General Gaming / Tecmo, Koei absorbed
« on: February 09, 2011, 12:30:38 PM »
On top of the recent news that Konami is closing down its Hudson Soft subsidiary, today Tecmo Koei announced it will absorb its Tecmo and Koei studios as of April 1. Since the companies merged in 2009, they were kept as separate development teams until now. The two groups will now be merged together. http://www.industrygamers.com/news/tecmo-koei-to-absorb-tecmo-and-koei-development-groups/

General Chat / Good camcorder
« on: February 05, 2011, 12:53:40 AM »
I am looking to get a good camcorder (with camera functions too). I want one that is relatively cheap, under $200, and would like it to be compact if possible (like a flip one). I don't know anything about technical specs though, does anyone here have any recommendations? It would be for personal use, so I don't need anything like 12 megapixels or stuff like that which professionals would want.

Looks like you mixed up the SML and LOZ threads.

Was there any mention of the GBC version ever coming out on the service?

General Gaming / CoD: Black Ops to charge for dedicated servers
« on: September 14, 2010, 01:03:39 PM »
This only applies to the PC version, so I am posting it here. A small percentage of people complained last year when Activision Blizzard did not do dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. They have sort of listened. Activision announced today that the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops WILL have dedicated servers, but for a price.

They announced that they are partnering up with gameservers.com to "rent" dedicated servers. Ranked servers will be $14.95 a month with a max of 18 players per server, unranked servers will be $0.99 a month with a max of 24 players. You can save 5% if you pre-purchase 3 months, 10% with 6 months, and 15% with 12 months.

You won't have to rent a dedicated server to play the game, but they are touting that doing so will provide you with the ability to kick players out, ban players, and configure it how you want. I am not a PC gamer, but this seems lame considering that they seem to be the only ones doing this and it is purely a money matter.

Here is the story, BTW: http://www.industrygamers.com/news/call-of-duty-black-ops-will-have-dedicated-servers-for-a-price/

Nintendo Gaming / DS price drop
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:19:37 AM »
Sites are already speculating that this is a hint at the 3DS price, but Nintendo just issued a press release stating that they are dropping the price of the DS. Effective September 12, Nintendo is dropping the price of the DSi to $149.99 and the DSi XL to $169.99. The DS Lite will remain at $129.99.

They also say that the DS has sold 42.3 million systems in the United States.

General Chat / Dying relatives
« on: August 09, 2010, 09:03:31 PM »
Has anyone here had to deal with a close relative dying? My father was diagnosed with salivary cancer a year ago (we think he had it longer than that, but he refused to tell us) and his condition started becoming worse, to the point where he was bedridden and being fed with a tube.  Two days ago he was hospitalized after having a stroke and a seizure. Today my family got terrible news when the doctor said that he estimates my dad has less than two weeks to live. I am not afraid to admit that I had to hold back tears when I heard this (and had some while typing this, especially since I am only 23 and don't want to lose him so soon). I have never had anyone really close to me die before. I am not trying to get any sympathy, I just wanted to see how other people here have dealt with someone close to them dying.

General Chat / Twitter wars
« on: June 01, 2010, 12:15:27 AM »
I only signed up for Twitter a few months ago (as I had no interest in it before), but I go through various periods where I update it on a regular basis and then not at all. Anyone here have one? Mine is @TJSpyke

Today I just had my first "war" with a fellow Tweeter, two of them at the same time actually. One of them was a Conservative (I am a very big liberal on most issues), it was over Glenn Beck and the Iraq war (specifically Bush's comments to justify it, but I don't want to get too political here). I am no stranger to heated Internet arguments, I have been blocked on Wikipedia almost 20 times for it, but this was the first time on Twitter. It's always fun (although sometimes very annoying) to get into arguments with someone online, especially when you know they are serious and not just joking. Anyone else get into a serious argument with someone online?

Nintendo Gaming / Electroplankton DSiWare
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:05:12 PM »
I just got a DSi and bought 2000 Nintendo points. I was thinking about some of the Electroplankton games (they are 200 points each), but I was wondering if anybody here as played some of them and could suggest whether they are worth getting (if any). I already know that they are more of a software app than games.

Are there any wrestling fans here? Specifically, the current product. It would be nice to be able to talk about what is happening on Raw, SmackDown, NXT, Impact, etc. with others here on the board. If there is interest, we could even have live chats during the shows (like in a chat room).

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Fit turns woman into sex addict
« on: April 15, 2010, 11:14:24 AM »
Sorry for this, but I found it funny. A woman in the United Kingdom is claiming that she has the urge to have sex up to 10 times a day after falling off her Wii Balance Board. Her doctor has diagnosed her with persistent sexual arousal syndrome (PSAS), which is believed to be caused as a result of nerve damage or as a side effect  to certain drugs. Unlike nymphomania or hypersexuality, PSAS is a spontaneous condition of the genitals that is most often not linked to sexual desire. Now she says she becomes sexually aroused from subtle noises or vibrations such as cell phones and claims that it now takes 10+ sexual sessions each day  to bring relief to her condition.

How much you wanna bet that she was like this before and juts now claims it's because of Wii Fit? Anyways here is the original story reported in the Toronto Sun (although it's been reported in other reliable outlets as well): http://www.torontosun.com/entertainment/videogames/2010/04/14/13582661.html

General Gaming / PS3 losing Linux
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:12:20 AM »
Sony has announced that one of the changes made in the April firmware update (which will be required to access the PlayStation Network, play certain games, etc.), is that they are removing the "Install other OS" option. This is the feature that let people install Linux and similar systems, which also let people develop homebrew games. They claim it will improve the system for consumers, which is obvious bull. The only people who benefit from removing it (which is what they touted as one of the major features of the system at launch and why it was supposedly wortth $500/$600) is Sony, since this feature is what allowed people to pirate games and is how that guy hacked the PS3 recently. I personally have never installed another OS, but there was no reason to actually remove it (at least when they removed BC they could say it saved them money, even if it was only like $1 per system).

Has anybody here actually installed another OS on their PS3? The reports I am reading sounds like it will disable them eith the update (rather than just stopping you from installing again), but I can't verify that.

Nintendo Gaming / Buy Wii Shop Channel games without points
« on: March 28, 2010, 09:43:04 PM »
I'm sure most of you know that last year Amazon started selling download codes for the WiiWare game World of Goo, this allowed you to buy the game without having to buy Nintendo Points (which would have left you with 500 points). Nintendo now seems to be doing this, at least with 2 games. Nintendo is allowing you to buy the Virtual Console game Super Mario Bros. 3 and the WiiWare game Pokémon Rumble right from their online website, which will give you a code to enter in the Wii Shop Channel (meaning you could just pay the $5 +sales tax to buy SMB3 rather than having to buy 1000 points).  It's a start at least, hopefully it does well enough to encourage Nintendo to eventually offer the entire Wii Shop Channel library like this.

General Gaming / Forcing red light
« on: February 05, 2010, 02:51:13 PM »
Is there a way to force a Xbox 360 to get 3 red lights? The disc drive on my system seems to be shot (it will not read any discs, it just says "Open Tray") and I don't want to pay Microsoft $100 to repair it.

General Gaming / XBLA recommendations
« on: January 30, 2010, 07:12:45 PM »
I know people don't really like these, but I just bought my first Microsoft points and am trying to figure out what to do with them (I got a 1600 point card). I already rules out worthless crap like Avatar accessories and themes/pics. Of the games I own, the only DLC I could see myself liking is the Crackdown one (that adds several new vehicles, a new weapon, new game type, and new Achievements).

I am almost certain to get games though. I was thinking maybe Peggle since I played the PSN demo and really loved it, which would take care of 800 points (I might get the Peggle Nights expansion later). The other 800 I was thinking maybe some classic arcade games like Dig Dug, Smash TV, or Root Beer Tapper.

Any recommendations? I already have both XBLA discs Microsoft has released, so don't mention Pac-Man: Championship Edition, Uno, Feeding Frenzy, Boom Boom Rocket, Luxor 2, Bejeweled 2, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Wik: Fable of Souls, Hardwood Backgammon, Outpost Koloki X, Texas Hold'em Poker. I also plan to get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, so no games included on that.

General Gaming / Sega Superstars Tennis
« on: January 20, 2010, 01:35:34 PM »
I know this is for the Wii too, but this is about the Xbox 360 version. I know the game got mediocre reviews, but is it at least worth the $5 GameStop is charging for it? GameStop has this game bundled with the Xbox Live Arcade disc for $4.99 (I already have the XBLA disc though). The reviews seemed to say that it wasn't terrible, just that it was mediocre.

Nintendo Gaming / Castlevania: Rondo of Blood freed from Japan
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:45:00 PM »
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (which Konami previously said wouldn't be released outside of Japan because it is text-heavy and Nintendo wouldn't allow them to translate it) has been rated by the OFLC (Australia's rating system).

http://www.oflc.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5c2433d416948a0bca25759f00820d25/e7973fa7423de182ca2576940057f167!OpenDocument&Highlight=2,Castlevania

Also getting rated today was Ironclad (which was a Neo Geo game that was never released outside of Japan, but if you put it in a US system it would play and even display a English title screen):

General Gaming / Best cheap XBLA games?
« on: August 16, 2009, 12:07:36 AM »
I am thinking about getting some XBLA games. I have up to $10 to spend. Any recommendations? I should note that I already have "Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged, Vol. 1" (which contains Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, Wik: Fable of Souls, Bejeweled 2, Outpost Kaloki X, Hardwood Backgammon, and Texas Hold 'Em) and the Xbox Live Arcade compilation disc that comes with the Xbox 360 Arcade bundle (which includes Pac-Man: Championship Edition, Uno, Luxor 2, Feeding Frenzy, and Boom Boom Rocket).

General Chat / Billy Mays passes away
« on: June 28, 2009, 02:36:20 PM »
In a week where we already lost Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, celebrity spokesman Billy Mays died in his sleep this morning at age 50. Mays is well known for his beards and booming voice that he used to help sell products like OxiClean and Kaboom. He also has a show on Discovery Channel with fellow pitchman Anthony Sullivan called "Pitchmen". He just appeared on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brian" a couple of weeks ago.

Today it was announced that ZeniMax Media (parent company of Bethesda Softworks) has purchase long time independent developer id Software. This will not affect exisiting publishing deals though, which means that Electronic Arts will still publish Rage and Activision Blizzard will still publish Wolfenstein. id was founded in 1991, so I wonder if the economy made them finally agree to be bought?

General Gaming / Major publisher to stop supporting PS3?
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:10:23 PM »
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has said that if the PS3 continues to sell as poorly as it is right now, they might stop supporting the PS3 (and the PSP too).

This is not an analyst, the is the head of the largest third party publisher (they overtook EA last year) stating that they are seriously thinking about stopping support of Sony systems. The PS3 and PSP are already gonna finish last this gen, but could the loss of Activison Blizzard kill any chance of a comeback and further cement its last place status? We have seen in the past how losing third party support can kill a system (like when the N64 lost Square Soft and Namco, although Namco eventually started supporting it).
