I think it's great to see 'Just Dance' grow into this sleeper hit. It's like a giant slap in the face to the gaming critics who bashed the game from every angle as well as the typical "hardcore gamer" that believes a game like this should not exist.

It must have had some effect, because Nintendo didn't immediately just turnaround and release a "Wii Music +" with actual Nintendo songs or "Wii Music Festival" with actual gameplay.

Wii Music did it's job, and it did it well. Whinecore gamers were still pissy and refused to buy the game. I enjoyed it like a giant musical toy I never had.

Wii Music did it's job, and it did it well.

No it didn't, it was released around Christmas as the big system seller to keep Wii momentum up but completely failed at that, resulting in a massive drop in sales.

It may not have did as well as other games in the "Wii ..." series, but it still sold several million copies despite so called hardcore gamers bitching about it.

I don't have Wii Music and don't intend to get it. My friend got it used and I played it at his house for a bit, and frankly I was very disappointed in it. I think it would have had a lot more potential if it utilized some sort of musical peripheral like Guitar Hero and those type of games do. The Wiimote just doesn't cut it on its own as a musical instrument.

Its job was to maintain the Wii momentum over Christmas and beyond, it didn't. The momentum collapsed and for a long time people declared the Wii dead with nothing to play. It took until Wii Sports Resort for the momentum to swing up again.

And yet Wii sales continue being high and beating the competition easily. If you are talking about sales, I can prove that you are dead wrong. If you are talking about mindshare, that can be diffiuclt to prove either way. However, Wii sales did not suffer at all (in fact, for the first six months of 2009 the Wii outsold the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 COMBINED. Wii Music was released in the US in October 2008, here were the sales for the last three months of 2008: 803,000 in October; 2,040,000 in November; 2,150,000 in December. For 2009:
679,200 in January
753,000 in February
601,000 in March
340,000 in April
289,500 in May
361,700 in June

The CLOSEST that either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 came was in May when the Xbox 360 was only 114.5K behind (at 175K).

So how do you figure that the game failed to maintain momentum for the system? Outselling the competition by more than 2:1 and selling more than 3 million systems (compared to 1.6 million for Xbox 360 and 1.1 million for PlayStation 3) in the first half of the year is pretty damn strong.

Wouldn't you need to look at what software was selling during those months to determine what software was "maintaining" Wii hardware sales during all the months you just listed?

Did WiiMusic chart during any of those months?

Yeah, if I remember correctly, the Wii games that were really charting at the time were Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit, so those were the ones keeping the consoles selling.  I don't remember Wii Music ever hitting Top 10 NPD outside of maybe one month.

It doesn't change my point though, kdr tries to imply that Wii Music hurt or didn't help the Wii. The sales numbers show that the Wii did not suffer at all after the release of the game.

While it is true the game was only in the top 10 once, the fact that it still sold millions means that it was one of those games that sells consistently over a long time and those numbers add up.

Yeah it did sell millions. I think it was a disappointment to Miyamoto because it didn't sell as much as typical Nintendo games. While 2 million would have 3rd parties jumping up and down for Nintendo it would be a disappointment. Nintendo job as a hardware maker is to make compelling software and keep the momentum going so that 3rd parties can jump on the platform without much risk. Same type of thing happened on the NES. I think it was 1989 when excellent games that we today define as classics came out that were 3rd party.
It is all about momentum.

I think Miyamoto was expecting it to sell 10 million+ like the other games in the series, that's why he was disappointed (IIRC, he was also disappointed in critical reception of the game).

For hardware comparisons (the game came out in October 2008):
October 2007- 519K, 2008- 803K, 2009- 506.9K
November 2007- 981K, 2008- 2.04 million, 2009- 1.26 million
December 2007- 1.35 million, 2008- 2.15 million, 2009- 3.81 million
January 2008- 274K, 2009- 678.2K, 2010- 465.8K
February 2008- 432K, 2009- 753K, 2010- 613.2K

Need I go on? Wii sales were up YoY for the months after the release of Wii Music.

Sales would have been up during those months whether WiiMusic was released or not.

now compare those sales to what Wii games were in the Top 10 at the time. I bet WiiMusic wasn't in it, therefore WiiMusic was irrelevant to the Wii's maintained sales numbers.

Re: Official Wii Sales Thread

You can't assume that. It may be your opinion, but it's not a fact.

I can assume that since sales were like that the year before and the year after. It's the holiday season and sales are always up, especially for the Wii.

WiiMusic was not a significant title in any way, shape or form. Wii had record sales before it, despite it and after it. You still haven't proved that WiiMusic had any effect on Wii sales as all you're posting are hardware numbers for the holiday season. We know Wii sold well in the holiday months, what you were trying to prove is that WiiMusic was the reason for that. You haven't done that, and I pretty sure that you can't.

edit: And look at those Japanese hardware sales. That is why I think Japan is getting 3DS first if there isn't a simultaneous WW launch. ~120k sold a month is about 1/5 what it is selling in the US and EUR is probably not too far behind that.
