Splatoon and Mario Maker pretty much prove that the number one problem with the Wii U was the lack of exclusive and unique titles for the system.  Had the Wii U launched with both games the system would easily have sold over 30 million units by now with both games being 10 million plus sellers each.

See Nintendo, when there's no cheaper handheld alternative to your home console titles, people will actually be willing to buy the more expensive home console again.

Yeah, if Super Mario Maker had come out at launch and Splatoon holiday 2013 it might have been a whole different ballgame. The killer apps came too late to do their jobs.

I don't think they would have sold *that* much better if they came out at launch. Maybe pushed the console a little bit, but not as much as people are assuming.

It wouldn't have won the generation by any means, but I think if those came out earlier the system could realistically have ended up in GameCube territory instead of being a flop.

Yeah Mario Maker alone at launch would have justified the Gamepad and made the system much easier to market.  "Use our new controller to make your own 2D Mario game and play other peoples levels from around the world" would have gotten a lot more attention then, "Pay us $400 so you can now play a 2D Mario just like the one you bought 3 months ago on a tablet controller while the rest of your family watches TV."

That wouldn't have stopped 3rd parties from mostly ignoring it. The system is flawed, wasn't future proofed at all and unfortunately as much as I love the system and has given me over 1000 hours of entertainment, was destined to mainstream failure from the start. Nothing Nintendo could have realistically done after it's release would have elevated it above more than Gamecube levels of success, they really would have needed to gone completely back to the drawing board.

I think it's also worth pointing out that the system OS was complete & utter dog**** at launch. Granted, it hasn't improved THAT much since, but at least games don't take 2 minutes to load from boot anymore.  Also, I don't think having Mario Maker at launch in place of NSMB U would have changed things too much. It's an even worse platformer due to primarily being a level editor, and NSMB 2 would still have come out on 3DS just a few months prior. Splatoon's a different matter, though. I think if that had come out at launch and proven the Wii U to be a viable competitive MP scene, the Wii U would at least be as big a failure as the GameCube was, rather than the biggest console failure Nintendo's ever had. I don't see it performing much better, though. At the end of the day, the Wii U was and is still ridiculously under-powered; overpriced; and incredibly late to the party, with a controller that doesn't really justify its existence. A few games shifted around on the board doesn't change that.

Thing is, I think the only reason Splatoon even happened is because the Wii U was bombing so badly that Iwata was willing to throw just about anything at the thing. In a universe where the Wii U isn't a colossal failure, I think the Splatoon  team's stuck making the billionth iteration of some 30-year old franchise instead. Nintendo's output on the Wii is proof enough of that.

The Wii U had fundamental design and marketing issues at launch that went well beyond its terrible launch lineup. It doesn't really matter if X game or Y game (many of which were risky projects only greenlit because nothing else was working on Wii U) were there at launch: the Nintendo of 2012 had no goddamn idea what to do with the Wii U. If you want to change the Wii U's fortunes, you'd have to go back to 2010 (when the Wii U was being designed) and replace the entire arrogant & incompetent Nintendo leadership, starting with Iwata. They designed the Wii U from a position of comfort, thinking that since they dominated so thoroughly with the Wii that they could just put out another gimmicky controller and that's all they had to do.

This is the Nintendo that thought one of the Wii U's top priorities should be keeping its electricity consumption low. This is the Nintendo that made sure its Wii U dev teams were so insulated from the outside world that they had no idea how far Sony & Microsoft's online infrastructures had developed, and the one who didn't have an efficient system in place for working with Western Wii U developers (source for the previous few statements).

It's nice to think of bold and risky games Nintendo could have had in the Wii U's early days, but that wasn't the Nintendo of 2012. Hell, they wouldn't have had the resources to put into those types of games anyway, since IIRC they were still putting all their resources into saving the 3DS around then.

You can usually get a feel for how well a console will do when you look at the pre-release hype/chatter. Wii had a lot of hype but it also had a lot of confusion, people were just unsure what to think. Wii U had no hype, it was a dud at launch because everyone outside ultra die hard Nintendo fans took one look at it and rolled their eyes. If it had some amazing first party Nintendo game at launch so what, Game Cube had that, so did N64 having the greatest game of all time at launch means nothing if you have to wait six months to get a follow up lackluster piece of slop or some mediocre game that gets over hyped by the fans but ignored by the larger masses. Wii U had anti-hype going in, it needed a lot more than just some AAA blockbuster mega hit to get the ball rolling because even a big AAA blockbuster mega hit by Nintendo means nothing to EA, Activision, and Ubisoft. especially when the userbase is front loaded with people who really don't care about those types of games. What you need is a console that people take one look at and do NOT have to settle or sit back and agonize over how the missing features will affect their enjoyment of the machine. If GC had just played DVD's from the start and maybe looked more like a traditional game console there wouldn't have been a stigma with it and despite how amazing it was it NEVER shook the stigma. Wii had the same stigma but it had a new market in retirement centers to cash in on, the types of customers who buy a machine like that once in a lifetime and then keep it until it breaks then they stuff it in a shoebox in the attic.

Maybe Wii had a large install base but it also had a huge chunk of the non-gamers snatching them up. Wii U had to appeal to the traditional gamer and it failed to do so falling hard to the ultra loyal Nintendo fan and then when that failed it went all in on Nostalgia and when that failed they finally rolled the dice with Spaltoon, so far the only real gamble software wise that actually paid off. Everything else from Mario Kart, Smash, to DKC, those were a given. Even the Zelda games we can always count on them bringing in the Zelda gamers, but are they really enough anymore when most of them seem to find satisfaction in the handheld space and hate on the console offerings?

Coming from a giant Zelda fan (my #1 game franchise without debate), personally I've always enjoyed Link's console adventure far more then the handhelds one. It's just that Skyward Sword was a dud. And almost every single Zelda game is on handheld now aside from three of the console ones. Not so much the Zelda fans are comfortable on handheld, that is just where they have been stuck.

That is kind of the whole problem, for the last few generations the consoles offerings have all, not just Zelda here, been varying degrees of disappointment whereas the handhelds get the games gamers are asking for, the Wii U was the first time they got both games and somehow it was still a dud so its not really so easy to pinpoint the "one" thing that is hurting Wii U so much as running in circles trying to figure out what could have been done differently.

GC was the same way, a lot of the console games were either crap or just token efforts but the games people wanted were either on GBA or DS. And I seem to recall that before WW HD that game was pretty hated for a long time too.

Wind Waker was disliked because of artstyle (disagree, but fair enough), tedious sailing (disagree, but fair enough), and the triforce collecting (tedious, but rupee gathering was not as bad as people make it seem). They fixed 2 of these points in the HD and the artstyle just grew on people overtime. But yeah it was hated.

Given the development history of Splatoon, I think it would still exist. But it would likely not have gotten as much of a marketing push as it has.

It absolutely astounds me that all ten of the top selling titles in 2015 were on Nintendo systems, but that is there audience. Though it's expected, it's still sad to see Happy House Arrest outsell Splatoon.
I am a toxic person engaging in toxic behavior.
