Yeah, I really dislike this movement to multiplatform. When the game is built around one console or uses renderware, we all kind of lose out. I have to agree with a poster from another forum--we didn't buy these console's to play the games on the other consoles. We spent hundreds of dollars for exclusives that tailor to the strengths of our preferred system.
I can understand that Sega is doing this mainly to get back on track (though the Sammy merger seems to be threatening the future of Sega right now anyway). But I really think exclusives are still the way to go, granted you do it in a smart manner. A lot of companies have made some poor choices along this route, which has prompted more multiplatform development. Capcom is good example of this. They put Maximo on the PS2, which instead of guarenteeing sales, this decision probably guarenteed that the game would be ignore by almost everyone except the hardcore and old school. It should've been on the GC. Sega has made some mistakes with Smilebit. I can see from a logistical standpoint why they decided to make Smilebit exclusive to the Xbox--these guys were quite good at using WindowCE on the Dreamcast so they could transition quickly to Xbox. However, the games they have produced have been ignored. JSRF should have saw it's debut on the PS2, and I think Panzer Dragoon Orta and GunValkire would've made nice splashes on the GC.
So far though, they have made good choices with the Cube. SMB1 and 2 were perfect for the system while Sonic has ironically found a good home on a Nintendo system. AV, Sonic Team, and Overwerks overall seem to have made a good home on the system. If they going to go multiplatform with Sonic, I hope they do give an edge on the GC. Whether that be from building from the ground up on the GC or utilizing GBA connectivity. They shouldn't forget the popularity of Sonic on the GC in a bid to try get Sonic to Pokemon levels of appeal. But since I also agree that this was an executive decision and not something that was decided by Naka and Sonic Team, I'm guessing we will see the edge going to the PS2 to maximize sales.
