic like PSP selling on a PS2 level bad, but way down from it's peak of several years ago.

Assuming Wii doesn't have the most spectacular Holiday sales ever, then we know it's already sliding down from it's peak and Nintendo will need to do something major to slow this downward trend if they want to keep the Wii around till Xmas 2012 and not see software revenue continue to swirl down the drain (Nintendo lost just as much software revenue as MS & Sony gained).

BlackNMild, you should throw those charts into the Wii 2 thread.  They show that the Wii has peaked while the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still growing.  Now that the Wii has peaked it is time to consider the next generation.  Meanwhile the PS360 trends fit the idea of those consoles having a long shelf life and even their motion controllers acting as their next gen.

Looks like Goldeneye is doing okay in the UK charts. Not brilliantly, but this is the most competitive time of year for new game releases, so it's not bad either. If the name alone had a significant influence, then I would expect Donkey Kong Country Returns to reach a higher bar. Hugely successful in the past over here and the character himself is perhaps relevant to a broader audience because of all his appearances in extraneous games.

Yeah, I don't agree with that choice either. Who knows what methodology they use to determine what gets tracked separately and what they group together, but I have a feeling it involves darts.

So the fratboy population of Japan is about ~130k. Got it.

Also, what special edition PSP got released this week?

I think there were more than one bundle, but that could have been last week.
I know they just released a Pink PSP, Blue & White PSP and a Black & Red PSP

but, This week could have been the black and gold PSP with 2 grips, an extra large battery, concave analog nubs and MH3p insignia on the back.

edit:
released this week

So the fratboy population of Japan is about ~130k.

There is a substantial U.S. military presence in Okinawa. I'm sure they made up at least some of the Black Ops purchases.

Especially because the game itself is in English, right? The charts call it "Subtitled Edition", so I'm guessing the voices are still in the original English but with Japanese subtitles.  That means Americans stationed in Japan would have no problem playing it.
is your sanity...
