Truth be told, if Nintendo set up a system like Xbox live (see: a really robust online gaming app/hub) I would gladly pay for access.

For some reason I thought you said 'tub' instead of 'hub'.

But I wouldn't pay anything for online ever. Blizzard has been running their excellent battle.net service for games like Starcraft and Diablo for free for the last decade or so, and Sony's service is apparently free as well.

Yeah, in general if you don't want serious responses then post in Funhouse.  We like to discuss about anything on its merits.  Though it degrades a lot.

Well let's discuss then...

Do you think there will ever be a fee? And who do you think will impose it (Certianly not Nintendo)?

The only way I could see a fee being imposed to play online would be if an MMO came out on the Wii (which is highly doubtful).

Is it now?

Who's to say Nintendo wouldn't do it? Maybe not impose the fees, but they certainly could have an MMO in the works. It could be something totally original or some Mii/Pokemon hybrid.

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence, afterall.

Well lets look at an MMO from the fee standpoint, even one made by Nintendo. The concept (whatever it would be) would have to revolve around a environment in which a, well, massive amount of people could play on. This results in the need for dedicated servers, moderators, and a development team that could update content / fix content should it need to be done. This would result in a financial hit to the company if they had no monthly subscription fee.

At the very least there would have to be some sort of revenue from the game itself for Nintendo to make the venture worth their while.

That and the lack of HD for the Wii and it's "lack of power" (in developers eyes) when compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 makes it a less than ideal breeding ground for MMO type games outside of Nintendo.

Which two games are online? Strikers and Mario Kart Wii?

The fact that SSBB's alleged online portion hasn't been mentioned in a while scares the hell out of me.

Not to mention the storage capacity they'd need for updates ands stuff. Are we scheduled to get a hard drive accessory (or USB Mass Storage support) anytime within the near future?

To be fair, it's a lot easier to control hackers when it's a closed system (e.g. console), and XBL has been out a lot longer than Sony's service. That, and Sony doesn't like making games anymore. No more games. Games are so last-gen.

Yeah I did include the storage stuff albeit brief UERD "That and the lack of HD for the Wii...".

Though, arguably, they could do a bundle like they did with PS2 and FFXI and it could connect to the system via USB or something.

Regardless, I don't see Nintendo EVER releasing an MMO for Wii. As much as I want to see a Pokemon MMO, it just isn't likely to happen.

In an interview with Steven Totilo<sp?> @ minE3, Reggie all but said there was an online portion of SSBB.
He said they would announce more regarding SSBB in the near future and to keep checking the Dojo for updates.
The way he dodged the question, to me, sounds like they want to save it as a surprise for a later date.
So don't be too scared, as it sounds like its coming and soon.

I agree. If they really did want a MMO for the system, they'd probably ask a second or third party that was already thinking about an MMO to develop it for the Wii. Did Sony or Microsoft ever develop a first-person MMO? I can't recall them ever doing so.

Yeah I agree with Blacknmild.

That and the fact that it was stated from the big guy himself, Sakurai, that the game was created with the purpose of getting the Smash series online.

It'll be online, I don't think they will disappoint. They aren't stupid, they know how important it is to have this game online and I am sure the extra year of development time allowed them to perfect whatever online set up they have.

lol.  I think Sony is now making more games themselves then before.
Anyways.

I would't say a fee is out there.  Remember the only online Gamecube game had a fee. (While I enjoyed PSO I don't think there was anything in there that really justified the the price.)  Though I do hope Nintendo will beef up their current "online" offerings.  I mean having to go to another website to see gameplay videos for VC game is weak sauce.

Ah no worries.

About the second or third parties I dunno, I think Nintendo is just REALLY gun-shy about making online content with their franchises where anyone can interact with anyone else and talk/type to one another. Another reason why we will probably never ever see a Pokemon MMO.

Maybe they would intrust a second party to a brand new kind of MMO? That could be possible.

Oh and I don't think Sony or MS ever did any sort of MMO (first party speaking).

UERD, you had it right, other people have it wrong, for some stupid reason

OFFICIAL FORUM ABBREVIATION USAGE:

HD = High Definition
HDD = HarD Drive (Hard Disk Drive)

[/the confusion]

Call it what you want, but abbreviate it accordingly. end the confusion.
