Sperm donor
« on: August 15, 2011, 10:03:06 PM »
Would anybody here ever be willing to be a sperm donor? If a woman (doesn't really matter who) asked you to help get her pregnant because she can't afford to get a professional donation, so she would want you to impregnate her the old fashioned way but then walk away and have no involvement with her or the child, would you do it?

Nada.  For the simple fact that, no matter the circumstance, I can still be held legally and financially liable for the child.

What if she didn't want your name or your address so she couldn't track you down?

TJ, your girlfriend asked me this very question last night...

I was gonna say he should ask his dad how that situation turned out.... but I think that would have been too fucked up a response*.

Serious answer: As Uncle Bob already said, Hell No.
not even with legal documentation stating that I have no responsibility what so ever.

You can't have legal documentation stating this - because one parent cannot sign away the child's rights in this manner.

Actually, as long as the other person involved (usually the biological mother, though it can be a grandparent or whoever is the legal guardian) agrees to it, the father can legally give up his parental rights (which includes any obligations, but also means the father can not visit the child either).

Nada.  It's been proven time and again in court.  The mother (or other guardian) cannot sign away the child's rights - which include the obligations of the parent to support the child.  The closest you can get is adoption - but even then, there are cases where the court has ruled in favor of the child and required the biological parent(s) to pay support for the child.

Best to just not produce any offspring, period. The world is over populated as is. No need to put further strain on our resources. ;)

Which is why I said "not even with legal documentation".

I think there was even a case of a woman getting in vitro and then getting child support from the sperm donor.
[ggogle search: Sperm Donor Child Support]
I also remember a case where a woman stole a used condom after oral sex with her ex-bf and impregnated herself, then won a child support case even though the man didn't have sex with the woman. [story]

So there is no way I would willing consent to having a child then expect some document to shield me from parental obligations somewhere down the line. I'm also never donating sperm until the law gets clear on that whole issue too.

I wouldn't want the knowledge that there I had a kid out there that I didn't know.  I would always be wondering how they were doing.  It would drive me nuts.

And then there is whole support payments issue.  The hell I want to EVER pay money to raise a child when I have no real say in how the child is raised.  Even the idea of getting married, having kids and later getting divorced is something I fear.  I would never want to willingly put myself in that sort of situation.

In the US you can donate sperm in centers anonymously. Neither the woman or child will ever see what you look like, know your name, or anything else that could identify you. I know it's different in the UK now since they made it so the woman will know your identity.
