Nintendo Gaming / Best games on WiiWare?
« on: August 22, 2009, 08:32:33 PM »
What are the best games on WiiWare? I haven't really been following up on the releases because I'm not big on download games, so I don't know much about what's good and what isn't. I'm going to read the reviews on this site of course but I want the opinions of more than one person. Here are some games I'm considering:

World of Goo
I've heard nothing but good things about this game and I enjoy a good puzzler, but is it really worth the 1,500 points? There are cheaper puzzle games on WiiWare.

Dr. Mario Online RX
I've always liked Dr. Mario but I have it for other systems, including Dr. Mario 64 which I believe is the best. Does this one offer up anything special besides the obvious online mode (which is enticing)?

Mega Man IX
The NES Mega Man games were the best in the franchise, though I don't know if I possess the necessary skill and determination these days. Besides, frankly I think the idea of a retro throwback is really lame and makes it seem like they missed the point of what made the originals so good.

I'm also considering Kirby's Dream Land 3 for SNES because the original is so expensive, and I love all of the other Kirby games I've played.

Choose one word from the list below and send it to me in a PM. If nobody else chooses the same word, you get one point. Once you send me your choice, you CANNOT change it, so choose wisely!

List:
Bastard
Damn
Bloody
Hell
Bitch

The round is over after 24 hours, so you have until 7:30 PM Eastern tomorrow to send in your choice. You can use this thread to discuss who you think might choose what and try to throw people off of what you chose.

Original Post:

Partly inspired by Thatguy's "Minority" game that he did a month ago, I've thought up a little forum game which could be interesting. If you'd like to play then sign up in this thread!

It's real simple: each round lasts a full day. I'll post a list of a certain number of swear (AKA "dirty") words, and each player chooses one of them by sending me a PM with their choice. If the chosen word was not chosen by any other player, that player earns a point. If a player chooses the same word as any other player, those players will not score a point.

The game will last for three rounds. The amount of players who sign up will determine how many words appear on the list. In the event of a tie, the game will continue for another round.

Signups will run until Wednesday around 7PM Eastern, which is when round 1 will begin.

The prize is a redemption code good for 200 Wii Points.

Anyone want to give it a shot?

NWR Forums Discord / Sponge mop or fabric mop?

Which type of mop do you prefer?

I myself use both actually. For everyday mopping I use a fabric mop because it has a larger cleaning area and it holds dirt better. For sticky spots or stains I use a sponge mop for its better scrubbing power.

Nintendo Gaming / Percentage of your Wii collection that's rated M.
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:15:06 PM »
With the recent talk of "mature" games on Wii I was just curious how many games owned by people here are rated "M".

I own just one, The House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return. I have five games rated "T" and three rated "E10", the rest are all "E".

"M" rated titles are rarely the type of games I like to play.

Hi all!

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Super Smash Brothers, the Nintendo 64 funfest where Nintendo worlds collide to create the ultimate party game. To celebrate this milestone, as well as its release on the Virtual Console, I’m hosting a special Wi-Fi get-together in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

THE TIME
See the poll, though I’m still not sure on this. If people want to try an earlier date then discuss that within this thread.

THE RULES
Nothing but the classics.
-Use only the characters who were featured in the first game.
-The only items in play will also be those from the first game. The item appearance can be set to anything besides “none”.
-Since the game doesn’t have any stages from the original, stage selection will be set to random. Please ensure that all stages are set to “on” in your random stage select menu.
-If using GameCube controller, please do not use the C-stick.

For those who missed the first game, here are the usable characters:
Captain Falcon
Donkey Kong
Fox
Jigglypuff
Kirby
Link
Luigi
Mario
Ness
Pikachu
Samus
Yoshi

And the items to be used are:
Barrel
Beam Sword
Bob-omb
Bumper
Capsule
Crate
Fan
Fire Flower
Green Shell
Hammer
Heart Container
Homerun Bat
Maxim Tomato
Motion-Sensor Bomb
PokéBall
Ray Gun
Red Shell

General Chat / ♥ Fireworks ♥
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:57:00 PM »
It’s that time of year again! Less than a week away from the US holiday of Independence Day!

This is probably my favourite holiday behind Christmas, because I love fireworks. I just bought mine the other day, though they are illegal in my state so I have to make the trek to a neighboring state in order to buy them.

I never get the expensive items like the mortars or tubes or repeaters or any of that, I just buy the smaller stuff. I like to get the spinners which make the flower patterns, they are very pretty. The flying items which spin into the air are beautiful as well. My favourite item would probably be roman candles. There is a pretty wide variety of them with different effects and colours, though I go with the more simple ones. Despite the warning label I always hold it in my hand and perform a little dance with it as it shoots.

I can’t stand firecrackers, all they do is make a bunch of noise. Anything which whistles is really annoying as well. Everything which just makes noise and is devoid of colour is dull and boring.

General Gaming / Displaying game boxes
« on: June 19, 2009, 05:57:13 PM »
As we all know, games for Nintendo cartridge systems used to come in cardboard boxes rather than plastic cases like the fancy disc games of today. They're not good for storage and many people threw them away, making some of the ones for certain games valuable.

Because of their artwork, I want to put the boxes on display somewhere in my gaming room. They would really add the atmosphere. But they are delicate little things and I am worried about what could happen to them if I leave them exposed. They could get dusty or dirty, something could get spilled onto them, some clumsy klutz could trip and fall on them, etc.

What should I do? Should I keep the boxes stored away so they don't get damaged? Or is there no point in even having them if I'm not going to enjoy them?

General Gaming / GameFAQs users fail at poll
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:19:59 AM »
I can't believe the early results of the current GameFAQs poll:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3510

Which company do you think had the best E3 this year?

Vote Accepted
Microsoft    30.42%    1086
Nintendo    20.62%    736
Sony    27.65%    987
It's too hard to pick one - all three were great    11.15%    398
None of them, all three were disappointing    10.17%    363
TOTAL VOTES          3570

Okay, so I can see the Microsoft fanbois voting in droves, but c'mon, no way Sony had the best showing at E3.

General Gaming / Complete Nintendo 64 Collection
« on: May 31, 2009, 10:28:26 PM »
I realize this topic may be considered conceited, but I’ve accomplished something which I would like to share.

After twelve years, I have finally collected every Nintendo 64 game released in North America.

Over the summer of 1997 is when I got the Nintendo 64. My first game was of course Super Mario 64, and just thinking of what it was like to experience that game for the first time gives me chills. I grew up with an NES and had only played the Super NES a few times before at a friend’s house, so moving from that to fully three-dimensional worlds was quite a jump. No game has ever captured my imagination like Super Mario 64. I also got Wave Race too but I thought it was boring at the time (I appreciate it now, so don’t hate on me okay?).

You probably know the affect the rest of Nintendo’s lineup had on me, it’s almost like a cliché to gush about how awesome the games are.

In 2003 I grew bored of waiting for good games to be released on the GameCube. Knowing just how awesome my library of 30 or so Nintendo 64 games was, I couldn’t help but wonder if there were any great ones which I had missed out on. The possibility was intriguing, and there was only one way to find out what I had passed up. On April 1st 2003 (no joke), I made it my goal to collect all 296 Nintendo 64 games released in North America.

Of course, it was difficult not to get distracted by all of the other great games out there for the other systems I owned; NES, SNES, GameCube, Game Boy, and more recently Wii purchases have all gotten in the way. If I were completely focused on the N64 this would have been accomplished a lot sooner.

The last game I bought was International Superstar Soccer 2000. It is quite possibly the rarest North American release, as it was available only to rent through Blockbuster.

After all is said and done, I am left feeling a strange mixture of happiness and sadness. Happy to have accomplished my goal, but sad that there are no games left to buy for my favourite system.

Words have never been my strong suit. Here are some pictures to express the madness if anyone is interested.

General Gaming / A cable trilemma
« on: May 18, 2009, 07:10:30 PM »
I just got a component cable for the Wii, but there is something about it which I wasn't aware of that presents a problem. Unlike the composite cable, the audio cables cannot be pulled apart from the video cables because they mold into one thick cable. Therefore, I cannot plug them into the receiver because they don't come close to reaching that far.

This leaves me with three undesirable options:
1. Move the receiver behind the television, making it out of reach.
2. Plug the audio cables into the television and use those poor quality speakers.
3. Forget the cable and go back to the composite cable.

What should I do? I just don't know...

62
I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but I can't think of anywhere else to go...

Is every single one of Nintendo's published Wii games still being produced and sold in stores? I've been looking for WarioWare: Smooth Moves for some time now and I haven't seen it anywhere. I don't recall ever finding Excite Truck either. Are the earlier releases no longer in production, or am I just not looking in the right places?

General Chat / Pop Tarts are a dessert
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:11:46 PM »
Pop Tarts used to be a somewhat-acceptable breakfast food, but almost every flavour available now seems to resemble a dessert and is overloaded with sugar. Even the few remaining fruit flavours now have frosting on them; the only non-frosting flavour left is strawberry. It's been pushed to a small space in the corner of the shelf and is often sold out, so I'm not the only one who misses the simplistic flavours of Pop-Tarts.

I don't know how Pop Tarts can still pass as a breakfast food; with all those empty calories they're a lot more in line with desserts. If I eat that much sugar, it's going to go straight to my butt. I'd have to do, like, 25 sit-ups just to work that off.

Just look at this listing of flavours from the back of the box:

Chocolate Chip
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Chocolate Fudge
Cookies 'n Creme
Hot Fudge Sunday
Strawberry Milkshake

It's like I'm naming flavours of ice cream.

I’m probably going to be ridiculed for this but oh well.

Games released on WiiWare should also at some point be released on disc and sold in retail stores. Yes, it’s true, the main reason I think this is because I don’t like to pay for digitally distributed media. Although I know I’m not the only one with that mindset, most people aren’t bothered by that. However, I remember hearing a statistic that only about half of all Wii owners have it connected to the Internet. I don’t know if that statistic was or still is true, but if it is, that’s 25 million Wii owners worldwide who don’t have access to WiiWare games.

They could work well if offered as compilations and sold at the same price as every game combined. If all of the Strong Bad game episodes were being sold on disc for $50, I might be interested in that. Hudson could also release all of their WiiWare titles onto a single disc. I know that many WiiWare games are by different developers, but does that mean they couldn’t be compiled onto one disc by a publisher? Since the games are being sold as a compilation, they aren’t really competing with one another.

There are certain games which could probably be released as stand-alone titles at budget prices, even if they cost a little more than the download. I would pay $15 for Dr. Mario Online if it were available on disc. If they released Mega Man 9 on disc (including all downloadable content) for $20, I’d be all over that.

This does cause some problems I’m sure, though I don’t know what those all might be. One would probably be shelf space, which is already kind of cluttered by all of the regular retail-only games. And so I ask the lot of you, what do you think? Would it be feasible to release certain WiiWare games on disc?

General Gaming / ♥ Loyalty ♥
« on: April 13, 2009, 03:03:51 AM »
Recently I have seen some people claim that games such as the “Wii” series (Sports, Play, Fit, Music) and things like the New Play Control! series aren’t Nintendo being loyal to their fans. This is something which doesn’t make sense to me, because I’m not really sure what that means.

The way I see it there's no such thing as any company being "loyal" to its consumers, people are just taking a business relationship too personally. Nintendo will release products that attract the most sales, regardless of what that is or who they target. They've never promised to always cater to the same people, so they have the right to release whatever they want. As a consumer, people have a choice too, and if a company no longer offers them a product they want then they can go find a different company who will.

I’m probably missing something here though. Can someone explain to me what it would mean for Nintendo to be “loyal”?

General Gaming / So nobody likes GameStop?
« on: March 21, 2009, 04:07:55 PM »
I was reading some of the negative comments about GameStop in the NWR 2006 thread (and also the story which sparked them), and whilst I can understand how one could be angered by such encounters, were they really so bad as to swear off the chain altogether?

First off, the employees will vary greatly by store location. Some stores do have employees who are actually knowledgeable about games and can help out the uninitiated without sarcasm or snide remarks. It's the ones who don't really know about games who can be a problem. One time I asked the clerk for a Nunchuk attachment for Wii, and she had no idea what I was talking about. I explained to her what it was, and she said "Oh, you mean a Nunchuk controller." Really? Couldn't make that connection? Anyways, if you don't have a GameStop near you with friendly employees, then I can understand never visiting them. However, unless you've actually visited each store in your area, I think it is a bit unfair to assume the entirety of the chain has terrible employees.

That said, some of their store policies are ridiculous. First off, I'm not really sure if they have any standards as to what condition they will accept a game in, as I've gotten a few disc games which were scratched to all dirty floors and couldn't be read at all. If these games were actually tested then they would have known they didn't work. Also, each used game has a set price regardless of condition, so games missing the box and/or manual aren't any cheaper.

Once I did a little experiment to test my suspicion that they put non-working game returns back on the shelf, by marking the game I had returned. Sure enough, when I went back a week later there it was sitting on the shelf. I guess they will continue to attempt to sell it until they sell it to somebody who wouldn't be bothered to return it.

The open-box display case thing for new games is pretty dusty table as well. I never buy new games from them any more because you never know if you'll get a sealed copy or not. The last "new" game I bought was Super Mario Sunshine, which was opened and already had a couple of scratches on the disc.

EB Games was better than GameStop. Even after the buyout, they still had better prices and store setup. That's where I bought many of my Nintendo 64 games from because their used games were all out on the shelves instead of locked behind a glass case, and were generally in good condition. I don't remember ever buying a non-working game from EB.

These days I only go to GameStop when I'm looking for GameCube games, as they're used prices on Wii games are barely less than new. Their GameCube prices are hit or miss, though they definitely have some better deals than whats on eBay. What really bothers me though is that they've started putting the price sticker underneath the plastic cover and on the paper insert itself, which is going to at least wrinkle up the paper when attempting to remove it. That's just plain illogical to put stickers there, it's like when they'd put stickers on cartridge game labels even though there's plenty of non-label space available.

When I started writing this topic I had the intention to be more positive, but I guess that didn't work out...

NWR Forums Discord / List of words changed by the Word Filter?
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:43:48 PM »
I had some trouble deciding where to put this topic. Although it it more of a "serious" question, I ultimately decided that the Funhouse was probably the best place for this because of what it could potentially turn into.

Is there a list out there of every word that is blocked by the Word Filter, as well as what it will become?

The reason I ask is that I have the Word Filter disabled, but I have noticed that more than just the usual "offensive" words are filtered out. For example, if you put an "M" and a "$" together, it will become "I am a terrible poaster". Since I won't know what my post will look like to those who use the Word Filter, I'd like to know what all of the blocked words are so I could avoid using them if I so choose.

Nintendo Gaming / Question about Wii messages
« on: February 26, 2009, 09:14:54 PM »
I'm wondering if one of you fine folks here can help answer this question.

If a message is sent to the Wii, but the standby connection is turned off, does the message just disappear?

I've seen some people state that when they have the standby connection turned off, they'll still receive any messages sent to the Wii the next time they power it on. This isn't the case for me. When I first got the Wii, I didn't use the standby connection. My friend asked why I never responded to any of her messages, but I never received any. I also don't receive official messages from Nintendo if the standby connection isn't on (or if the system is unplugged), such as the Mario Kart tournament messages.

Is this how it is supposed to work? Does anyone here have experience in this?
