It's 2 FAILs in one post. Ymee's post has been invalidated.

& if you look back at my post, you realize that I mentioned discount and bargain bin games selling, but the biggest problem for software on the Wii is advertising. There almost is none. But when there is, it's likely for the Wii version to outsell the PS3 version and get close to, if not surpass the 360 version if the game is multi-plat.

3rd parties can complain all they want.
But I can't be mad at some other guy for stealing the girl of my dreams if I never bothered to let her know I exist.

What's quality by hardcore standards isn't necessarily by expanded audience standards. Those people wouldn't enjoy most hardcore games at all and what they value in a game is completely different from what we do.

Hey let's not over-generalize here.

EA's Boom Blox spent millions on marketing and it didn't help much--sold 1 million, BBB sold 1/4 million?

As for BlackNMild2k1, yes marketting helps but these crap titles get just the same marketting as the good games.  And since the WII doesn't have a hardcore following, the customers fall for marketting gimmicks.  In the end it's up to the consumers and in the WII's case is made up of  mostly casual gamers (mom's dad's ect) who freaking really don't have a clue what to buy.

As for GI, fine don't use it but you can use anybody else's top 50 games for the Year and it's going be basically the same minus a couple of titles.  Can you honestly state the WII had a better year than MS or Sony--taking about quality software.  If you are just going be metacritic or even gamerankings than Big N didn't even have an AAA title (92% or above) this year.

It's been posted on this forum a few times already, but NPD Analysis: How to Sell a Wii Game over at Game|Life is an excellent article.

Quote
[M]ost sequels targeted to the mainstream and casual markets actually underperform in comparison to the original, which is the opposite to what has traditionally been the case for core targeted games. If you examine the Nintendo Wii and DS platforms (the current primary platform for this audience) Boom Blox outsold Boom Blox 2 (Wii); Brain Age outsold Brain Age 2 (DS); Guitar Hero III bested World Tour (Wii); The Bigs crushed The Bigs 2 (Wii); Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (Wii) is on track to outperform its Winter counterpart; Rayman Raving Rabbids (Wii) (2006) outsold its 2007 release; and lastly the original Cooking Mama(Wii, DS) (2006) has out sold all sequel versions combined.

EEDAR believes Nintendo understands the mindset of its consumers the best, which is why Nintendo rarely releases sequels within the same generation and, if they do, they are years apart. ... Of course this rule is not absolute for all casual and mainstream titles, some sequels do outperform the original, but in the overwhelming majority of cases, sequels on the Wii just cannibalize the potential sales of its predecessor. For reference, if the above examples were not proof enough, Call of Duty: World at War (2008) only outsold Call of Duty 3 by the smallest of margins and the most recent Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Reflex (2009) is currently on track to under-perform against World at War.
The point is, Wii gamers won't just buy a sequel because they liked the first game.  It needs to do something drastically different to be seen as a worthwhile purchase.  Even if the gamer loved the original title if the second one is just more-of-the-same then it's not going to sell.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Yeah, Boom Blox 2 should have waited longer before releasing. The first had a good sales momentum going that was killed by the sequel. I own and love both, but it's so similar that they could have waited longer and made more changes to the game or added more stuff before releasing it. M+ could have added a lot of interesting mechanics.

Though remember that an insider that worked on Boom Blox reported that VGCharts over guessed the first games sales and under guessed the second games sales.

Well, games are expensive so if they want to convince you to spend another 50€ they better make it give you something drastically new. Maybe a problem there is that hardcore games "run out", they have a defined singleplayer mode and when you beat that it's over and you consider buying a sequel, with an endless game there's no point where it ends and you need a new one?

It'll slow burn and sell to about 10% of new owners.  It'll probably get an international version before this year ends. And then that'll go to the Playstation The Best Collection soon after.

Such is the life of a typical PS FF title. I can expect sales to explode in America since the FF fanbase here will pretty much buy anything no matter how stupid the game is.

But will it cover the astronomical development costs? Maybe.

Maybe NSMB's rise has came to a stop and the other Mario's have decided to gang up and give him a pummeling?

You are right, since the last chart NSMBW has passed Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese SMB 2, aka The Lost Levels) and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Up next is Super Mario World at 3.55 million.

Who was making the charts for New Super Mario Brothers Wii? Was somebody from NWR making them, or were they coming from somewhere else?

The bet includes the NPD numbers for January so we don't know that yet. But it looks like Modern Warfare 2 will be about 1 million ahead.

The first Super Mario Bros was 6 million right? but only in Japan? Is it known what it is world wide?

10 Million from NSMBW? thats like 500 million smackers! Did Nintendo really make nearly half a billion off of one game?

40 million worldwide, but it was a pack-in outside of Japan.

No. Development, manufacturing, exchange rates, retailer cuts, marketing, etc. all factor into the cost of selling the game. It's probably more like 200 million... which is still an inconceivable amount.
