Does the Switch have a chance of passing the PS4 lifetime sales in Japan? If it doesn't does that deflate the argument Japan has abandoned consoles for handhelds argument? Or does the Switch being a hybrid break the rules and no matter how well it does it won't change the narrative?

I think if the Switch outsells the PS4, it should definitely cause some reconsideration about the importance of power and its role when discussing portability. Japan is a portable country. When I lived there, I brought my 3DS everywhere, and I got Streetpass hits in numbers that you would only see at Nintendo-specific events, maybe certain conventions. Every day. If the Switch is going to outsell the PS4, it is going to be because it is portable. But, that also brings up the notion that even a portable device can have relatively impressive tech and a high price level as long as it has enough to justify that notion. Like, the Switch has built-in co-op capabilities. It can also function as a television-based device. Some might argue that the Vita had a lot of the same potential as the Switch, and that's true- it did. But it also had a lot of things wrong with it that negatively impacted its sales- in almost every region except Japan. It couldn't function as well in other markets because it very rarely had a true landmark hit- and even when it did, that game was ported to their home console (I'm talking about Gravity Rush) or had a console version that was arguably superior. Nintendo still has the power of their IP backing them, and they've been quick to capitalize on the recent success and buzz of said IP.

But yes, whereas Vita's library and memory issues were its Achilles' Heel, Nintendo seems to be avoiding that. Seems to be, of course. There's no doubt the Switch had one of the most impressive launch years for a Nintendo product ever- hell, we might be able to extend that comparison to other consoles, too- but it is important that they maintain the momentum. Now, Pokemon and Smash Bros. are going to be able to do that. If they hold off on Fire Emblem and announce an Animal Crossing title, that might make their 2019 good, too. But it does largely depend on how hot they can keep their hot new thing, especially with the daunting announcement of a potential PS5 on the horizon.

Switch can outsell PS4 this year if they keep it up. As soon as Pokémon is released, that's when Switch takes over, if it hasn't by that point.

There's not really much left to debate in Japan.  The Switch sold 4 million systems in one year and is now only 2.5 million behind the PS4.  Nintendo still has yet to release Animal Crossing, Pokemon, 2D Mario and Smash Bros which are bigger in Japan then anything else they've released on the Switch so far.

Assuming Smash Bros and Pokemon both come out this year, the Switch will surpass the PS4 by the end of this year in Japan.  Even if it doesn't do it by the end of December, it'll easily pass it come Spring the way current sales are going.  Yeah I doubt Sony cares since they've reclaimed the West from Microsoft which is all they cared about, but when it comes to Japan, it's basically going to be a literal Nintendo Land for the foreseeable future.  Unless Sony is willing to make the PS5 a hybrid as well, there's nothing they can do to be competitive in Japan anymore.  Of course even if the PS5 is a hybrid, as the DS and 3DS show, Nintendo still has the edge when it comes to IP's that the Japanese audience care about.

It's pretty easy to sum up the brilliance of the Switch.  Japan likes portables, the West likes consoles.  The Switch is both and gives both markets the product they want.

I think the PS4 will still survive well as a high end console for the Western market.  But the Xbox brand is screwed.  Sony and MS have such similar products there really is no reason for the two of them to co-exist.  The PS3 survived because it could fill the HD console niche in Japan and the Xbox 360 couldn't.  But without being the high end console of choice in the West what role does the Xbox have?  During the Cube/PS2/Xbox era consoles had enough exclusives that they all had a reason to exist.  That's not the case now.

Thats true. Looking at the non-Nintendo games I am interested in, they are all on PS4. Anything big on XBox is also available on PS4 aside from Halo, and I don't think that will be as much of a draw in the future as it was in previous gens. Its a shooter in an ocean of multiplatform shooters.


Really, the only positive draw XBox has right now is their openness to cross-system play, and that just further means I don't need to get an XBox1.

Microsoft has never been shy at trying new things to innovate their system.  I think they'll keep trying.  They will probably have the superior hardware but as long as Sony doesn't get full of themselves again and think they can pull a PS3 again they will stay ahead in the west.  Nintendo never worries about what the other companies are doing. They just do their thing and hope others will join them.

Microsoft needs to keep the Xbox brand alive for the sake of protecting PC gaming. The synergy between the two platforms is more valuable to them than the actual hardware sales. There isn't currently a true viable alternative to PC gaming in that market but that doesn't stop other companies from trying. They can't afford to lose one of the few things keeping Windows relevant.

There it is! BotW Switch physical finally crosses the million seller mark. Wow.

It doesn't look like Labo is going to be taking off in Japan at it's current mark and rate of sales.

How high can Splatoon 2 sales go?

I think Labo needs to be a little bit more robust as a line, and that Nintendo kind of blew their load early with the first two kits. If they had released them and whatever kits they have planned for the holiday season (let's be honest, they're going to have kits for the holiday season), they could have generated a bit more momentum.

Do we know how Labo is selling in North America?  My local Walmart's Switch section is jammed to the gills with it.  Looks like they've sold like two of them.

They're stacking up at my local Target as well.

I wonder if it was too early to unleash Labo on people.  It's more geared to kids, and I don't think the Switch it quite at "buy for my young kid" level yet.

Nintendo is hoping Labo will be a slow burn.  When Brain Training was first released in Japan, it didn't lite up the sales at first but after months when word of mouth got around it eventually exploded long after it's first release.  This is what lead to them deciding to release it in the rest of the world.

The Variety Kit has at least sold somewhat decent according to American and Japanese charts so depending on how kids and families are talking about it to others, sales might improve in the coming months.  I don't know anyone with it so I have no idea how the target audience is reacting to it.
