Nice debut for Kirby, it even helped cause a 50% increase in Wii sales.

This might be the last time we see a Wii game top the charts.

This might be the last time we see a Wii game top the charts.

Dragon Quest X might when it comes out on August 2nd.  It'll depend on how the fanbase feels about it being an MMO instead of a more traditional game and how big NSMB 2 second week sales will be.

After seven years on the market, Mario Kart DS is going to surpass 4 million sales this year most likely.

If you add up all the iterations of Monster Hunter 3, I wonder what the total sales would be there.  I know the original release on the Wii was over a million and the first release on the PSP went over 4 million.  If you add in the budget version, the PS3 version and the nearly 1.5 million for the 3DS version, how close has it come to 8 million in sales in Japan alone?

Skywars Sword has sold only 337,000 copies to date in Japan. I woder how it did in Europe and North America? Did they make money on it, considering the long development time?

Then compare the Skyward Sword sales with some of Nintendo's more "casual" offerings that are in the millions. It's depressing. We complain about Nintendo not developing enough triple-A, deep adventure or RPG games or whatnot, but business is business, I guess. The numbers don't lie.

There is no PS3 or PSP versions. Portable 3rd is a different game completely from Tri.

Weren't the sales of Twilight Princess somewhat low in Japan as well?  Japan doesn't seem to like Zelda anymore.  That's disconcerning because Nintendo really cares a lot about the Japanese market.  They really don't seem to like how Metroid is not popular in Japan, regardless of it's popularity in the US and that is most likely reason we got Other M.  I would hate if Nintendo felt the need to cater Zelda towards the Japanese audience.  Let Zelda be Zelda for Zelda fans.

Of course Skyward Sword's sales could also be affected by it coming out so late on a system that has long been written off as the "casual" system.  Nintendo did spend five years scaring away the very audience for such a game.  I don't think any sales figures for core games this late into the Wii's life should be taken into account in regards to decisions about what games to bring to the Wii U.  The Wii has been a barren desert and one can assume that can have a negative effect on the sales of games.

Though if Nintendo interprets this as motion control not being well received in Zelda I'll be fine with that. :)

No, they don't like home console Zelda anymore.  Phantom Hourglass sold over 900,000 in Japan and Spirit Tracks sold around 700,000.  This says there's still a good sized Zelda fanbase in Japan but they prefer the series on a handheld device, like a lot of other Nintendo series.  It just goes to show how much of the Japanese gaming audience has moved to handheld only gaming and home consoles are becoming more and more niche.

Skywars Sword has sold only 337,000 copies to date in Japan. I woder how it did in Europe and North America? Did they make money on it, considering the long development time?

Skyward Sword sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide which is higher then half the Zelda games ever made.  Zelda has never sold as many copies as games like Mario and Pokemon and of course is never going to sell as much as Wii Sports and Wii Fit which were designed with complete mass market appeal.  For the type of series it is, Zelda continues to sell just fine.

It's probably much higher now since it sold 3.42 million as of December 2011.

Yeah Zelda games usually have pretty good legs.  Skyward Sword should easily be able to pass the 4 million mark and that's while still at $50 and on the dead Wii.  When Nintendo eventually lowers the price to $20 and the Wii U comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if Skyward Sword is able to even pass the 5 million mark.

Considering Ocarina of Time 3DS out sold Skyward Sword in Japan Zelda isn't dead yet. I wonder if Skyward Sword broke even. It is the most expensive Nintendo game to date.

@Luigi Dude
I believe Skyward sword has dropped from $50 in the US. It's probably one of the few high profile Nintendo games to have a quick price drop this generation (besides Other M of course)

Syward Sword is still $49.99 in the US, at least with MSRP. Nintendo gets that MSRP regardless of what the retailer sells it for. A retailer could sell the game for $1, but that still paid Nintendo ~$42 for it (so the retailer takes the loss). Nintendo made over $100 million on the game, so it's almost guaranteed they made a profit.

Wow, I'm surprised to see Harvest Moon so high on that list, I've always enjoyed the series but thought of it as a little more niche than that.

Marvelous are absolutely killing it with the 3DS. Both Harvest Moon and Ruin Factory have sold outstanding (Compared to other entries in the franchise). On the other hand Level 5 haven't been going that well. Guild 01 bombed, so did Girl's RPG and Time Travelers.

Another surprise is the return of Fire Emblem. 420,000 is amazing for the series. Depending on how Nintendo market it it could atleast double that amount when released in the West next year. Hopefully 3DS Ambassadors got sucked in with Sacred Stones and will get the game.

According to Famitsu the 3DS LL has sold 192k units in 2 days.
NSMB2 has sold 413k in the same amount of time (It's unclear if that includes digital sales or not)

So the XL has sold more in 2 days than the Vita has in over 3 months.

Famitsu doesn't track digital sales, so that would be "no" (not sure if they count the download cards though). If those numbers are accurate, that is pretty damn good for both.

How many 3DS AC Adapter units were sold though? That's the real question.

I'm only a little surprised at Mario's numbers. I did expect slightly better for the XL, but not by much (and probably without good reason...).

I hear Dragon Quest X launches in Japan today. No idea if first-day numbers are possible to obtain, but I'd be fascinated to know how this game does - there are factors for and against it's success relative to earlier instalments in the franchise. Moreover, it might inform whether the game ever makes it to the West (and I mean at all, not on Wii, as only the Wii U version really has a chance of being localised.)

Meh. Guild 01 was a really poor concept, in my opinion. I heard a lot of good stuff about Time Travelers though, so that's a shame.

I doubt there's really THAT many ambassadors to generate hype for Fire Emblem. But, regardless, that game pushes the 3DS' features and capabilities, so I hope it gets promoted well.

Thanks to a Twitter link from Mr. Bivens (Japan correspondent), I was able to watch a live stream of a guy playing DQX this morning. After viewing his playtime, I'm even more excited about this game...

I'm a huge MMO fan, and it looks like DQX may take things back to basics a bit - which is absolutely fantastic, if you ask me. As someone who's been playing FFXIV since launch (catastrophic launch, mind you), and is personally looking quite forward to v2.0's release this September/October, DQX makes me raise a bit of a brow at FFXIV. Of course, like others have already mentioned, there's really no way the Wii version of DQX will get released in the states, but a Wii U version most definitely could. And when/if that day comes, I'll be picking up this one up. No doubt.

Battle system looks to be a mix of real time and menu based, but the one aspect I wasn't able to really notice was if there was a concrete targeting system built in to battle mechanics. FFXIV's is excellent (as was FFXI's, too), but I noticed the guy's character not being able to strafe around his opponent. I dunno, though... I guess we'll find out more info in the coming months.

But yeah, game looks great.
I like Nintendo more than j00!
