E3 May Not Return to Los Angeles
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:41:57 PM »

A new stadium in LA could stamp out future shows in the area.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30664

The Electronic Entertainment Expo may not return to its usual location in Los Angeles next year, the LA Times reports.

Michael Gallagher, president of the Entertainment Software Association, has said that if issues with the construction of Farmer’s Field are not resolved immediately, he may be forced to hold the trade show elsewhere. Although Gallagher did not comment directly on what other cities he has been in talks with, executives close to the ESA said that Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco are potential locations for the next E3.

The construction of Farmer’s Field would cause the Los Angeles Convention Center to be redesigned, with the West Hall being demolished to make room for the stadium. A replacement hall would be built above Pico Boulevard that would sit neighboring the current South Hall.

“We need assurance on things like square footage, the quality of the space, the ease of loading and unloading equipment, signage throughout the convention center for marketing and sponsorships,” Gallagher said. “We love being in Los Angeles, but we also have a show to put on.”

Although E3 has typically been held in Los Angeles for most of its existence, it has also been held in Atlanta, Santa Monica, and even Tokyo.

I noticed that the usual "See You Next Year" banner was absent from this year's E3 exit. There was only a "Thank You" banner.

There was an E3 this year? Didn't notice due to the lack of game announcements this past week.

New York! New York! New York! Or Tokyo, but I don't have enough money to fly there, but it would be awesome.

I'd love for it to hit NYC, but the Javitz Center might not be big enough to house it, even with the recent expansion. I could be wrong, but I'd think San Fran or Chicago would be more likely.

Isn't convention center space booked years in advance? If a deal at LACC can't be reached, is there a possibility that there will be no E3 (or big E3) for a few years?

Of course, I hope it comes to SF. It would be more convenient for more industry people. But, it would probably push the Moscone Center past its limits; they'd have to put heavier restrictions of the number of attendees.

Austin, TX would be a perfect venue. There's actual developers and publishers there, an incredible nightlife, and it would be dirt cheap for everyone attending. Austin has a decent showing for video games for SXSW and GDC, E3 would be a perfect fit.

Why not move it to Atlanta, Georgia?  If I remember correctly, the very early E3s were held in Atlanta.

The first ones were at LA, then they went to Atlanta for two years. People who have went to LA and Atlanta ones tend to say that the Atlanta ones were terrible and I see that as reason why it won't happen.

because Atlanta doesn't have Skyline. I propose that all future e3s be required to be within 20 miles of at least 10 skyline locations.

Aren't both Microsoft and NOA headquartered in Redmond Washington? It would be more convenient for both of them if it was there or nearby in a place like Seattle.

It should totally go to New Orleans. I'd love the excuse to go home. Hell, I could probably let a few staffers crash, if they got me a ticket. . .

Yes, but many other companies/press are around SF, which is why Nintendo moved their PR office there and probably a big reason GDC is held there.

Exactly what I was going to point out. The Bay Area is home to lots of industry in the U.S., so even if they couldn't do SF, San Jose might also be a good fit and only slightly less of a convenience for me ;)

Come on, Erie, Pennsylvania! We just built a nice new convention center, we've got nice beaches, there are probably other benefits maybe.
